 Aloha,

It was a summer of restoration and new beginnings at 'Iole!

July 25th's Volunteer Day was both good fun and inspiring work, as we continued improving the Historic District trail. Volunteers enjoyed seeing progress made along the trail by another group of local restoration volunteers, who have been working to remove invasive species from pre-contact lo'i near the Kohala Girls School.

The lo'i restoration crew and many of our regular trail volunteers were joined by eager students from around the island to participate in the construction of a traditional style hale wa'a (canoe house), under the guidance of hale-building expert Kumu Walter Wong. Bring your whole ohana to the next 3 hale workshops ! Lunch will be provided!

Also mark your calendars for the next 2 Family Night talk story presentations at North Kohala Public Library and join resident teacher Gavin Harrison the first Saturday of each month for his ongoing series of "Walking in the Wild" silent meditation hikes

As always, check our Events page for a complete list of what's happening at 'Iole. Of course, the biggest upcoming event will take place October 6, when we hope to see you all at the Kohala Country Fair.

While you're at the Fair, be sure to envision the next phase of community education at 'Iole: Kohala Equine Education Center will soon make its home in the fairgrounds area makai of Akoni Pule Highway.

LoiPre-Contact Lo'i Restoration

Since July, 'Ōhua O Kia'i No Nā Keiki O Ka Āina (The Protectors For The Children Of The Land), a group of Kohala residents, has been showing up at 'Iole to give their time and energy to a very special area near the Kohala Girls' School.

Lo'i Restoration

These volunteers have worked together to remove invasive African Tulip trees, grasses, and vines that had overgrown lo'i kalo (taro patches). These lo'i have layers of history: they were established long before western contact and were also tended by the students of the Old Girls' School.

HaleHale Wa'a Building Workshops
Aunty MaryAnn
Our first 3 hale workshops, led by local hale-building expert Walter Wong, have been a joy to host! Workshop participants have shown true laulima (working together), constructing a traditional style hale wa'a (canoe house) & honing skills such as lashing and pohaku dry stacking.
Bring your whole ohana to our next 3 workshops, 8:00am-2:30pm:
October 13, October 27, & November 10
Lunch will be provided!

LibraryTalkEvening Library Talks
Upcoming dates in 'Iole's series of Family Night talk story presentations at the beautiful North Kohala Public Library include natural history artist John D. Dawson Monday, October 29th, at 6:30pm and native wildlife expert Linda Elliott Monday, November 5th, at 6:30pm.

Native 'ōpe'ape'a were featured in August, as USGS Hawaiian Hoary Bat Project researchers entertained young and old bat-lovers alike. In September, Dr. Richard Stevens discussed the significance of Hawai'i's ancient trails and their layers of history. Dr. Stevens also treated trail-enthusiasts to a hike around 'Iole's Historic District, echoing themes of his library presentation.

Dr. Stevens Dr. Stevens' Hike

Led by a Big Island member of the 'Iole ohana, each talk in this series focuses on a different topic connected to Kohala's natural and human history. For more information, contact the Library at 889-6655. Our thanks to Librarian Janet Lam for making these presentations possible!
