Primex eNews        Delivering information to improve your results!

It is the goal of Primex to use our eNews to educate and inform our customers. The next three eNews will focus on different aspects of risk reduction in the color match process. We believe this information will be of value to all Primex customers. In part one we focus on the importance of communication, followed by part two on determining a common color standard, and part three about understanding the limitations of color measurement.

Color Communication

Since most thermoformers do not extrude the sheet that is used, they may be unaware of issues that have a direct bearing on selection and success in colorants. Better knowledge of color matching can go a long way in achieving improved results from the color match stage to the final product. The more information that can be obtained, the better the accuracy in presenting a cost effective and correctly performing product.

Color selection issues, costs, and lead times can all be reduced by improving the exchange of information that occurs between the color house and the decision makers. Most color failures are the result of insufficient communication prior to the start of the color process.

The minimum information supplied should include:

  • What is the end product and use?
  • What is the exact resin to be used in the match? (All layers such as cap and substrate)
  • Requirements such as FDA, CONEG, NSF, Light Fastness and/or Weather fastness.
  • Expected life-time or service-life in the end application.
  • Sheet gauge before and after forming. (Depth of Draw)
  • What is the light source used to view the final color match?
  • Is this a visual match or will an instrument such as a spectrophotometer be used?
  • What is the target to be matched?

To achieve the best color selection for your specific application, consult your local Inside Sales representative or Territory Manager. They are supported on technical issues by our New Product Development Center (NPDC). Our customers value their expert, confidential insight and appreciate the value-added service. Primex Plastics is here to assist you each step of the way.
