2012 Kohala '

Āina Festival

On November 18th, Hawai'i Institute of Pacific Agriculture hosted the 2012 Kohala 'Āina Festival at 'Iole. Attendees enjoyed demonstration booths, fresh cane juice, & a feast of Kohala-grown foods.

Traditional-Style Hale
Led by local hale-building expert Walter Wong, 'Iole volunteers experienced the value of laulima (working together), as they constructed a traditional style hale wa'a (canoe house) during a series of community workshops. The structure was blessed during a ceremony on November 24th.

Be sure to visit the hale during your next trip to 'Iole & check out 'Iole's Facebook Photos in the meantime. If you attended hale workshops, please share your photos, & let us know if you have not yet received your Certificate of Participation.
LoiPre-Contact Lo'i Restoration

On December 19th, 'Iole supporters gathered to celebrate restored lo'i kalo (taro patches) just below the Old Kohala Girls School. A group of Kohala volunteers known as 'Ōhua O Nā Kia'i No Nā Keiki O Ka 'Āina (The Protectors For The Children Of The Land) successfully removed invasive African Tulip trees, grasses, and vines covering a terraced pre-contact agricultural site &, within a few short months of intensive work, revived kalo-growing at 'Iole.

Kahu Tom Fernandez & Kahu Chris Trump of Kalahikiola Church gave a special blessing to the area, & contributed 40 kalo plants to the group, who shared amazing stories of the lessons & legends they learned while working on the land & reviving this part of Kohala's heritage.

The 3 restored lo'i, which will be filled with a variety of kalo, are flanked by rock clusters where Ōhua O Kia'i No Nā Keiki O Ka Āina has planted Kohala's other traditional staple crop: 'uala (sweet potato).

BIEA A Warm Welcome to Big Island Eco Adventures

We are pleased to announce new neighbors at the 'Iole office. Big Island Eco Adventures II has begun operating its zipline check-in from the Bond Homestead area. Zipline guests are now learning more about 'Iole than ever, as they begin & end tours of the adjacent gulch right here in the Historic Bond District.

Inspiring zipline guests to take away a vivid understanding of Kohala's unique natural & cultural history, renowned artist John D. Dawson completed a series of 21 panels currently being installed along BIEA's zipline course. An illustrator for over 50 years & a Big Island resident since 1989, John has worked for publications ranging from National Geographic to Ranger Rick and for institutions ranging from New York's Museum of Natural History to Volcano Visitor Center.  His memorable 12 year series of Nature of America post office stamps depicts ecosystems across the US, including 24 native species of the Hawaiian Rainforest. John is also the artist of the US Post Office's recent Bonsai Forever stamps. We are thrilled to display the first panel of the series, which depicts ancient lo'i & the native 'Io (Hawaiian Hawk), adjacent to the 'Iole office for all to enjoy!

With gratitude to all who help care for the land & historical treasures of the Kohala community,
Kerry Balaam
'Iole Education Coordinator
