Rev. Nicole Havelka, Southwest Area Minister, will depart Michigan in June for a new position with the Ohio Conference. Nicole has been a vital presence of the Conference in staffing Grand West Association and Southwest Association. Resourcing Church & Ministry Committees, churches in transition, and Executive Teams has been a big part of her ministry. In addition, she has helped the Conference develop youth and young adult resources, convened a lay ministry task force, and upgraded much of the resource section of the Conference website. Nicole's innovation, creativity, and passion for ministry will be missed. In this Faith for Thought video, Nicole shares some farewell reflections.

Reading Changes Lives
In the U.S. 1 in 5 adults (20%) lack reading skills beyond a fourth grade level. We are reminded in 1 Corinthians 12, that we are all part of one body through Christ. When any member of our community suffers, we all suffer.
We invite congregations to join us in our three-part service project, Engage 3 Ways, with local , national and global actions planned to raise literacy rates. Together we can support organizations that engage in the life changing work of teaching children and adults how to read.

Earthquake Coverage: Is it time to reconsider it?
In light of the minor earthquake that was centered here in West Michigan on Saturday, May 2nd (and felt throughout Central Michigan), I thought it would be a good time to discuss coverage.
Most churches in Michigan covered by the Insurance Board DO NOT have coverage for damage to property caused by earth movement. Earthquake and flood coverage are offered as optional endorsements to the Insurance Board policy but, in the seven years I have been your representative in Michigan, few churches have opted to pay the additional premium to add the coverage.
Depending on the value of your church property, the additional premium runs around $400 per year. If you would like to know if your church has earthquake coverage (or flood), or if you want a quote on adding either one, please let me know at mlambert@allenharmon.com.
Remember, an earthquake does not have to destroy your church to deprive you of its use. Even a small quake that compromises the foundation may prevent you from occupying the building until major repairs are completed.
Sincerely, Mark Lambert |
Ride a bicycle to General Synod in Cleveland from mid-Michigan? That's nuts!
If you think that bicycling from Lansing, Michigan to Cleveland, Ohio over four days instead driving four hours is silly; that camping out on the floor of a church after bicycling sixty to seventy miles sounds more like torture than fun, then you'll probably not want to join me and others bicycling to the 30th General Synod in Cleveland, Ohio.
I admit it. The idea was hatched as a reaction to a delegate (a rural western state if I recall correctly) that suggested that if we supported our denomination working towards being divested from fossil fuels we should turn in our plane tickets and walk home. I may have taken time at a Speak-Out and suggested while I wouldn't walk back to Michigan from California, I would bicycle to Cleveland in 2015. It was my little part to show them that it could be done. I looked at some maps, contacted some churches along the way that could house bicyclists overnight, and second-guessed myself every turn of the pedal.
It's really going to happen. Leaving from the Lansing area June 22, stopping in Manchester for overnight, another stop southwest of Toledo, before arriving in Cleveland in time for General Synod. As much as possible, we'll route ourselves on rails-to-trails in Ohio, but there will be urban streets in the cities - you must be comfortable riding with motor vehicles.
There is a cost involved, but it's rather small (we pay for the fossil fuel for the SAG wagon - hauling the night-time equipment). You need a good bicycle in good repair, a pannier or bike bag to carry gear you need for the day, and money for meals (and ice cream). You should also plan for a way to get back from Cleveland (I've got some space in a pickup truck) since I suspect our return schedules are unique.
If you're really interested in bicycling four days in late-June to Cleveland, contact Harold Beer via email: beer@msu.edu or by phone (517) 484-1032.

Prophetic Integrity Mission Area Team
The PI-MAT met on Saturday, May 9 at the Conference Office. The MAT reviewed the implementation of Annual Meeting resolutions, and heard an impressive update from Walt Kemnitz about the Dream of Justice working group that is seeking to end mass incarceration. Dream of Justice helped to co-sponsor two resolutions going to General Synod this summer. The MAT also reviewed the revised resolution guidelines. Information about submitting resolutions to the Michigan Annual Meeting will be circulated in June.
The PI-MAT also said goodbye to Rev. R.J. Hronek who has chaired this MAT for the past six years. Pastor R.J. has received a call to a church in Thomasville, NC and will be moving this month. The next meeting of the PI-MAT will be held at the Conference Office in East Lansing on Friday, July 17 at 11:00 a.m. All are welcome.

Joys & Concerns
Please keep the Pomerville Family in your thoughts and prayers. In the early morning hours of Wednesday, May 6th, Andrew Pomerville
(Senior Pastor, The People's Church of East Lansing) and his family awoke to their house on fire. Thankfully all of them made it out of the house and to a neighbors home unharmed; unfortunately, their house was devastated. The family is in need of a 2 - 3 bedroom house to rent, preferably in Haslett, for the next 6 months while their home is being rebuilt. They have two young children and a dog. If you have such a home or know of someone who does, please pass along this information to The Peoples Church of East Lansing 517/332-5073. Thanks very much!
Please keep in your prayers the Schacht Family - Rev. Sherry Schacht and her husband Chuck. Chuck had open heart surgery on Tuesday, May 12th. Continued prayers for Sherry filled with support & strength, courage & faith and love & comfort as they both face huge health challenges.
Please continue your prayers and good thoughts for Rev. Gene McCornack and his wife Mariann; he continues to receive therapy and improve.

The Dream of Justice (DOJ) Calendar & "Issue of the Month"
WE ARE THE DREAM OF JUSTICE ("DOJ") group of the Michigan Conference of the UCC ("MCUCC"). Last fall the MCUCC passed a resolution to help put an end to the "racialized" Criminal-Justice/Mass Incarceration system. The DOJ is the group formed by the Michigan Conference UCC to implement the resolution. This racialized criminal justice system impacts disproportionately on people of color; the impact is intentional and has racist roots. Michelle Alexander, author of The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration In The Age Of Colorblindness, provides important information about this latent but real racism in the U.S. This book has opened-the-door so we can clearly see the ongoing racism.
Read more about the on-going work of the Dream of Justice Team and learn how you can get involved.
Follow the link below to read the resolution and sign the Statement of Support.
