Greetings!
It never ceases to amaze me how much I learn when interacting with our 3 to 5 year old Tiger Cubs Class. As adults we have a host of great information and life lessons that we are all to happy to share with our own children or with others, but are we taking our own medicine. You can ask any one of our 50 Tiger Cubs, " How Do We Learn?", and they will answer " Open our ears and close our mouths, Sir!"
Wow- What a great idea for us as Adults Double L T-N-A is basically an Adult Version of this same concept. Listen - Learn - Take Notes - Act On Those Notes.
This seems like a pretty basic concept and we are all doing parts of this process each day, but the main hurdle is that if any one of these steps are missing then the entire concept falls apart.
Listen- Hearing and Listening are two different things, Any of you who have kids know exactly what I am talking about. Just because you heard it does not mean that you were internalizing what was being discussed. To listen, you have to tune out the rest of the world and dedicate yourself wholly to the topic at hand.
Learn- Learning is a bi-product of proper Listening. However it also requires practice. I am regularly presented situations where I am teaching either a student or employee a process only to have them tell me, "Oh yeah I learned that last week." Well actually you didn't. Having been taught something and having learned it are two different things. If you are able to reproduce the material independently, then you have learned it. If you are not able to do so, then you have been taught the material, but have not learned it yet. Remedy? More practice on the area in question.
Take Notes- Having trained hundreds of people in my previous careers and thousands in the Martial Arts, I always find it funny when I am teaching someone a new system or procedure and ask them to take some notes. The typical answer is, " Oh, it's OK. I'm really more of a visual learner. I just need to do it a couple of times." To which my answer is always, " Um.. No... You need to write this down!"
Act- For most people this one is the toughest. The easiest way to solve this problem is to follow a simple process GOYA. I borrow this from a former mentor, and I love it! GOYA is based on the simple principle of taking action - Right Now! You have to take action for any of your learning to take effect. Whether it is in the area of personal fitness, the Martial Arts, or in your professional career, GOYA can help. By the way, to break this process down for you a little bit, G- Get O- Off Y- Your A- I'll let you fill this one in.
