Greetings!

"I experienced a level of learning that no textbook could ever offer. Prior to [VCIC's Connections Institute], I did not understand much about the issues related to race, gender, religion, and body image or the variety of perceptions and stereotypes that we have all participated in and been a victim of. I knew about many of these things, but my knowing was generic whereas my understanding became intimate."

These powerful words were part of a speech a high school senior shared at VCIC's recent Tidewater Humanitarian Awards Dinner.  In recent months, they are just a few of the spoken and written words about the power of the Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities' work.  From TV news reports on Cox 11, WDBJ, WSET, WSLS, and WTKR, to the What Works RVA Radio Show, a listing in Inside Business, and an ad in the Daily Press, people all across Virginia are learning about our mission and programs.

As always, please contact our office by phone at (804) 515-7950 or by emailing Allison Conyers, Director of Education & Training, Jessica Hawthorne, Youth Program Coordinator, or Jonathan Zur, President & CEO, if we can support your efforts to foster respectful and affirming school communities.  Thank you for working with the Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities to achieve success through inclusion!

PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT

Break the Cycle: Be the Change

The Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities has an exciting Break the Cycle assembly program entitled "Break the Cycle: Be the Change" for schools across the Commonwealth.  Examining the concept and consequences of prejudice, "Break the Cycle: Be the Change" is a fast-paced, interactive, 75-minute presentation for middle or high school students.

Beginning with the roots of prejudice, the program demonstrates clearly its progression from thoughts, to words, to actions.  Using humor, role playing, audience participation, and real-life examples and stories, "Break the Cycle: Be the Change" motivates students to consider the ways in which they may have contributed to prejudice and helps them to assume the responsibility to work for change as agents of unity.  Contact Jessica for more information about bringing "Break the Cycle: Be the Change" to your school!

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITY

Building Inclusive Nonprofits

In partnership with Nonprofit Learning Point, the Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities has constructed a three-course series entitled "Building Inclusive Nonprofits" to support organizations as they seek to enhance diversity and inclusion!  Each two-day session will provide participants with a holistic view of how to engage a diverse group of stakeholders in non-profit organizations.  These courses are perfect for anyone interested in learning how to create and sustain an inclusive organization.

This semester's course is "Recruiting and Retaining an Inclusive Workforce," scheduled for April 18 and 25.  Participants will consider the role a diverse workforce plays in their organization's success. Through experiential activities, each participant will review the current state of diversity and inclusion efforts in a chosen organization and then identify a desired future state.  Register today!

Future courses are "Inclusive Ways to Work with Your Clients" and "Building a Diverse and Inclusive Board of Directors."  For more information, contact Allison.
