Greetings!

When I was a kid growing up in the Panhandle of Texas,my Grandpa had a barn with several horses. I remember getting up early in the morning to go down to feed the horses and fill their water troughs. I especially remember using the ground fed water pumps that fed water to the troughs. They had a large handle on them that you had to open to allow the water to flow. Only a few years before they had a similar type valve, but it had an even larger handle that you had to pump up and down to get the water into the line. What a lot of work just for some water!

As a child I didn't really stop to think about the physics of the pump and why one required so much more work than the other. The pump that I used was already full of water. The pressure of the valve kept the line full and ready to go at all times, while the older pump had to work the water into the line every time it needed to be used.

Life really isn't so much different. If I choose to stay in top physical shape at all times while always striving for more, then I will be ready for any situation that life throws at me. I may not always win, but I will at least always be ready to give my very best. On the other hand, if I become complacent and allow myself to slip in one or more areas of my life, then I can never really be sure of the outcome of the challenges that life will be bringing my way.

This analogy holds true in regards to my training, my education, my marriage, my nutrition, etc.

We need to ask ourselves on a regular basis, "What am I priming my pump with?"  If you are putting in hard work of your highest caliber, then that is most likely what you will get out of life. On the other hand, if you are priming your pump with half hearted promises and no real effort, then the material coming out of your pump is more likely to look like sewage than crisp clean water.

I'm not big on New Years Resolutions, but I will admit that January 1st  always  seems like a good time to look at where I am going and what type of material I am priming my pump with.

What's in your pump?

Respectfully,

Pu Sa Bum Nym Jason
