Fall Weed Control

We have begun our fall weed and feed applications and will be continuing them through the beginning of November. While fall may not seem like a great time to do weed control, it is actually the ideal time to do it. A high-quality product applied at the right time in the fall will help control weeds the following spring. So while your neighbors may see lots of dandelions popping up early next season, if you get our fall weed and feed application, you shouldn't see too many weeds early on next spring.

Irrigation System Winterization

Cracked Backflow

Don't forget to winterize your sprinkler system in the fall! It is very important to winterize your system otherwise you will likely have broken sprinkler heads or a cracked backflow in the spring.

We use an air compressor to force a large volume of air through the system to blow out all remaining water in the pipes, backflow, and sprinkler heads. The volume of air is more important than the pressure.

If you would like to schedule your winterization, please call our office at 734-699-0010 or respond to this email. Please include a couple times during normal business hours (M-F, 9-5) during October and November that would fit your schedule. We have limited Saturday and evening appointments available. We will do our best to work around your schedule but please try to be flexible as we have many other customer schedules to coordinate with as well. Thank you and we look forward to taking care of your irrigation needs this season!

European Crane Flies

European crane flies are emerging as a new pest in this area. The problem isn't widespread yet but it is spreading. The adult stage of the European crane fly and the common crane fly both look like a giant mosquito (see picture below).

The larvae, called "leatherjackets," grow to become nearly an inch-long and look like a brown caterpillar with no head or legs. The larvae become a problem in October, when they can consume enough turf roots, stems and leaves to cause visible injury to lawns. Damage begins to appear as a general thinning of infested turf, but may progress to large dead patches. Grub treatments done in July or August should protect against the European crane fly this fall.
