 back Greetings!
"A Leader who has no followers, is just taking a walk" Source - Unknown
That quote makes me laugh every time that I think of it, but if you really look at what it is saying, it really is a very important lesson.
Leadership by example- Most people would sum this up by simply stating "Walk the Talk!"
Although this would get most of the thought across, I personally don't think that it captures the full intent of the statement.
We have all seen an actor perform on stage, and most of us are familiar with the concept of over acting. At least in the sense that an actor must make much larger movements on stage in order to make the idea that he is trying to get across visible to the audience in a very large auditorium.
The same holds true for Teachers, Managers, Executives, etc. If we "Walk The Talk", and do exactly what we are asking of others, then we are setting a great example, right?
NO -
We must hold ourselves to a higher standard. Some of our thoughts and actions will be diminished by our audience. This could happen for many different reasons. Maybe some of the people that you lead are getting the information second hand, or maybe you are in a difficult position that does not naturally garnish a warm reception. In any case, if you are going to lead-
LEAD BY EXAMPLE WITH THE ENERGY FOR EXCELLENCE!
Those managers that can hold themselves to this difficult, but very rewarding motto, will find that even after their example has been diminished by the occasional neigh sayer, it will be above reproach by the majority of their followers.
Here are a couple of ideas on how you can lead with the "Energy For Excellence"
1- If you ask your employees to some in early for a big project - Get to work before them and be at your desk ready to go when they come in.
2- Once in a while take the "BAD" shift and send your employee home to see their family.
3- REWARD EXCELLENCE - People love recognition more than money!!!
This last one should be the easiest, but is the one that most people are lacking.....
SMILE- A LOT - Just be in a good mood. Be happy. You live in a great country. You have a job. Your a leader. So enjoy it!
