Greetings!

The past month, we have heard so many incredible examples of how VCIC's programming makes a difference for youth:

These are just a few of the inspiring stories we hear each month from students and adults whose lives have been touched by the Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities.

Please let us know how VCIC can partner with you to build more inclusive, affirming, and just school communities.  Contact our office by phone at (804) 515-7950 or by emailing Allison Conyers, Director of Education & Training, Jessica Hawthorne, Youth Program Coordinator, or Jonathan Zur, President & CEO.

PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT

Break the Cycle: Be the Change

The Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities has developed an assembly program entitled "Break the Cycle: Be the Change" for schools across the Commonwealth.  Examining the concept and consequences of prejudice, "Break the Cycle: Be the Change" is a fast-paced, interactive, 75-minute presentation.  Beginning with the roots of prejudice, the program demonstrates clearly its progression from thoughts, to words, to actions.  Using humor, role playing, audience participation, and real-life examples and stories, "Break the Cycle: Be the Change" motivates students to consider the ways in which they may have contributed to prejudice and helps them to assume the responsibility to work for change as agents of unity.

Contact Jessica Hawthorne, Youth Program Coordinator, to learn more about bringing "Break the Cycle: Be the Change" to your school!
PROGRAM OPPORTUNITY FOR PTAs
Building Diverse Boards & Committees

Our region is becoming increasingly diverse, and the people who need support and services from non-profit organizations are increasingly diverse, too. Is your leadership changing to keep up? Do your board and committee leaders look like the people you need to serve? Are they able to make informed decisions that reflect a diversity of perspectives, experiences, and worldviews?

The Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities is pleased to partner with Nonprofit Learning Point to offer "Building Diverse Boards & Committees" on November 11 and 18.  In this class, VCIC will work with you to identify what kind of diversity is helpful for a board and how these diverse groups can be sustained. Participants will identify innovative strategies for recruiting and retaining board and committee members that go beyond tokenizing to foster true inclusion. You will also be able to analyze your current organizational leadership, identify innovative strategies for increasing diversity, and explore best practices that facilitate successful decision making processes for newly-diverse groups.
