A Halloween Missive
Our Church's Wider Mission (OCWM)
In many of our Michigan UCC churches, autumn is a time for the annual stewardship campaign. In some churches, members are invited to help meet the budget; in others, members are invited to give in response to God's blessings in their lives; and in others still, members are encouraged to share from a sense of spiritual discipline. Some share a tithe, some a percentage or two higher than before, and others the same as last year. In all of our churches, the giving of members and friends is put to good use maintaining a house of worship in the community, providing Christian education and fellowship, and reaching out in mission.
One way that churches reach out in mission is by contributing to Our Church's Wider Mission. OCWM is churches honoring the covenant with the wider church. In Michigan, 70% of OCWM remains at the Conference level to support Michigan programs and 30% goes to the National Setting to help sustain a national and global presence. If you consider that most staff members are program staff, a very small percentage of your OCWM contributions pay for administration - though administration is always needed to manage ministry and mission. CLERGY: Stand in Solidarity for Transit Concerns
|
The Greater Detroit community has reached the tipping point for cooperation and the common good around regional transportation for all citizens with the establishment of the Regional Transit Authority. Already the public transit providers are establishing cooperative strategies to improve current service in the short-term and provide more service in the future .
We are asking clergy to stand in solidarity for the transit concerns of their congregations at the Build Transit. Build Business for a Better Life summit on Tuesday, November 18, 2014. We will be demonstrating the importance of transit as a justice issue by our very presence. Please bring leaders from your congregation to stand with you as we hear from Mr. Michael Ford, CEO of the Regional Transit Authority and others who will lead us into a bright future where transit serves one and all.
