Some Summer Homework!

There has been a lot in the news about religious freedom over the last year.

  • Citing the First Amendment to the Constitution, the UCC sued the State of North Carolina for infringing upon the religious rights of clergy to marry couples they deemed were suited for a loving lifetime commitment.
  • The State of Indiana, responding to a backlash by business groups and people of faith, reversed a state "religious freedom restoration act" that would have allowed business owners to use religious objections to discriminate against customers.
  • Michigan Governor, Rick Snyder, recently signed legislation to allow state-sanctioned and state-funded religious discrimination against same sex couples seeking to adopt children.

There are many other examples, but these three help us to frame the assignment. We need to know more about what the First Amendment says and what it does not say; we need to explore from whence these "religious freedom restoration acts" come; and we need an overview of how to apply all our new knowledge.

Here is a link to an excellent website that describes the First Amendment to the Constitution and its "freedom of religion" clause - and many additional documents to help us understand it in a variety of contexts:

https://www.law.cornell.edu/constitution/first_amendment

The "religious freedom restoration acts" about which we hear so much these days are based upon a federal law from 1993. Here is the original law and a variety of supporting resources:

https://www.govtrack.us/congress/bills/103/hr1308

So, how do we apply all our new knowledge in our local contexts? Rev. Emily Joye McGaughy-Reynolds from First UCC in Battle Creek called my attention to the Rev. Emily Heath article noted below; and a recent Battle Creek newsletter printed the helpful chart that follows based upon  Heath's article:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/rev-emily-c-heath/how-to-determine-if-your-religious-liberty-is-being-threatened-in-10-questions_b_1845413.html

How to Tell If Your Religious Liberties Are Being Violated

Your liberties ARE being violated
Your liberties are NOT being violated
You are not allowed to attend a religious service of your choosing.
Others are allowed to go to religious services of their own choosing, or not at all.
You are not allowed to legally marry the person you love.
Someone else is allowed to marry the person they love no matter what your religion says.
You are being forced to use birth control even though it is against your religion.
You are unable to prevent others from using birth control.
You are not allowed to pray privately in your home or in a public place.
You are not allowed to force others to pray publicly.
You are not allowed to purchase, read, or possess religious books and materials.
Others are allowed access to books, movies, and websites that you don't like.
You are not allowed to teach your children creation stories of your faith, in your own home.
Public school science classes are teaching children science.

So, this is an independent study course offered in the hope that we can be more clear about our own faith, when we might be denying someone else's religious freedom, and when ours are being threatened. The final exam is open-book and the course grade will be pass/fail!

2015 Innovation Awards

Innovation: Think - new, invention, advancement, creation, design, imagination, ingenuity, original, inspirational, resourceful, revitalizing, energizing!

What innovative ministry, worship, outreach, mission or other program would you initiate if money was not a barrier, but an opportunity for meeting a profound need in your community? What if you used this money as matching funds for your congregation and doubled the impact? What if you applied for other grants and added this award to accomplish your hopes for a world transformed by God's love?

We are inviting you to dream and to listen and to imagine what God is doing in your midst. Put that dream into an innovation plan and you are ready to apply for this award.

Inspiring Model of Ministry Event: Messy Church

November 8, 2015
McFarland United Church of Christ
McFarland, Wisconsin

Messy Church is an innovative practice developed in the UK which helps brand churches as welcoming places for children and families who are unchurched or unable to attend regularly on a Sunday Morning.

Inspiring Models of Ministry are events where we invite churches to come and observe the highlighted model in action. Attendees actually participate in the event or model rather than just hearing about it. At the conclusion of the event attendees reflect on what they saw and experienced, hear from the model's creators at the Inspiring Model church and discuss how they might transfer the model to their own ministry settings.

This event is sponsored by the Faith Formation Team of the United Church of Christ. Please feel free to contact the Faith Formation Team at beckwithi@ucc.org for more information.

Summer just got hotter at ETS!

We are so pleased to offer the '2015 Summer Studies for the Community'. This two-week series of workshops have been designed for laypersons and clergy. We're offering a variety of topics that should prove to be informative, challenges and inspiring.

*  ETS students whose program requirements include four workshops for graduation can satisfy two of those workshops by taking one Summer Study Workshop.

*  CEU's - For professionals who require CEU credit through continuing education, check with your organization to see if these workshops can qualify. One CEU is equal to ten contract hours with seminary professors who hold doctoral degrees.

He was a pioneer in facilitating healing retreats for those who had suffered from clerical sexual abuse, and he was one of the early columnists for FAITH Magazine in the Diocese of Lansing. Visitation and Funeral Mass information can be found on the St. Francis Retreat Center website.

Reading Changes Lives

In the U.S. 1 in 5 adults (20%) lack reading skills beyond a fourth grade level. We are reminded in 1 Corinthians 12, that we are all part of one body through Christ. When any member of our community suffers, we all suffer.

We invite congregations to join us in our three-part service project, Engage 3 Ways, with local , national and global actions planned to raise literacy rates. Together we can support organizations that engage in the life changing work of teaching children and adults how to read.

two-bicyclists.jpg Ride a bicycle to General Synod in Cleveland from mid-Michigan? That's nuts!

If you think that bicycling from Lansing, Michigan to Cleveland, Ohio over four days instead driving four hours is silly; that camping out on the floor of a church after bicycling sixty to seventy miles sounds more like torture than fun, then you'll probably not want to join me and others bicycling to the 30th General Synod in Cleveland, Ohio.

I admit it.  The idea was hatched as a reaction to a delegate (a rural western state if I recall correctly) that suggested that if we supported our denomination working towards being divested from fossil fuels we should turn in our plane tickets and walk home.  I may have taken time at a Speak-Out and suggested while I wouldn't walk back to Michigan from California, I would bicycle to Cleveland in 2015.  It was my little part to show them that it could be done.  I looked at some maps, contacted some churches along the way that could house bicyclists overnight, and second-guessed myself every turn of the pedal.

It's really going to happen. Leaving from the Lansing area June 22, stopping in Manchester for overnight, another stop southwest of Toledo, before arriving in Cleveland in time for General Synod.  As much as possible, we'll route ourselves on rails-to-trails in Ohio, but there will be urban streets in the cities - you must be comfortable riding with motor vehicles.

There is a cost involved, but it's rather small (we pay for the fossil fuel for the SAG wagon - hauling the night-time equipment).  You need a good bicycle in good repair, a pannier or bike bag to carry gear you need for the day, and money for meals (and ice cream).  You should also plan for a way to get back from Cleveland (I've got some space in a pickup truck) since I suspect our return schedules are unique.

If you're really interested in bicycling four days in late-June to Cleveland, contact Harold Beer via email: beer@msu.edu or by phone (517) 484-1032.
