Greetings!
Some say that "Practice Makes Perfect". As nice as that sounds it isn't really all that accurate. "Perfect" is unattainable, but that should not deter us from the goal.
In reality, "Practice Makes Progress". Constant practice creates constant progress. At Kuk Sool Pasadena we have always taught that we ask for "Progress not Perfection". That is the truly great quality of the Martial Arts. Any one can do it. Our current student base ranges from 3 to 63 years of age, and our most senior student to achieve Black Belt was 72!
The truly honorable and achievable goal in life is to "Chase Perfection" with a proper understanding that you will never get there.
Chase Perfection - Catch Excellence
If you were to study any Fortune 500 Executive, you would find that they have never been satisfied with mediocrity. To perform at an "Acceptable" level is not enough for them.
I can tell you that in my many years in the professional world I was never satisfied. Now that is not to say that I was not happy. I enjoyed my career, but refused to be limited to any one position or skill set. This still holds true today. I attempt on a daily, weekly and monthly basis to improve myself and those around me. Reading books, watching instructional or motivational videos, listening to audio books while I work out. These are all ways that I am trying to improve on myself when I am not on the mat or at my desk.
Here are a couple of questions that I like to ask myself:
What am I passionate about, and what am I doing to improve my self in that area of my life.
What am I good at, and how am I working to get better. (This is a separate area. Just because I am good at something does not mean I am passionate about it, and just because I am passionate about it does not mean I am good at it)
What "Important" area of my life do I need the most work in. To be blunt, what area am I currently avoiding because I suck at it.
We have all been told that life is not a sprint, but a marathon. So where are you running to?
Chase Perfection - Catch Excellence
Respectfully,
