Photo Contest Deadline

 'Ding' Days photo contest deadline Sept. 15th

 

Ken Jager of Sanibel Island took second place in the 2011 "Ding" Darling photo contest for his "Double-crested Cormorant with Mangrove Water Snake."

Sept 15, 2012, marks the deadline for the 25th Annual "Ding" Darling Days   Amateur Nature Photography Contest. The contest, sponsored by the "Ding" Darling Wildlife Society, is held  in conjunction with "Ding" Darling Days, Oct. 14-20, 2012. Complete contest rules READ MORE

 

Sea Turtle Grant Update
Thanks to a $18,350 grant from the Sea Turtle Grants Program which is funded from proceeds of the Florida Sea Turtle License Plate Program, the "Ding" Darling Wildlife society and the   

 

  Refuge are able to publish brochures and other materials to educate the public about responsible beach etiquette to boost the survival rate of sea turtle hatchlings. The following is one of two videos that will be used attaching theQR code for smart phone users.

The Loss of a Refuge Friend  - Joyce Mutz

Joyce Chenoweth Mutz passed away August 31, 2012 following a short illness.  Joyce was born in North Vernon, Indiana on July 27, 1923 and later moved to Springfield, IL where she graduated from Springfield High School. She attended Lenoir-Rhyne University in Hickory NC.  She married Thomas R. Mutz in 1945, who was the light and love of her life.  Joyce was married to Tom for 47 years until he died in 1992. Joyce was an unusually energetic woman.

She was an active participant in sport and community organizations.  Joyce performed archaeological field and lab work for the Randell Research Center on Pine Island, Florida and was an enthusiastic and dedicated volunteer at the "Ding" Darling Wildlife Refuge.   She sky dived on her 70th birthday and went deep sea scuba diving in Bali, Indonesia in 2011.  She had other dives in Bonaire, BVI, Little Cayman Island, the Red Sea in Egypt, Fiji, and Palau.  Joyce was booked on a flight and planning a dive in mid-September in Borneo, Indonesia, and was planning a dive for when she turned 90 years old in Malaysia/Sipidan.  She was a certified scuba diver and a recognized underwater photographer. She was a member of the Reef Society. She served as the President of the North Shore Lassies at the North Shore Country Club, was on the Board of the ICA Curling Association.  Joyce was the Skip on the Illinois curling team that competed in the inaugural Olympic Curling Qualifying event in St Paul MN in 1988.  She was a certified World Curling Official and officiated at many national and International curling competitions.  Survivors include a daughter, Sondra M. Talley (husband Dr. Richard W.) of Littleton, Colo and two sons, Gregory T. Mutz of Chicago, Il (wife Laura H.) and Frank M. Mutz II of Atlanta, GA (wife Carol K.), 8 grandchildren, 6 step-grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.  In lieu of flowers, contributions are requested to be sent to the "Ding" Darling Wildlife Society, PO Box 565, Sanibel, FL 33957.  Or call 239.472.1100 ext. 4.

'Ding' Student Scholarships

"Ding" Darling Wildlife Society is committed to training today's youth as conservation stewards of the future. To that end, the Society works with various local businesses and individuals to
