CARING FOR THE LEAST OF THESE
Many United Church of Christ congregations in Michigan provide soup kitchens, food pantries, job-training programs, child care centers and more. These services truly make a difference in many people's lives. Yet there is a second step in our call to minister to the "last, the least and the lost." That is the call of public policy advocacy. Advocacy works to find out what is causing people to lose their job, their homes, their capacity to put food on the table for their children. Then, advocates take action to try and change these systems. In our conference, the group charged with advocating for "the last, the least, and the lost" is the Prophetic Integrity Mission Area Team, PI-MAT for short.
At present, we are working on several issues. We have a group, The Dream of Justice team (DOJ), working to end mass incarceration here in our state. DOJ was inspired by Michelle Alexander's book, "The New Jim Crow". At this point, DOJ is primarily trying to get the word out about the racial discrimination and injustice inherent in our legal system. They have developed a workshop surrounding these issues. The group would like to present this workshop to as many churches as possible in the state. If you would like to learn more about this workshop and/or schedule one for your church contact Walt Kemnitz. Walt's e-mail address is wkemnitzjr@yahoo.com.
We have people who are working to stop the water shut-offs in Detroit. In case you didn't know, the City of Detroit has decided to shut-off water to those people who haven't paid their bill. The issue is that the shut-offs are not of the commercial accounts with the greatest debt - sometimes into the thousands of dollars. Rather the city has decided to cut-off residential accounts often of the poor and indigent. Without water, sanitation and health quickly become an issue. If you would like to help, contact Dr. Paul Van Oeyen (ptvo@aol.com) who is the Facilitator of DMA's Social Justice Committee.
PI-MAT is also asking that you write the governor and state legislators about a recent ruling by the Michigan Supreme Court. A law has been passed in the state that juveniles tried as an adult could not be sentenced to life without parole. The Supreme Court earlier this month decided that the law would not be applied retroactively. This ruling means 363 individuals who had received, as juveniles, life sentences without parole prior to the law being passed would remain in prison for the rest of their lives.
PI-MAT is always looking for new members both lay and clergy. If doing public policy advocacy work is something you feel called to do, we would invite you to join us. We typically meet every other month. Most generally, we schedule our meetings on the third Saturday of the month. The group usually meets in East Lansing at the conference office. We meet in East Lansing because it is equally inconvenient for people on both sides of the state. If you are interested in joining our team or have a suggestion for the team please contact me, Rev. R.J. Hronek (hronrj3@yahoo.com). Even if you don't join us, prayers are always appreciated!
Blessings,
Rev. Dr. RJ Hronek

|
Innovation: Think - new, invention, advancement, creation, design, imagination, ingenuity, original, inspirational, resourceful, revitalizing, energizing!
What innovative ministry, worship, outreach, mission or other program would you initiate if money was not a barrier, but an opportunity for meeting a profound need in your community? What if you used this money as matching funds for your congregation and doubled the impact? What if you applied for other grants and added this award to accomplish your hopes for a world transformed by God's love?
We are inviting you to dream and to listen and to imagine what God is doing in your midst. Put that dream into an innovation plan and you are ready to apply for this award.
Applications will be ranked by: "innovation", completeness of "Innovation Plan" (see below), the potential for others to replicate the idea, reasonable likelihood of being accomplished, and commitment to send in a report to the 2015 annual meeting on success and learnings.

Submitting a Resolution: 2014 MI Conf UCC Annual Meeting
|
Dear Colleagues,
The Annual Meeting of the Michigan Conference United Church of Christ will be October 10th & 11th 2014 at The People's Church of East Lansing. The Prophetic Integrity Mission Area Team is charged with the task of calling for resolutions. They may be submitted for consideration at the Conference Meeting by a local church, an Association, a voting delegate or the Board of Directors. In compliance with our bylaws, please find attached a copy of the Michigan Conference United Church of Christ 2014 Guidelines for Resolutions. The deadline for submitting a resolution is July 25, 2014.
Be sure to mark the date on your calendar and, if you have not already done so, now would be a good time to recruit the delegation from your local congregation. Ordained and Commissioned Ministers with standing in one of the six Associations of the Michigan Conference, as well as Licensed Ministers who have been given voting privileges by one of the six Associations of the Michigan Conference, are considered delegates. Additionally, every local church is entitled to be represented by two lay delegates plus one youth delegate (younger than 22 years old).
Blessings for the Journey,

Welcoming Central American Refugee Children
|
Welcoming Central American Refugee Children
Rev. Cheryl Burke
Our daughter, Adrienne, is ¾ Mexican and ¼ Salvadoran. How do I tell her about the hatred that people are spewing toward children coming here from Central America? How do I protect her and prepare her for such hatred in her life? These are of course questions of a privileged white person, who doesn't think that "our" children should have to know about or experience such things. People on the margins always have to ask such questions.
This week I attended a press conference of faith leaders calling on the city of Lansing to declare Lansing a welcoming city for Central American refugee children. In our staff meeting we also read a devotional from Michael Piazza about the children coming to the United States. Please read the attached documents and pray and preach and speak and witness and act as the Spirit moves.

UCC Disaster Ministries Matching Grant project
|
The UCC Disaster Ministries Matching Grant project is aimed at helping to restock Church World Service School Kits. Conferences and congregations support these efforts by pre-assembling various types of Church World Service kits that are stored and can be shipped at a moments notice. UCC Disaster Ministries was recently notified that stock supplies of CWS School kits were very low due in part to the on ongoing situation in Syria. In an effort to support congregations in restocking these essential kits, UCC Disaster Ministries is offering matching grants totaling up to $50,000 for congregations assembling CWS School Kits. Grants will be awarded at $250/congregation on a first come first serve basis.
For details and guidelines about the project, click on UCC Disaster Ministries Grant Request/Report Form below. Thank You!

Life, Death and Life Again: The Experience of Howard Storm
|
On Saturday, August 16, at 7:00 p.m., Howard Storm will be in Lansing to share his story and take questions at Pilgrim Congregational United Church of Christ (UCC). The event will be free of charge, with donations accepted to cover expenses. Pastor Storm will also deliver the pastor's message at Pilgrim's Sunday morning church service on Sunday, August 17, at 10:00 a.m. The public is invited to both.
In 1985, Howard Storm had a near-death experience that drastically changed his life. the experience and the change it sparked in him were so astounding that his book, My Descent Into Death, attracted the attention of famed author Anne Rice, who declared "There's no doubt in my mind that he's a mystic."
Before his experience, Howard Storm was Chair of the Art Department at Northern Kentucky University. After his near-death experience, Howard Storm attended seminary and became an ordained United Church of Christ minister. Storm has appeared on television programs including Today, Oprah, and Sally Jesse Raphael, and he's been featured on The Learning Channel, Discovery Channel, History Channel, and a number of Christian radio programs including Trinity Broadcasting Network.
Pilgrim Congregational UCC is a Welcoming and Affirming church located in downtown Lansing at 125 South Pennsylvania Avenue, just south of MIchigan Avenue. The church and this event are handicap accessible. For more information, visit www.PilgrimUCC.com or call the church office at 517/484-7434.

UCOM (United Church Outreach Ministry) Gardens
|
"I watered the garden AND my brother. It was FUN," says 11-year-old Alex.
In time for planting warm weather crops, United Church Outreach Ministry (UCOM), a covenanted ministry of the Michigan Conference United Church of Christ; Metro Health Hospital and the City of Wyoming collaborate to empower our neighbors to "farm" in Wyoming's Marquette Park, not far from the UCOM offices.
"As much as we love being here for people in their food emergencies, we are even more exited to offer gardening opportunities so that people can provide much of their own food-cutting down on grocery bills and pantry trips, as well as showing their children where food really comes from and having the satisfaction of producing healthful, organic food for their families," says Dr. Bruce Roller, UCOM Executive Director.
UCOM is honored to work with the City of Wyoming and Metro Health to provide another opportunity for our neighbors to provide for themselves and their families and to make our community a better place for everybody to work and live.
UCOM also provides 60 4x4' gardens in people's yards in our community as well as a hoop house with ten gardens in the organization's parking lot. Keep up with all the "growth" at www.UCOMgr.org and on Facebook and Twitter.

Books by Rev. Dr. David Moffett-Moore, DMin, PHD
|
The Spirit's Fruit: We are called together as Christians to a fruit-filled life. While God blesses us with one or more gifts as He wills, none of us receive all the gifts. But all of us are encouraged to live a Christ-led life in which all the fruit of the Spirit may grow in abundance. With a personal beginning, Dr. David Moffett-Moore escorts each student into their own personal study of The Spirit's Fruit: A Participatory Study Guide. Dr. Moffett-Moore gives us wonderful tools for discussion and prayer to break up any hard ground and pour Christ's LIving Water into our spirits in the study itself aids more fruitful growth.
Creation in Contemporary Experience: What we believe about God as creator impacts our theology and action in many ways. In this book, Dr. David Moffett-Moore will examine some of these implications by looking at topics as diverse as quantum physics and chaos theory, hermeneutics, ethics, and how we tell stories of faith. This volume looks at contemporary scientific findings through the eyes of faith and applies them to how we live in this, God's world.
These and other titles are available by Barnes and Noble, Amazon, Energion Publications, or your favorite bookstore.
