Compassion and Education in the Face of Fear
At the recent Michigan Conference Annual Meeting in East Lansing, Rev. Nadia Bolz-Weber preached about the Good Samaritan. Jesus told this parable in response to the question: "Who is my neighbor." Rev. Bolz-Weber shared about how God doesn't want us so much to be good, but to be new. Our transformation to newness begins with compassion.
Our Michigan Conference congregations can be important entities in the midst of an overwhelming media blitz regarding the Ebola virus outbreak in West Africa and the United States. Fear induces isolation and ignorance; compassion and education foster neighborliness and hope. Here are a few items for your attention and response:
1) This is short notice, but this Saturday the Centers for Disease Control will have a conference call for faith based organizations. Please find someone in your congregation who can be a part of this call and share updates with your members. Read more...
2) In partnership with its churches in Liberia, Shrine of the Black Madonna, UCC in Detroit has launched an Education and Awareness on Prevention of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) Project. Currently, they are raising funds to carry out an awareness and education program on the existence and prevention of the Ebola virus especially among youths and children in 250 households in two cities - Monrovia and Ganta City. Read more...
3) The United Church of Christ, through our mission partners in West Africa is also on the ground assisting with the humanitarian needs created by the Ebola virus. This link to a UCC News article shares more information about how UCC Disaster Ministries and One Great Hour of Sharing are responding to the outbreak: http://www.ucc.org/news/ebola-outbreak-10012014.html
In the midst of fearful times, our compassion and education can help make a difference!
Faithfully,
Campbell Lovett

Annual Meeting
THANK YOU!
|
Special thanks are extended to the many, many people who helped to make the Annual Meeting of the Michigan Conference, United Church of Christ so successful! Thanks especially go to The Peoples Church for being such a great place to hold our meeting. Their staff and members provided an extravagant welcome and gracious hospitality. Thanks to our keynote speaker, Rev. Nadia Bolz-Weber, who had to overcome a flight cancellation, an unanticipated four hour drive in a rental car, sleep deprivation, and a crushed smart phone to be present with us! Thank you also to the record number of delegates and visitors who helped to make this an exceptional gathering. Thank you one and all!
