Primex eNews        Delivering information to improve your results!

It is the goal of Primex Plastics to use our eNews to educate and inform our customers. This is the third eNews focusing on different aspects of risk reduction in color selection for thermoformed parts. We believe this information will be of value to all Primex customers. In part one we focused on the importance of communication, and part two was about establishing a common color standard.

Understanding the limitations of color measurement

Color inspection equipment manufacturers strive to design equipment that mimics what the human eye is capable of doing. The most effective tool to date is the color spectrophotometers. They work by bouncing light off of a sample and then measuring the change in the light that is being returned. Based on the absorption, reflection, and refraction it assigns numbers to define the color. Typically, these values are expressed in terms of "LAB", where 'L' references the Lightness to Darkness range, 'A' the Green to Red range, and 'B' the Blue to yellow range. Any characteristic of the sample that will affect the absorption, reflection, or refraction will be cause for poor readings. Gloss, texture, opacity, along with effects such as pearlescence, fluorescence, translucence/tints, and metallic can all influence and impact accuracy.

Proper instrument set up on a spectrophotometer is very important. Factors such as the color space being used, aperture view size, observation angle, specular components, and UV filters will all influence the values obtained. This is also where the light source comes in. Most color spectrophotometers are set for the Daylight D65 or C scale. Some colors such as yellow are very susceptible to the light source and may give different results. If one person views it in daylight while a different person views it in fluorescent lighting, a failure can occur. All parties involved should all agree on the instrument settings to be used.

To achieve the best color selection for your specific application, consult your local Inside Sales representative or Territory Manager. They are supported on technical issues by our New Product Development Center (NPDC). Our customers value their expert, confidential insight and appreciate the value-added service.
