Tree Seedlings in the Lawn

We've gotten a lot of calls and emails already this season about tree seedlings in the lawn or mulch areas. Unfortunately, lawn herbicides have very little effect on woody plants like trees, so there isn't much our applications can do to control them in a lawn setting. One of the best ways to rid your lawn of them is consistent mowing. Repeatedly cutting the tops off by mowing over them will kill the seedlings in most cases. You can pull them up if you want, but mowing is just as effective.

In the mulch areas and flowerbeds, they can be pulled out or mulched over. Steer clear of nonselective herbicides containing glyphosate as they're not very effective on the tree seedlings and they may kill or injure other plant material in the area.

Grubs

Now is the time to schedule a preventative grub control application. The grubs are nearing their adult beetle stage where they emerge from the soil. Some of them will do major feeding damage on plant material as adults while others do very little feeding as adults. They then lay their eggs in your lawn, usually in late June to early July. Applying a preventative grub control application before the eggs are laid inhibits the eggs from hatching and keeps grubs out of your lawn for the rest of the year. If you currently have grub activity in your lawn or you've had activity in years past then it may be a good idea to do a preventative treatment. Grubs can still be treated later in the fall with a different insecticide, but by that time they will have damaged your lawn.

If you're not sure if you have this application scheduled just email us. We will be happy to check, and if not, give you pricing on this application.

Be Aware of Non-Selective Herbicides

We see it happen every spring. Someone has a few pesky weeds pop up in their lawn. They buy a bottle of weed control (bottle says weed & grass control) and spot-spray those weeds. A week later they notice dead spots all over the lawn! They used a non-selective weed control that kills both the weeds and the grass. Another problem is a lot of the new non-selective herbicides are extended life so the last longer thus you will not be able to regrow grass in those areas you killed. If you ever find a desire to spot-spray your own weeds in your lawn make sure it is a selective weed control that will not kill the grass (read the label carefully). Better yet, give us a call and we will stop by and spray those weeds. We will be happy to come out and take care of things for you.

Soil Conditioner

  • Soil Conditioner helps to build a better soil that is better able to sustain healthy, actively growing lawns.
  • Contains important nutrients, minerals, vitamins and other organic matter.
  • Improves soil quality, promotes bio-activity, and energizes plants.
  • Helps to break up compact soil.
  • Allows oxygen, water, and nutrients to more easily access the root zone of your lawn.
  • How it works: Positively charged soil conditioner particles (added to water and sprayed on lawn) surround negatively charged soil clumps, which breaks up soil and loosens hard soil.
  • Nontoxic to plants and animals and biodegradable.
  • Can be used in place of core aeration to help reduce soil compaction.
  • Provides many of the same benefits of core aeration and many long-term benefits that core aeration does not.
If you would like to know whether you are scheduled for a soil conditioner, or you would like additional information or to schedule one, please give our office a call at 734-699-0010 or email us at turfproinc@sbcglobal.net
