Greetings!
This year's program was especially meaningful, linking the story of the Robert Russa Moton Museum with current student activism. Vanessa Diamond, HandsOn Greater Richmond's Director, spoke about the program in an interview on HuffPost Live:
- At 5:14, she describes the event and the story of the Robert Russa Moton Museum;
- At 6:25, she begins to speak about the work that high school students did organizing a walk-out in 2014 at Open High School in Richmond;
- At 18:45, she speaks about a VCIC program graduate's example of focusing on people to create change; and
- At 21:43, she references VCIC's follow-up resources that were provided at the event
We hope that you will take the time to learn about this inspiring program! And, as always, please let us know how VCIC can partner with you to build more inclusive, affirming, and just school communities. REGISTER NOW FOR SUMMER SESSION
2015 Connections Institute
The Harold M. Marsh, Sr. Connections Institute (formerly Metrotown) is the Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities' signature Emerging Leaders Institute program. Since 1993, this peer leadership experience has prepared high school student delegates to make decisions based on an appreciation of the vast diversity within Virginia.
The Connections experience begins with a residential program during the summer that allows student delegates to break barriers, deal with biased behavior, and develop an action plan to reduce prejudice in their schools. Brochures and registration forms have been mailed to high school principals and contacts for the 2015 session, scheduled for August 3-7.
For more information about registering your school or volunteering to serve on the Connections staff, contact Jessica Hawthorne.
