My Little Corner of the World
How I love thee? This popped into my head as I pondered the Domelight this month. I must admit, during my recent absence - going home to care for my mother during her illness - I had a chance to reflect on the time we have spent together as congregation and minister. We're just getting started! But that week away that I had not planned taught me something really valuable. I love this congregation, and Tampa. I love you and all the possibilities that lay ahead.

Love comes in many forms. Each of you knows this. My question for us this month is whether or not we spend enough time reflecting on the love we have in our lives. Do we spend enough time being thankful for that love? Do we find ways to embody love that stretches us, challenges us and holds us to a higher standard for tomorrow than we set for today?

Too often we become disillusioned in a world that teaches us to be suspicious and anything but loving. Are we as a people of faith ready to stand as say, "We are the people who will love the hell out of the world?" In that moment we are beginning our journey of looking outward together into the world that so desperately needs our message.

I had the privilege of marching in the MLK parade with 18 other members of UUCT today. We waved and said hello. We danced - a little. People looked at our Standing on the Side of Love banner and t-shirts, and said, "Thank you! We need love! Love is the answer!"

I couldn't agree more. Love is the answer.

Peace y'all,
Rev. Patricia

Desk of the President . . . and the beat goes on . . .
Ah, February, the month of love.  Cupids, hearts, and chocolate come to mind.  We think of romantic love on Valentine's Day, but at UUCT, this is the time of year when our minds turn to another type of love, the love that some individuals display through their dedication and commitment to our beloved church community.  It is the time of year when we start contemplating which of our fellow UUCT members has given so much of her or himself that they are deserving of the Betty Lee Service Award.

Betty Lee was an early member of UUCT, and she was known for her service to our church.  She gave so much of her time, treasure, and talent to help this community grow, that even before she left the Tampa area to be near family as her health declined, an annual award was dedicated in her honor.  Every year since 1982 (except for 9 years when the award fell by the wayside from 1996 through 2004), a person from our congregation is honored for their service, their dedicated love for UUCT that singles them out as deserving of special recognition.

The Betty Lee Service Award is not given for a one-time act of great service.  This award is for someone who demonstrates their caring to UUCT by ongoing service, year after year, project after project, committee after committee. These are the individuals who have discovered how enriching it can be to give of themselves in the service of others, and who have felt the love of community and the joy of becoming an integral part of something greater than themselves.

Within this issue of "The Domelight," you will find instructions on how to submit your nomination of someone you believe measures up to this standard of service.  The Board will review all the nominations and the winner of the award will be announced at the Congregational meeting in May.  It is our way of saying "THANK YOU!" to a very important person who epitomizes the loving and caring that are part of the UU tradition.

The Coffee Hour Hospitality Team is a great way to meet people and learn about the church. It's a small but important job that helps us to make people feel welcome. The team is in charge of setting up coffee and refreshments for people to enjoy after the Sunday morning service. We also take care of anything needed during the social time. Clean-up is another responsibility. No cooking knowledge or experience is needed. No heavy lifting required.

We're organizing now, but our idea is to have 2 people come in at 10:15 to make the coffee and set up the food. This is done before 11:00 so no one will miss the service. The set-up people also would put out cream and refrigerated food at 12:00 and make sure nothing is needed during the coffee hour. Then 2 different people would begin the clean-up at about 12:30. This takes about 45 minutes. Our vision is for each group of 4 to work one Sunday a month. Maybe you're in the choir and can't do set-up; that's okay. You can be on a clean-up team. Or maybe you have a commitment right after the service; that's okay, too. You can do set-up. Of course, there will be training for everyone.

If we can get 20 people to do a little, nobody will have to do a lot. Want to help (or learn more)? See Kathy Reddy at church or contact her at 813-875-2098 or at kreddy_2001@yahoo.com.

Membership
A warm welcome to our eleven new members: Christina Arnold, Jay Butler, Morgan Burgess, Ryan Callahan, Rachael Ebner, Tracy Holley, Lisa Maddocks-Baisley, Patricia Owen, Ron Phillips, Ken Suarez and Jackie Valenzuela. There will be short paragraphs of introduction in the next Domelight.

A HUGE thank you to all our membership volunteers who serve on our membership committee, greet, usher, coordinate, create visitor gift bags, provide name tags and do other things that make our worship so wonderful. I'm not going to list them because they are too numerous and I don't want to leave anyone off the list.

A greeting to Chris Arnold and Kim Robe who are joining the Membership Committee. Others are welcome to join as well. We meet on the first Tuesday each month at 7 pm. Email me at membership@uutampa.org so that I can send you an agenda for our January 5th meeting.

HOPE Updates
Hillsborough Organization for Progress and Equality
By Robert Boileau

Thanks to all of you who support our church's efforts to achieve justice through and with HOPE!  As of August 3, 2015, our church members had Invested a total of $2,675.00 in HOPE from seventeen individual or family UUCT Investors.  I know we had subsequent Investments, of at least $50.00, and I believe more; unfortunately, I do not have those amounts as of this writing.

To briefly recap some of the major HOPE efforts for the last quarter of 2015, and so far in 2016:

HOPE 2015 Annual Convention, Monday, October 26th:  UUCT had twelve members and/or friends attend this major event, along with Reverend Patricia Owen, who provided the opening prayer, which was very well received by all. The overflow HOPE crowd at Saint Peter Claver Catholic Church was very enthusiastic.

Of the six invited guests/office-holders, five attended and provided positive feedback on our two issues for this year.  Attending were the Honorable Ronald Ficarrotta, Chief Judge, the Hon. Julianne Holt, Public Defender, and the Hon. Pat Frank, Clerk of the Court, all of Circuit Court 13 (Hillsborough County), as well as the Hon. Ed Narain, District 61, and the Hon. Darryl Rouson, District 70, both members of the Florida House of Representatives.

HOPE has two current issues: establishing an Affordable Housing Trust Fund for Hillsborough County; and Civil Citations for Misdemeanor, meaning a citation instead of arrest for first possession of marijuana, which would provide faster diversion into drug education and treatment programs, as well as avoid the traumatizing affects of an arrest on a child and the very negative long term effects on the child's future .  We have made progress on both of these issues, but much remains to be done for both.

The subsequent HOPE Research to Action Training and Kick-off event was well attended by most of HOPE's member congregations.  This event provided more in-depth information regarding both of our current issues noted above, and was divided into two simultaneous sessions.  I attended the Civil Citations session and have been involved with work on this effort since, having attended three Hillsborough County Juvenile Justice Board Circuit 13 monthly meetings since, in November, December and January, and one HOPE Civil Citation Team meeting.

As UUCT's lone representative on the HOPE Board of Directors since October, I attended all three BOD Meetings, plus the HOPE Board Retreat, held Jan. 8 and 9, Friday evening and half of Saturday at the Tampa Franciscan Center.  This was excellent opportunity for those of us on the HOPE BOD to become better acquainted with each other and to continue to build on our work with HOPE.  By the way, we can have a second UUCT representative on this BOD, which I enthusiastically encourage.

Those of you who had committed to be a justice ministry network member during our UUCT-HOPE House Meetings/Listening process this past fall are encouraged to contact me at your earliest convenience, if we have not already communicated recently.  We need to set dates and times for our UUCT HOPE Team and Justice Ministry Network, this month and next, respectively.  Thank you in advance!

I will try to keep UUCT better informed of HOPE's efforts and progress going forward.

Remembering
James Mackie Caldwell passed away on January 18th 2016. You will remember Jim as the architect of the Witches Masquerade village and he also designed and constructed the steps on each side of the stage in our sanctuary. Jim was quiet and often went unnoticed but will be remembered as a skilled, talented, good, and honorable man.  Jim is also the father of Catherine Caldwell who works in our nursery.  Arrangements for the memorial service have not been completed.
