From Conference Minister, Rev. Dr. Campbell Lovett
The 2015 Michigan Conference Annual Meeting theme is a short verse from Psalm 126. In the CEV it reads, "We are overjoyed." It is a good verse for us. In the midst of concerns about aging congregations, dwindling financial resources, the "nones" who don't attend church and the "dones" who are so done with it, we need to remember the many blessings of faith, hope and love that sustain us.
The psalm reminds us of other joyous exhortations. The Apostle Paul wrote to the Philippians, "Rejoice in the Lord always, again I will say rejoice." I like the way that Paul has to repeat the phrase in case we did not get it the first time: "Rejoice!" An annual meeting is a good time to be reminded to rejoice, for too often we focus on marching ever onward rather than reflecting upon actions and accomplishments of the past year. For the Conference. in this past year, there is a lot about which we can rejoice.
Four developments of the past year have, in my estimation, been a joy in the life of this Conference:
- The Vital Growth Mission Area Team, staffed by Rev. Cheryl Burke, is fully engaged with helping start new ministries and churches. The Nueva Vida church in Grand Rapids is a great example of National Setting, Conference, and Local Church collaboration. In addition, a variety of non-UCC churches are exploring the process for affiliating with the denomination. Surely, "God is still speaking" - and people are listening.
- Though we marked the conclusion of Nicole Havelka's ministry in our midst, the addition of Rev. Jody Betten as Interim Southwest Area Minister will assist the Conference in learning how to better serve our Associations and Local Churches.
- Our many ecumenical partnerships continue to bear fruit: we presented the Festival of Faith with the Disciples of Christ; we worked with other denominations to create the Lay Ministry Task Force; we participated in the UCC's Full Communion partnership with the United Church of Canada; and we collaborated with other judicatories in sponsoring Boundary Training and in contemplating Diversity Training.
- Engaging in a new lease agreement with Camp Talahi Nature and Retreat Center provides for their ongoing operation of this outdoor ministry enterprise and an exploration of how they might secure permanent ownership of the camp.
While these are positive developments for our life together as a Conference, I also want to share why I am overjoyed about significant ministries in our local churches. I am overjoyed because the local churches of the Michigan Conference are representatives of the United Church of Christ in their settings. Local church members are living out "the cost and joy of discipleship" and representing the United Church of Christ across the height, depth and breadth of Michigan. This means that:
- Our churches are often the most ecumenical and interfaith churches in their area. They relate well with congregations of other denominations and their pastors are often the most active in clergy groups.
- Our local churches are often the most supportive of community mission and outreach. Where there is a food bank, a food pantry, a shelter, or a clothing ministry there is a UCC church participating.
- When there is an issue of social justice at hand, folks in our local churches are discussing it, learning more about it, and/or advocating for a just resolution.
- Our churches are more likely than not to be saying: "No matter who you are or where you are on life's journey, you are welcome here."
Ecumenical, interfaith, outreach-oriented, community-minded, committed to social justice and radically inclusive - this is what it means to be UCC. I am overjoyed that this spirit is present in 145 cities, towns and villages throughout Michigan.
Therefore, with joy in my heart for the great work of Conference staff, the Board of Directors, and the Mission Area Teams, I commend to your attention each report that follows. As you read, I invite you to rejoice about the good things that are happening in our midst - to the glory of God! Again, I will say rejoice!
With you on the journey,
Campbell Lovett

In our prayers...
Please keep in your prayers, Karen Holcomb-Merrill
(President, Michigan Conference UCC Board of Directors) and her family on the death of her mother, Doreen Holcomb, who passed peacefully and surrounded by family on Monday, October 5, 2015. OBITUARY
Please keep in your prayers the family of Linda Moison Velasquez, (former Michigan Conference UCC employee) who passed away on October 6, 2015. Linda was diagnosed with cancer about a year and a half ago. She was hospitalized with pneumonia and put in long term care; finally in hospice. She worked for the Conference from 1989 to 2003, assisting Bob Heisler in the Business Office. She had a wonderful sense of humor, a great laugh, and love for all of her many pets. We have many great memories of our friend Linda. May you rest peacefully now in God's kingdom.
Please keep in your prayers, Rev. Dr. Raymond Lord
(retired pastor, Detroit Metropolitan Association). We received word from Dr. Lord's niece that he recently took a fall and broke the T12 vertebrae. He had emergency back surgery and is now receiving inpatient rehab at Crittenton Hospital in Rochester, MI. Cards and words of encouragement can be mailed to Dr. Lord: 933 Wildbrook Lane, Lake Orion, MI 48362.
Please keep in your prayers, filled with good health and emotional and spiritual support, the Rev. Ruth Moerdyk and the Rev. Eric Thorsen.
The Michigan Conference asks for continued prayers for Rev. Deborah Dean-Ware, pastor of Church of the Good Shepherd in Ann Arbor. Deborah has been diagnosed with breast cancer and is receiving medical treatment. Deborah is blogging about her experience at:
Please continue to lift up the Rev. Sherry Schacht (Eastern Association; retired pastor) and her family with prayers filled with strength and courage - determination and faith - love and comfort.
