Wondering While Wandering . . .
The Reverend Dr. Doak M Mansfield, Interim Minister

I'm a devoted amateur historian. Most of my reading is in these areas. Currently I'm finishing a great new biography of William Jennings Bryan, A Godly Hero by Michael Kazin. It is a fresh new investigation chronicling the life and contributions of the spiritual founder of what became the "responsive democracy: New Deal, Fair Deal, and the Great Society." Bryan was much more than the buffoon satired in Inherit the Wind--much more. He believed government must be an agent for economic justice and free from big money corruptions.

My fascination with history helps inform and frame my notions about the vital nature of 'story' in our being and becoming.

Something really telling occurs when new light, new information is focused on perceived established "truths." When normative stories are challenged with new insights and understandings, tension, stress, even conflict may happen.

The "truths' of science come to mind when seeking illustrations.  Established truths can serve for centuries or be of short duration and influence.

In spiritual matters established truths, authoritative dogma, doctrines, proscribed and prescribed by one for another: one culture, worldview, power, intelligential class, there seems to be possible one of two responses: one, denial and hostility or two, intrigue and interest. Yes, a pretty simplistic take on such heady matters, I suppose, but making the issue more complicated is but a way for distancing one from the reality of how we react as people: with fear and threat or with curiosity and openness.

Our ongoing challenge as Unitarian Universalists is an ongoing honest reviewing of our spiritual/religious understandings - story - and adapting, reworking it as new information and insights are discovered or maybe rediscovered.
William Jennings Bryan for all his fundamentalist faith and Bible thumping evangelizing pleaded for compassion and a justice as regards the composition of the human community and he saw nothing of it in Darwin's evolutionary principles: survival of the fittest. He saw with a clear perception the "Super Human" principles that would be the prototype for Adolph Hitler's sick, false, and horrific notions.

There is usually and thankfully more in most of our stories, personal and otherwise: the scientific as well as the spiritual.

Keep on thinking, wondering, and feeling...

Love ~
  Doak
Desk of the President
Thanks to all of you who do so much for us here at the church. The rest of us literally would not know what to do without you.

We are now gearing up for a new minister. In the spring, a candidate will be brought to us by our search committee and we will have an opportunity to eat with them, talk with them, and listen to them.  Others species in our world do the same as a group encounters a new member. They generally don't have arranged dinners and meetings, they do it with smell, with body posturing, and even with some form of combat (ritual or otherwise).  Humans do the same thing as we measure a possible new leader, a possible new force in our collective lives. (We do consistently avoid actual combat. And sniffing.)

As the time approaches, we all will be anxious about what's happening and when and where and . . . .   We know that we want to put our best foot forward to the candidate, but we have a little trouble agreeing on the best foot, exactly.  Happily the answer is simple.  Do what you do every church week.  Our Church personality is made up of all of us.  Acting like we think we ought to act toward others.

Lucky us, we get a chance every week to practice in a safe place the art of being our better selves.  Thank you for coming. You are an important part of the whole.

Administration as Leadership
As most of you know, I hosted and participated in training on Administration this month.  It was a great experience, both in hosting and participating.  I'm very thankful to everyone who helped make it happen.  Much of the training was about organizing your work, so that you have more time for the most important work, our children and youth.  And there were problem-solving strategies, which are always helpful when working with people.  All in all, I'm excited to be implementing some of these tools and improving our program.   And it is always wonderful to have a chance to connect with colleagues in person.

Family Connections
This Sunday after church we will meet at Lettuce Lake Park after church for a family picnic and playdate.  A pavilion has been reserved, but there is still a $2 entrance fee per vehicle.  Bring a picnic lunch for your family and treats to share, if you like.
March 1st is our first Mom's Meal potluck dinner.  5:30 in the Multi-Purpose Building.  Child Care can be provided.  Please RSVP ASAP!   Sign-Up is on the RE Bulletin Board or you can email me.

Tampa Pride Parade
Our Beacon Youth Group has taken the initiative to register to walk in Tampa's return of their Pride Parade.  The parade is March 28th in Ybor City.  Our youth group is in the planning stages and would like your involvement.  We hope to have a large group from our church walking.  Please email Erin Powers DRE, dre@uutampa.org, if you are interested in the planning phase.  More info will be coming soon.  Stay tuned to our Order of Service for up to date information.

Beacon Youth Group - meets Wednesdays at 6:30-8:30 in the Youth Room.  Youth ages 12-20 are welcome!

Spotlight on Search
The Ministerial Search Committee (MSC) is on schedule and working on the phase of the search process involving communicating with and evaluating ministers.  Confidentiality is critical at this stage, but we can report that we are very busy and that is a good thing.  We are meeting many interesting and dedicated Unitarian Universalists.  We find we are interconnected in so many ways and that we are enriched by each experience of connection.

The same can be said of the connections between MSC and the congregation.   Thank you all for your support of our work.   Thank you for accepting the changes that are happening in our congregation.  Some of you are embracing the changes and helping lead us forward.  Some of you are keeping our sense of stability in place by refreshing traditions and helping us stay connected and in right relationship.

Our community is what keeps us going.  We're busy; you might not see us in person that much right now.  Comments, questions and conversations are welcome in person anytime, or by email to search@uuct.org or attend Conversations with the Board.

Adult RE
by Jeff Austin
Wasn't it terrific recently on Valentine's Day to have a dance floor, decorations, delicious food and drink and more (such as childcare) to share with delightful UU friends and community members?  We made our Education Building sing and bubble with laughter, as well as miles of smiles from the faces of dance and party participants.  Not just because of who you are, Dear Readers, but also because this Valentine's Dance was due to an awesome team gathered by Diana Stevens and her husband Grant Wilson.  They centered much of the Valentine's Dance activity around the Education building room where Grant and Diana bring all who are interested and/or seeking knowledge to a discussion and meditation Adult RE class on Emerging Western Buddhism.  It takes place some Sunday mornings, such as February 22nd (memorably 2/22) and March 1st and March 29th, in the Education Room at 9:45.  Come along and have a smile ready for the youngsters getting ready for another beautiful Sunday.  These classes on Joseph Goldstein's book, One Dharma, are described on our website page on Adult RE, where you will also have information about other days of the week at UUCT and similar classes, perhaps led by Grant Wilson:
http://uutampa.org/adult-education/

With someone dear, I saw the play Love Letters by A. R. Gurney at St. Petersburg's Studio@620 recently.  It was part of our thrilling celebration of Valentine's.  Picture two adults alone on an intimate stage reading their letters sent back and forth starting with his acceptance of an invitation to her childhood birthday party in the 1930s. His birthday gift to her was a picture book by L. Frank Baum (The Lost Princess of Oz), followed by a lifetime of letters as they grew on through their lives and into late life. Do try to see it if Tampa producer Anna Brennan can stage it in a theater near you (or near your handy car pool). It was good again to see a theater director/performer I met and formed a friendship with as a result of my USF library schooling in public libraries: Bob Devin Jones.  There is a power in social activism, community outreach, and education for young and old when it is combined with the creative visual and performing arts.  Tampa's StageWorks Theatre or St. Petersburg's Studio@620 join nicely with what we do at UUCT, in the large dome as well on our festive dance floor.

UUCT mUUsic Group
Meets 7:30pm Mondays

Behold our muse. Not sure how musical you are? Afraid you'll be embarrassed?
Come to mUUsic Group anonymously if you like. Your secret will be safe with us.  So, please join us in the Small Dome. We're there every Monday at 7:30 PM.

In the spirit of old-time hootenannys and good-time jam sessions, this is an informal gathering of musicians, vocalists, and just plain music lovers who want to make or listen to mUUsic. Sing, play an instrument, drum, or bang on an upside-down waste basket. Get creative. It's all good.

Everyone is welcome, regardless of ability or experience. So come one, come all, and let the good times roll!  Questions:  muusic@uutampa.org

Special thanks to everyone who helped make our February Sheet Drive for The Spring Domestic Violence Shelter a tremendous success.  There are a few more donations coming in, so we'll update you with a final count on the number of sheets we'll be delivering to The Spring in the Order of Service in March.

HOPE Happenings
Hillsborough Organization for Progress and Equality
By Judy Lane

UUCT's Justice Ministry Network is our liaison to HOPE - the Hillsborough Organization for Progress and Equality. HOPE is unique in that it gives us an opportunity to come together with local faith groups to work for justice and equality by achieving long-term systemic changes that resolve local community problems.

We are building our Justice Ministry Network within UUCT to assure that we will meet or exceed our UUCT turnout goal of 60, toward the overall goal of 1,500, at this year's Nehemiah Action.
How can you participate?
  • Participate on the Affordable Housing Trust Fund Committee or the Criminal Justice Committee that developed the Tampa Ordinance Expansion and Civil Citations for Youth Issues between now and April 20th to help strategize and develop our solutions.
  • Attend the March 22th UUCT Justice Ministry Network Meeting, after church, to strategize towards our full participation at the April 20th Nehemiah Action, and distribute names of members and friends we will invite to the Action.
  • Mark April 20th on your calendar and commit to attend the HOPE Nehemiah Action. Can you bring 3 or 4 others with you? If 21 of us each bring 4 others, we will surpass our goal of 60!
  • Check now to see that these important dates are on your 2015 calendar:(Please avoid scheduling any UUCT events or meetings on these dates)
    • March 22nd - UUCT Justice Ministry Network Meeting, after church
    • March 23rd - Rally (for Network Members and others interested in being a Network Member) (Allen Temple AME Church, Ybor, 6:30 p.m.)
    • April 20th - Nehemiah Action (Mt. Calvary 7th Day Adventist Church, 6:30 p.m.)
    • April 26th - UUCT Nehemiah Evaluation Meeting, after church.
Involvement in our UUCT Justice Ministry and the activities of HOPE is an opportunity for us to live our values of justice, democracy and community in a very concrete way.  If you want to get involved in any way, please contact me, Judy Lane, at 813-901-9157 or Sharon Streater at 813-325-0455.

Let's work together for "HOPE for Justice" in Hillsborough County!
Do you walk around with your head in a cloud?
We all know the negative effects smoking has on the health of the smoker as well as the people in their vicinity but have you thought about how the fragrances that you are wearing affect the air quality of those around you?   Scented hair, skin and clothing products added to the perfume or cologne you may wear essentially contaminate and pollute the air that everyone shares.   When you see the word "fragrance" in a list of ingredients, then this means that the scent you smell is mostly, and often entirely, synthetic and chemically manufactured from petroleum or coal tar.  These chemicals can be harmful to the public in varying degrees, but especially harmful to those with chemical sensitivity.  This is not about an irritating smell, but about the negative effects of breathing in these chemicals.  The use of perfume, cologne, detergents and other scented products is far more common than tobacco use but is not regulated like smoking is.  We ask that you please consider this when you are preparing to come to Sunday services or anywhere where people are going to be in close proximity.  We want everyone to feel safe and breathe easy when we are together.

 Emerson Forum Remembered
End Of Life Care Concerns Growing In Tampa Bay And Beyond
Three years after UUCT, d/b/a/as the Emerson Forum; three couples from our congregation and Tampa General Hospital co-sponsored the first of two programs on end of life care, other religious, medical, legal and public groups are devoting rapidly growing time and attention to the issues raised at our conference. Our first conference, On End Of Life Care After Terri Schiavo, was held at the Stetson College of Law Center in downtown Tampa and was covered by co-anchor Brendan McLaughlin for the local ABC-TV news that evening,

Last year, world media followed the story of 29 year old Brittany Maynard, who moved to Oregon from California in order to obtain legal physician aid in dying of a terminal disease.  Oregon is one of only five states in the U.S. that have legalized such care, but 10 other states have similar bills before their legislature.  Florida is not among them. On February 6th of this year, however, the Supreme Court of Canada, in a unanimous opinion, struck down Canadian laws nationwide banning physician aid in dying.

On Saturday, November 15, fifty-two members and friends of UUCT spent the morning discussing specific end of life care issues that confront all people and their families.  Fran Davin, Deborah Adles and Doak Mansfield organized and led the program, focusing on issues that touch every family. Experts on psychological, legal and religious concerns attended as guest speakers. A form for sharing your end of life plans with the minister can be found on the UUCT website at http://uutampa.org/end-of-life.

This year, other local organizations have begun to devote time and attention to advancing the conversation.

On Tuesday, February 10, the Hillsborough County Medical Society heard Peter Reagan, the medical director for the Oregon chapter of Compassion & Choices (C&C), speak on the physician's changing role in end of life care. Dr. Reagan was the first doctor to prescribe under Oregon's Death With Dignity law.

Coming Up

On Sunday, March 8, the Jewish Community Center of Tampa (JCC) and Compassion & Choices are co-sponsoring the first of a two part on "Life: The Final Act." The first program, entitled Death with Dignity, will be held at Maestro's restaurant at the Straz Center. The speakers include:

Barbara Mancini, a nurse from Pottsville, PA, who was charged with "assisting in a suicide," when she handed her father morphine provided by a local hospice. She accrued more than $ 100,000 in legal bills before a judge ruled that there was not enough evidence to merit a case. Barbara was initially reported to the sheriff by a hospice nurse.

Other speakers include Daniel Wilson, the National Programs Director for C&C and Rabbi Mendy Dubrowsky, of South Tampa. Tickets may be purchase for $ 6 in advance at www.jewishtampa.com or for $10 at the door.  Dessert and a reception are included.

On Sunday, March 15, JCC will be showing the movie The Farewell Party, at 3 p.m. at the Sundial Theatre, 151 2nd Avenue North, in St. Petersburg. The movie is about a group of friends at a Jerusalem retirement home who build a machine to help a terminally ill friend hasten his death.  When rumors of the machine begin to spread, more and more people ask for their help, and the friends are faced with an emotional dilemma.  Rabbi Joel Simon will lead a discussion following the film. Advanced tickets are $ 10 and may be purchased at the JCC website. Your paid receipt for each event will be your ticket. For questions about the programs or registration, contact Rachel Tilow, at 813.264.9000.
 Spring Cleaning/Fix-up Volunteers Needed
If you can spare the time, your help would be greatly appreciated at the March 14, 2015, Buildings and Grounds (B & G) Day.  There are some major projects that are planned for the morning which require an expanded work force in addition to our usual stout hearted B & G Day attendees.  One of those projects is cleaning the stains in carpet in the Sanctuary. Work call that day is from 8:30 to 11:30 am.  Please come and help out.  (Submitted by Ed Benedict, Co-Buildings and Grounds Chair, Telephone (813) 968-1418.
