March 22 Coastal Birds Lecture
With witty, anecdotal style, John Yow journeys to the fringes and shares his encounters with some of the most familiar and beloved coastal birds in The Armchair Birder Goes Coastal: The Secret Lives of the Birds of the Southeastern Shore. He will present a special birding program based on his book in the Education Center on Friday, March 22, at 10 a.m. and again at 1 p.m. Shell Point Retirement Community sponsors the lecture, along with the DDWS.

Meet 'Teddy Roosevelt'  tomorrow

     Teddy Roosevelt reprisor Joe Wiegand is back to regale Refuge guests with his humor and deep knowledge of the president. He will be on hand in the Refuge Education Center starting at 10 a.m. on Thursday, March 14, to celebrate the 110th anniversary of the National Wildlife Refuge System. You are invited to meet and greet Teddy while enjoying cookies to celebrate the occasion.

 

Campaign reaches $1.2 million!
DDWS President John McCabe accepts a check from Everlyn Rose and Jonathan Silverman
   Evelyn Rose and Jonathan Silverman of Sanibel Island recently pledged a donation of $15,000 over  three years to the "Ding" Darling Preservation Campaign, bringing the total pledged to the $1.2 million mark, just shy of the $1.8 million goal by $600,000.

   Funds from the campaign will purchase the environmentally sensitive land of Woodring Point at READ MORE

 Our new Education Center and Administration Office doors are not only more attractive and inviting, they prevent birds from flying into the windows. Cleverly they disguise the windows for birds while allowing humans on the inside to see out of them.
