This Sunday, February 3

Dr. Holly Inglis, Church Educator, preaches on the familiar I Corinthians 13:1-13.  The sermon, The Eyes of Love, explores how to see one another in the Community of Christ with the eyes of love.  Click here for this week's Order of Worship.

SOUPER BOWL OF CARING

Wellshire Youth tackle hunger again this year! On Super Bowl Sunday, please join the Wellshire Youth in supporting Souper Bowl of Caring, the national youth initiative to assuage hunger. While many spectators across the country gather with friends - and snacks aplenty - to watch the game, many others go hungry. To lend a hand, please bring canned goods with you to worship next Sunday, February 3. After each service, youth will collect the cans for Metro CareRing, a Wellshire Local Mission Partner. Want your gift to stretch even further? Rubberband a dollar to your canned food donations! Contact Lauren Wiersma with questions. Click here to learn more about Souper Bowl of Caring.

Next Sunday, February 10

February 10 is Transfiguration Sunday. Dr. Bell will preach. The lectionary texts are: Exodus 34:29-35; 2 Corinthians 3:12-4:2; and Luke 9:28-36 (37-43). Transfiguration Sunday is always the Sunday before Ash Wednesday, as we turn toward Lent.

WELCOME, REV. CALHOUN!

The Committee on Ministry of the Presbytery of Denver approved the establishment of a relationship between The Rev. William Calhoun and Wellshire Presbyterian Church. Rev. Calhoun will serve as a Parish Associate during the interim period while we seek a permanent installed associate pastor. He will regularly participate in worship, serve as staff resource to our mission and services committees, and engage in pastoral care and counseling. His contract is for one year but may be renewed or modified at any time. Bill is no stranger to Wellshire: he has been to Israel twice with devoted Wellshire members, preached a series during Dr. Bell's sabbatical, and is a trusted friend to many on our staff. He retired as co-pastor of Montview Presbyterian Church a few years ago and is anxious to join in congregational life once again. He will begin his work with us in mid-February.

FAMILY TIES AND PIONEERS FELLOWSHIP

Join Pioneers (a group for couples, empty nesters, and older children) and Family Ties (a group for young families) for a combined evening of fun and games on Saturday, February 9 from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the church. Monte Carlo Bridge is planned...a card game of sometimes ridiculous rules which change with each hand.  Partners change too. Some skill is involved but mostly luck!  Dinner will be served and adult beverages shared. Childcare provided by Senior High Youth and donations will go toward the Senior High Youth Mission Trip to Chicago.  Main dish provided (baked sausage rigatoni).  Food assignments:

Last name:

A-I snacks for card tables.

J-S salads/sides.

T-Z dessert.

BYOB.  RSVP to Kelly Viseur or  Cammie Latta.  Questions?  Call Kelly at 303-290-9340.

REMINDER: PER CAPITA

Let's continue the tradition at Wellshire where every member pays their Per Capita amount in January.  Per Capita is a set amount of money per member - $30.00 for 2013 - that congregations pay to the larger church - Presbytery, Synod, and General Assembly.  The money covers such things as administrative expenses of each governing body.  Per capita dollars pay for the costs of holding a General Assembly, including paying for the travel, room and board of commissioners, several of whom would not be able to afford these expenses on their own.  By providing the primary means through which commissioners can gather to do their work, per capita dollars help to undergird our governance system.  Please plan to pay your family's per capita in January.  Mark your check on the memo line "per capita" and place it in the offering plate or mail it to the church office.  If you have any questions, please call our Director of Operations, Chuck Sparks, at 303-758-2233, ext. 212, or email him.

 MEMBERSHIP AT WELLSHIRE

Our sincere hope and prayer is that those who are drawn to Wellshire out of some spiritual quest, need or difficulty consider joining the congregation! Wellshire is a large, diverse, and lively congregation, and we hope each of you will find a spirited, Christian home here. If you wish to unite formally with Wellshire Church, please contact Beth Hamstra by email or at 303-758-2233, ext. 224. Membership at Wellshire is open to ALL who affirm faith in Jesus Christ by transfer of letter from another congregation, profession of faith, or reaffirmation of faith. Normally, the Session, which consists of 15 elders, meets on the second Sunday morning of each month to receive new members. Membership classes are offered three times a year but are not required for membership. You are certainly welcome to make an appointment and discuss the meaning of membership with one of our pastors. Also, you can glean much information about the church on the church website.

RELOADABLE KING SOOPERS CARDS HELP SEND WELLSHIRE YOUTH TO CHICAGO TO SERVE

One of the easiest ways to help send Wellshire Youth on the 2013 Chicago Mission Trip is to purchase King Soopers cards sold in the Narthex on Sundays and use them every shopping trip. 5% of every purchase made with the cards at King Soopers goes directly to the youth mission trip fund. For instance, a family that spends $400 monthly in groceries contributes $20 monthly to the mission trip fund; by June, that's $120 just one family has contributed to feeding, clothing, and housing another family. The youth are selling $10 RELOADABLE cards that anyone can buy and continue reloading at the King Soopers' customer service desk. Those who purchased cards in previous years from the youth can still use those cards, provided that the card hasn't had a balance of $0 for 90 days. It can be reloaded unlimited times, and funds continue to go to the youth mission effort with each use. If you don't know if you let the card go empty for 90 days, you're welcome to purchase a new one. Contact the Rev. Brian Daoust with questions or Lauren Wiersma.

Notes from the Presbytery presbytery

The Presbytery of Denver serves congregations.  Here are a few ways that is taking place right now:   The  Committee on Ministry provides liaisons to work with the Sessions and Pastor Nominating Committees of eight congregations who are seeking new pastoral leadership ....  New Beginnings, a consultation that is working in five congregations, is supported by both the Presbytery and the General Assembly.  Through this rigorous program, participating churches are seeking new vision as they move into the future....  Over the next month, the Sessions of all fifty-one congregations will participate in a review of their minutes and records by the Presbytery Stated Clerk.  This review aims to strengthen the work of all Sessions.... The Malawi Mission Partnership, a partnership of First Leadville, St. James and Trinity Churches, was approved for a 2013 grant for its work.
