We've had calls already from customers saying they are seeing crabgrass in their lawns. It's too early to be seeing crabgrass yet. It is an annual grass that dies off in the fall, usually with the first frost. It will turn purple and die off, but first it spreads new seeds from the seed heads for new crabgrass the next season. The following spring, when soil temperatures reach a steady 55°F, these seeds germinate and the crabgrass plant cycle starts all over again. If you are seeing clumps of a wide-bladed, course grass now, it's most likely Tall Fescue (Rough Tall Fescue).
 | | Tall Fescue |
Tall Fescue is actually a turfgrass that is used in home lawns mostly in the transition zone of Kentucky/Tennessee and the south. This grass thrives in hot, dry weather when most other cool season grasses slow in growth. This turfgrass does not die off in the fall like crabgrass, so don't be confused by it. These patches of Tall Fescue can be treated with multiple applications of a product designed to kill only Tall Fescue, leaving the surround turfgrass healthy. This works best as a spot treatment only, not a blanket application.
Please call our office or email us if you're interested in this treatment.

Beware of Nonselective Herbicides
We see it happen every spring. Someone has a few pesky weeds pop up in their lawn. They buy a bottle of weed control (bottle says weed & grass control) and spot-spray those weeds. A week later they notice dead spots all over the lawn! They used a non-selective weed control that kills both the weeds and the grass. Another problem is a lot of the new non-selective herbicides are extended life so the last longer thus you will not be able to regrow grass in those areas you killed. If you ever find a desire to spot-spray your own weeds in your lawn make sure it is a selective weed control that will not kill the grass (read the label carefully). Better yet, give us a call and we will stop by and spray those weeds. We will be happy to come out and take care of things for you.

Tree Seedlings in Lawn
We've gotten a lot of calls and emails already this season about tree seedlings in the lawn or mulch areas. Unfortunately, lawn herbicides have very little effect on woody plants like trees, so there isn't much our applications can do to control them in a lawn setting. One of the best ways to rid your lawn of them is consistent mowing. Repeatedly cutting the tops off by mowing over them will kill the seedlings in most cases. You can pull them up if you want, but mowing is just as effective.
In the mulch areas and flowerbeds, they can be pulled out or mulched over. Steer clear of nonselective herbicides containing glyphosate as they're not very effective on the tree seedlings and they may kill or injure other plant material in the area.
