Greetings!
I was first introduce to this quote several years ago when speaking with one of my Martial Art mentors. I was immediately fascinated by it's meaning. Upon further study I was able to find that this quote was first credited in writing in 1159 to Bernard of Chatres while being made famous by Sir Isaac Newton.
The basic underlying thought is that we are able to achieve greater heights by learning from those who have come before us. Wow! Why did I not hear of this sooner. When you stop and think about it this idea is not a hard one to understand and really seems like basic logic.
If that is indeed the case, then why do we not stop and pay respect more often to those around us who have helped us to achieve all that we have.
The answer to that question is an easy one..... We are selfish and basically self centered.
Look what I have accomplished
See how well I have done
Look at me- Look at me! It sounds a bit ridiculous doesn't it.
Who helped you along the way? Who supported you mentally, physically, emotionally and even spiritually. By getting away from the mirror and looking outside of ourselves we have an opportunity to give credit to those in our lives who have played a vital role in our success. It could be a Spouse, Parent Co-Worker or Mentor. How did they help you? What role did they play.
By looking for these influences we will inevitably begin to look for not only the person, but the action. By looking for the actions that they took to help us, we will begin to see the actions that we can take to help others to reach new heights in their lives. Now we truly have the understanding of this quote. I have become successful because I have had a great support team. Because of that I am obligated to do the same for those who will come after me.
