My Little Corner of the World
We are entering an exciting church year together! There are more opportunities to grow, to learn, to care for one another - and I personally invite each of you to find your "spot." We continue with our themes, but we are adding another layer to help us concentrate on a larger need. From September to December we focus on a Season of Caring.  (More on themes and Seasons can be found in this Domelight.)

Why a Season of Caring? A community that understands and engages in caring for one another understands the many reasons people seek connections. It responds by creating meaningful ways for people to be together and is clear about its mission and calling in the world. It creates space for conversations around the "ultimacy and intimacy" of life, and is proactive in building systems that invite healthy conversations.

A community that understands the many facets of caring understands that none of us is without questions, doubts and fears. A community dedicated to growing in health and numbers understands the underlying imperative called connection.

How are you invited to help this Season of Caring be dynamic and successful? Here are a few focus items.

Creating a more dynamic, organized Care Ministry.
Offering Lay Pastoral Care Training in October.
Training Small Group Guides and growing Small Group Ministry.
Inviting visitors to learn more about who we are and how they can be more connected.

Each person is part of the above goals. The work is never done. Each of you is an integral part of making this coming church year the best we possibly can. If you are interested in any of these ideas and want to find out more, be in touch. Be present. Be ready to care just a little bit more!

Peace y'all,
Rev. P.
Kim McDonald BOT President
Desk of the President . . . and the beat goes on . . .
Community and right relationships are an integral part of life here at UUCT.  Last month I spoke on how service heightens our sense of community.  This month I want to touch on the topic of covenant and what it does for our communal experience.  I think as a group we do very well with following our covenant, and that is a large part of why we function so well together and have such a good sense of community.

Our covenant explains how we are to act toward each other.  We are to treat each other with kindness, and support and care for each other.  We are to welcome others with hospitality, both those who are similar to us and those who might be different in some way. We are to do this as we work and play together to make this a joyful community. Threats, finger pointing, blaming are not part of right relationships here at UUCT.  Poor communication leads to hurt, anger, resentment and division, all toxic to a loving community.

One thing not included in our church covenant, but which I have seen on some committee covenants, is to go directly to someone with whom we have a problem or issue, rather than talking about the issue with someone else.  When we use calm, nonthreatening attitudes and conversations to discuss differences, we can solve issues, or at least "agree to disagree." And having the honesty to discuss a problem can actually deepen your understanding and relationship with another person.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if we had extended family and community covenants outside our UUCT sphere?  I encourage you to take our covenant with you wherever you go.  Make our world just a little more like the wonderful community we have here.

Peace to you all,
Kim
Board Thank You's!
This month, the Board would like to recognize and show appreciation for the efforts of Diana Stevens and Fran Davin, belatedly, for their organizing of, decorating for, and carrying on of the Sweethearts Dance a few months back.  The reports were GLOWING, and the efforts much enjoyed!  Thank you both for going above and beyond.

Why Lay Pastoral Care Training?
What if you were going through a difficult time and wanted to sit down
with someone from your congregation to share your concerns? Who would
you go to for this type of caring presence who has the time to meet with
you, would preserve confidentiality and has training and supervision
from their minister?  -- a Lay Pastoral Care Associate.

A little about Carol Wayne and Linda Erikson, our trainers on October
7 (Friday, 6pm - 9pm) and 8 (Saturday, 9am - 3pm) at UUCT:

Their program began in April 2003 with a training given by the UU Church
of Fairfax, Virginia which Carol attended. Carol and Linda have received
additional training at monthly meetings, the minister's class, General Assembly, Virginia Commonwealth University, Alzheimer's Association, and the Bereavement Coalition.

Carol became chairman of the program in 2007 and in 2007, 2009, 2011, and 2013. Carol led UU trainings Carol in five congregations in Knoxville, Tennessee, six congregations in Williamsburg, Virginia area, a workshop at General Assembly 2009 and 2011, and  several congregations in the Golden, Colorado area. Linda Ericson joined the program in 2011 and has become the co-chair. They co-chaired the training for the Unitarian Church of Norfolk in 2015. Linda led the training for Williamsburg Unitarian Universalists in 2016.

As a result of their work, 20 Lay Pastoral Care Associates gave over 380 hours of
service in the past year to offer compassion and a listening ear to our
beloved church community. We are committed to sharing what we have
learned so far.

Interested in learning more? Please contact Rev. P. OR attend a Care
Ministry gathering on August 30, 6:30PM, Education building.

UUCT mUUsic Group
Meets 7:30pm Mondays in the Small Dome

In the spirit of old-time hootenannys and good-time jam sessions, this is an informal gathering of musicians, vocalists, and just plain music lovers who want to make or listen to mUUsic. Sing, play an instrument, drum, or bang on an upside-down waste basket. Get creative. It's all good.

Everyone is welcome, regardless of ability or experience. So come one, come all, and let the good times roll!  Questions:  muusic@uutampa.org
 Small Group Ministry Corner
As we head into September we are excited to begin to grow opportunities to take part in Small Group Ministry. Formerly Chalice Circles, Small Group Ministry is the primary way to establish close connections with others, share reflections and thoughts on our monthly themes and continue to grow as a UU.

Facilitators, or guides, will be training on September 6t, 13t and 20t. If you're interested in facilitating this training is the way to learn more, meet others and help get Small Groups off to a successful start! Sign ups for groups will start later in September, so watch for your chance to be involved!

Everyone needs to give Mary Lou Jones a hearty thank you when you see her! Mary Lou has been an advocate of small groups and has done much work to ensure their success! We appreciate her dedication and efforts.

If you're interested in facilitating, please be in touch with Rev. P. at revp@uutampa.org.
If You Use Amazon...

Ple
ase do this quick thing to help maximize our donations from Amazon --

I would never tell you where to shop. If you don't shop on Amazon and don't want to, then by all means stop reading right now. But if you are going to shop on Amazon anyway, please continue.

Still with me? Good. Okay, hopefully by now you've gotten into the habit of entering the Amazon website by going to our church website, www.uutampa.org, and then clicking on the Amazon button at the bottom.  Amazon donates a percentage of your purchase price to UUCT when you enter the site that way.

If you've done that lately, you've noticed that it now redirects you to Amazon Smile, and asks you to designate a charity to receive a donation.  Search for "Unitarian Universalist Church of Tampa" as your designated charity, which is something that you only have to do once. This will maximize the amount that Amazon donates to us.  Amazon Smile will only ever ask you to designate a charity once, and then you never have to think about it again.

Please continue to enter Amazon through the church website, too.  We're not relying on the Amazon money to keep the lights on or anything, but it adds up and every bit helps.

If you have any trouble setting it up, email me and I'll be happy to help you. jshaw@butler.legal

Special thanks to Pat Benedict and Jay Hall for their assistance with all the paperwork and computering, respectively, that went into getting up set up with Amazon Smile.
Buildings and Grounds (B&G) Day Report for August
Turn out for the past Buildings and Grounds Day (Saturday, August 13, 2016) produced an enthusiastic lot of volunteers.  Kathy Reddy (our coffee hour maven) worked inside organizing, arranging and sprucing up the little Dome for our Sunday coffee hour.  David Reddy worked outside removing small trees that were encroaching on our parking lots and trimming our planting beds.  Rodolfo, always present to help, pressure washed our handicapped parking area near the sanctuary.  Many, many thanks to these three who give up their time on a hot, steamy August day to help maintain our property.
A special thanks, too, to those of you who continue to contribute money on Sundays to help out our main grounds volunteer, Rodolfo.  As you may know, Rodolfo volunteers many hours of his time throughout the week (not just B&G Day) working on our grounds on a volunteer basis.  Your continued support of his work through your donations are greatly appreciated.

HOPE Updates
Hillsborough Organization for Progress and Equality (HOPE)
By Robert Boileau, UUCT HOPE Team Leader
Updates on HOPE's two current Action Issues:

Regarding civil citations for children instead of an arrest for first-time misdemeanor marijuana possession (which includes counseling and related requirements of those diverted to this program) -- SUCCESS, finally! Hillsborough County Sheriff Gee has finally agreed, along with city police departments, etc., to implement a countywide pilot of this Florida state-provided option. (Please see the Memorandum Of Understanding on our UUCT email list 8/17/2016)

Affordable Housing Trust Fund - At the August  Board of County Commissioners Workshop, with four members of HOPE in attendance, Hillsborough Affordable Housing Services presented the Consolidated Plan for HUD federal funding.  This plan affirms HOPE's position on the severe housing crisis in our county.  Four HOPE members also met with County Commissioner Crist and set a September 12 follow-up meeting.

I attended the July and August HOPE Board of Directors meetings as our lone UUCT representative (we can have one more!). Along with 21 other HOPE members, I attended the inspiring and informative national DART Justice Ministry Conference 7/12/16 in the St. Petersburg.

I made a calculation error last month when reporting the amount that our 2016 UUCT HOPE Individual Investment Drive had received (erroneously $4,050.00); to date the amount is $3,925.00 from 19 contributions, with another $210.00 pledged, so we are still getting close to our $5,000 goal for this year.  PLEASE contact me or another member of our Justice Ministry Network if you can contribute and have not done so.

HOPE has met with 40  business executives and received $44,000 towards our corporate goal of $62,300.  We still need more support people to accompany our HOPE spokesperson and organizer to these meetings.  Please contact me or the HOPE office if you can help.

HOPE dates to remember:
UUCT Justice Ministry Team Meeting - Date still to be determined, but by September 11.
Listening Process Kick-Off with training is Monday, September 12, 2016 at 6:30 pm.

For more information:  HOPE@HillsboroughHOPE.org;  Sharon Streater, Sharon@HillsboroughHOPE.org; or Jesid Acosta, Jesid@HillsboroughHOPE.org. or me, Robert Boileau, UUCT-HOPE team leader.

Our theme for this event is Moon Energy: Rhythm, Mystery, Illumination.  During this event, we will explore the six phases of the moon and how the moon's influence has an impact on us, in both overt and subtle ways.  We will also experience moon rituals and share ideas on how you can work with the moon's energy to enhance your connection to the Divine Feminine.
