From Conference Minister, Rev. Dr. Campbell Lovett
We will follow the light, beautiful light,
Come where the dewdrops of mercy are bright.
Shine all around us by day or by night,
Jesus the light of the world.
(Refrain, "Jesus, the Light of the World)

In this Season of Epiphany, the Michigan Conference wants to highlight some great mission and ministries taking place in our midst. If your church has a mission project, educational activity, worship celebration or special effort that you would like to see highlighted and shared with other Michigan UCC churches, please send information to the Conference Office c/o Lisa Soulliere: lisa@michucc.org.

In this first installment, we want to highlight two of our pastors who are sharing their ministries through blogs. Check out the inspirational ministry of Plymouth UCC in Detroit via Rev. Dr. Nicholas Hood III at his blog site: https://nicholashoodiiiministries.wordpress.com/

Fire at Grass Lake Church
Federated Church of Grass Lake ~ American Baptist & United Church of Christ

On Wednesday morning, January 6th the Federated Church of Grass Lake was engulfed in smoke and flames from a fire that started in the furnace room. Staff members were able to call 911 and evacuate safely. Unfortunately, a newer portion of the building was totally destroyed. The 19th century Sanctuary was saved but was heavily damaged by smoke and water.
Pastor Scott Runyon has been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support from area churches and community members. Clergy from Chelsea, Grass Lake and Manchester held a prayer service outside the church on the 7th. A Sunday service of worship will be held next door at the Methodist church this coming Sunday.

Church leaders are currently meeting with staff from insurance and fire remediation companies. These meetings will result in a plan to restore the Sanctuary and move forward with the ministry of the church. Until that plan is complete, the church does not know exactly what offers of help it will need to accept. Therefore, please continue to keep Pastor Scott and his flock at Federated in your prayers. When they know what help is needed they will get the word out through this and other channels.

It's that time again...time for Yearbook Data Input!

We need your help this year - maybe more than ever!

It's time again for Yearbook Data input and we are encouraging and praying that all of our churches will participate before the March 7th, 2016 deadline

Churches will again input their own information directly into the UCC Data Hub. The Data Hub is open for church data input as of January 4, 2016.

Please click on the link below to follow instructions and find new information for inputting your church data.

We would really appreciate your help in increasing our reporting response this year!  Unfortunately, the Michigan Conference UCC dropped in our reporting percentage last year from 10th place to 16th place - a 9% decrease from 2013!

With a little extra effort we can push ourselves back up to the Top 10! Let's show our strength and get our results in as soon as possible! Wouldn't it be an awesome sight to have ALL of our Michigan Conference Churches reporting this year!

We are only a phone call or email away to help with any questions you may have. We can also input your information for you if you need assistance - just let us know!

Thanks so much for your help!

Lenten Book Study Suggestions

Is your church planning a Lenten program that includes a book study? Here are two books that are worth your consideration.

Dear White Christians: For Those Still Longing for Racial Reconciliation by Jennifer Harvey is a very helpful resource for understanding the differences between racial reconciliation and racial reparations. The book is written from the perspective of a white Christian who is also a professor of religion. This is a timely addition to the racial justice conversations taking place in our country at the moment. Dr. Harvey will be the keynote speaker at the Michigan Conference annual meeting in October of this year.

The National Book Award winner, Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates is a very personal reflection/letter written by a father to his teenage son. Coates grew up in inner-city Baltimore and had first-hand experience with gangs, drugs and the shortcomings of urban schools. His family life and higher education at Howard University, however, helped him to develop a powerful perspective about the prevalence of racial injustice in the United States. He shares his world view with his 15 year-old son and challenges all of us with his vision for how to move beyond the racism that engulfs us as individuals and a society.

These two books actually pair quite well and could be used together in a more comprehensive book study as well.
