Rev. Dr. Campbell Lovett
Conference Minister
|
Friends -
As the United Church of Christ enters a new chapter of its history, there have been a number of significant changes at the National Setting. The new by-laws that were approved in 2013 constituted a new board structure and a smaller Collegium of Officers. These changes were coupled with a reduced budget and staffing shifts. In addition, we have received news this week of the early retirement of our General Minister and President, Rev. Geoffrey Black. His retirement will coincide with the conclusion of General Synod next June in Cleveland, Ohio. I have attached a copy of his letter to this article.
Here in Michigan our ministry and mission continues to gain momentum. New ministries are beginning, churches are being supported for local mission, and the United Church of Christ is present in the most pressing social justice issues of our time. As the National Setting continues to adjust to current realities, I want to thank the Associations, Local Churches, and Authorized Ministers of the Michigan Conference for their strong support and commitment. Together, we are making a positive difference! Please continue in your prayers for every setting of the church, and, in particular, for Rev. Geoffrey Black and his ongoing leadership with us.
Geoffrey Black Retirement Announcement
Peace,
Campbell Lovett
Conference Minister

Michigan Conference UCC 2014 Innovation Awards
|
Innovation: Think - new, invention, advancement, creation, design, imagination, ingenuity, original, inspirational, resourceful, revitalizing, energizing!
What innovative ministry, worship, outreach, mission or other program would you initiate if money was not a barrier, but an opportunity for meeting a profound need in your community? What if you used this money as matching funds for your congregation and doubled the impact? What if you applied for other grants and added this award to accomplish your hopes for a world transformed by God's love?
We are inviting you to dream and to listen and to imagine what God is doing in your midst. Put that dream into an innovation plan and you are ready to apply for this award.
Applications will be ranked by: "innovation", completeness of "Innovation Plan" (see below), the potential for others to replicate the idea, reasonable likelihood of being accomplished, and commitment to send in a report to the 2015 annual meeting on success and learnings.
Applications will be evaluated by the Vital Growth Mission Area Team of the Michigan Conference United Church of Christ. The total funds available are $10,000. Awards will be given to the best proposals submitted by two to five congregations. The largest award available is $5,000.

Sponsored by Plymouth, UCC, Detroit & Michigan Conference of the UCC

Dr. Susan Thistlethwaite, former president of Chicago Theological Seminary, and a popular writer and commentator, will be coming to Detroit on September 10th to share in a special day for clergy and laity. At 10:00 a.m., Dr. Thistlethwaite will lead a workshop on "Reading the Bible from the Streets" at Plymouth, UCC, 600 Warren Avenue, Detroit. An update from the Detroit Metropolitan Association regarding the water shutoffs in Detroit:
|
Friends in Faith and Conscience:
Many of you are among the signers of the religious leaders an allies letter to stop the water shut-offs and end the process of privatization. This is a follow up invitation to a number of actions and religious presence.
1. This Friday 4:45 pm at Coleman A Young Municipal Center (The Spirit of Detroit statue at the City County Building) there will be a prayer service related to the end of the shut-off moratorium and the cost to seniors of the bad bargain in the Bankruptcy Trial, both of which resume next week. We will have ecumenical voices and music. Please come. Please get your people there. Please participate if you're able and contact me about roles you might play. BWKellermann@gmail.com 313-433-1967
2. I have been praying that the faith community would step forward in direct action and there may be such opportunities in the weeks to come. Again, contact me with your interest.
3. There is a big demonstration planned for the first day of the Bankruptcy trial. August 29 at 9am at the Federal Court House Lafayette and Cass. There is such a direct connection between the efforts to privatize water and the bankruptcy itself. Please get your members to that gathering. If you have a bus or a van and might be able to bring a load of folks from a community or senior center, give me a call.
4. We are still looking for communities of faith and spirit to become water stations for the distribution of both information and water. Please call We the People at 844-42WATER.
Thank you again for your witness in these days. The Spirit has truly been moving this campaign forward on the waves of faith.
For all those organizing,
Bill Wylie-Kellermann

Please join Reverend Keith Titus, Re-Member's founder, to discuss the Feather II Capital Campaign.
In 2010, Re-Member purchased a 160-acre parcel of property, just east of Porcupine, South Dakota. This new property - our future home, which we call Feather II - offers dynamic opportunities to further develop our program on the Pine Ridge Reservation. The plan is ambitious and will cost $1.5 million.

"Governance
and Ministry: Rethinking Board Leadership"
Presented by Author and Consultant Dan Hotchkiss
|
September 11 - 13, 2014
1609 University Avenue
Madison, WI
Thursday, Sept. 11th: 6:30-9:00 p.m.
Friday, Sept. 12th: 9:00-12:00 p.m. (lunch provided) and 1:00-4:00 p.m.
Saturday, Sept. 13th: 8:00-11:30 a.m.
Cost: $150 per person
Good governance begins with clear roles and authority; it succeeds when lay and professional leaders do ministry together as collaborating partners. Dan Hotchkiss consults with congregations that are ready to build boards that delegate effectively, demand high performance, require sound stewardship, and reflect continually on mission and purpose - at board meetings and in wider gatherings.
This workshop is for clergy and lay leaders ready to transform the way their congregations make decisions. It is for consultants, trainers, and denominational executives who want to sharpen their governance consulting and leadership skills. Participants will deepen their understanding of the Governance and Ministry approach, and engage in practical, intensive work with their colleagues to prepare for work in a wide range of church and synagogue traditions.

Seth's Blog
.....Seth Godin's riffs on marketing, respect, and the ways ideas spread
|
I need a sales rep (or ten) to do the selling so I can do my work. And investors to put up the money so I can do my work. And an accounting staff so I won't have to think about inflows and outflows so I can do my work. And an admin to process and answer all my email and my paperwork... And employees who already know what to do so they won't ask me... And an organization that not only doesn't make me go to meetings, but also instantly understands and adopts my best ideas... And a coffee boy to bring me an espresso, a police escort so I don't get stuck in traffic and a publicist so every media outlet in the world communicates what I'm working on. By now, you've probably realized: This isn't going to happen. Not as completely or as flawlessly as we'd like to hope. We need the leverage that comes from working with other people, but that leverage also means that we're responsible. People who do great work also embrace the fact that this is their work too. It's not merely an interruption or a distraction, it's part of what they do. There are no monasteries reserved for productive, successful artists who regularly ship inspiring work. Our culture responds to instigators and impresarios who figure out how to make a ruckus in a complicated world. Years ago, you had to work with a quill or a manual typewriter. You needed to wait for the post office and you had no free and highly-leveraged outlet for your work to be seen by others. You had no access to a huge, instant and free library of the work that has come before... and yet, despite all of those missing elements, great work was created. My guess is that the few people who find themselves isolated with nothing to do but what they believe is their work find a way to distract themselves with something anyway. And people who have too many distractions to actually do any real work are in that bind because they haven't invested enough time, effort or risk in their organization and their process. Yes, there's a sweet spot. As you obtain leverage, that leverage becomes part of what your work becomes. We are leaving you to do your work. Go! Posted by Seth Godin on August 13, 2014
