Typhoon Haiyan Response Efforts
A message from Conference Minister
Rev. Dr. Campbell Lovett

To the Michigan Conference:

We are no longer strangers to the horrific aftermath of natural disasters around the world: from tsunamis in the Pacific, to hurricanes in the Gulf and Eastern Seaboard, and tornadoes throughout the Midwest. Now, we are receiving word of the devastation wrought by Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines. As in the past, we are called upon to remember Jesus' words from Matthew 25, "Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family,*you did it to me."

Attached to this note are two letters for your attention. The first is from members of our Michigan Philippine Partnership committee. These are people who have lived in the Philippines or visited there many times. They bear personal witness to the great need for our immediate response. The second letter is from Rev. Jim Moos, the United Church of Christ Executive Minister for Wider Church Ministries. Rev. Moos shares with us how to donate and where to look for further information about this disaster.

Please share this information widely with your church community.

With you on the journey,

Campbell Lovett

Conference Minister

We Appeal To You In Jesus' Name
We have all witnessed in the past few days the unspeakable horror Typhoon Haiyan brought to the Philippines. The devastated region in the central Philippines is precisely where our "Michigan Philippine Partnership" is concentrated. Never in Philippine history has such complete devastation ever occurred.

The people affected are our friends, our sisters and brothers in Christ.

Michigan Conference UCC churhces have been in a dynamic partnership with Filipino Christians in the United Church of Christ in the Philippines (UCCP) for the past 35 years. Filipino church leaders, youth workers (for Camp Talahi), choirs, and representatives from Philippine churches have visited more than 100 Michigan UCC churches over the years.

Tacloban City and the surrounding area has been utterly devastated. Only a few homes or buildings remain standing, and estimates are that perhaps 10,000 people have died. Eight of us from the Michigan UCC remember the gracious hospitality we received during a visit to Tacloban City and the island of Leyte 15 years ago.

Our Philippine partners desperately need our help. Right now, when most MIchigan Confernece churcehs are involved in our own local annual stewardship efforts, we are requesting a major, "second mile," giving effort from our churches. This is for Jesus' sake, on behalf of our brothers and sisters in the Philippines. PLEASE - make a special appeal in your local church!

Disaster relief support should be sent directly to the

Thank you for your prayerful consideration of this request. We will keep you updated.

Yours in Christ,

UCC's Response to Typhoon Haiyan

Dear Colleagues:

I write to inform you of the UCC's response to Typhoon Haiyan and invite your assistance in helping spread the word.

Xiaoling Zhu, Global Ministries Area Executive for East Asia & Pacific and Susan Sanders, Minister for Global Sharing of Resources, have been in regular contact with the United Church of Christ in the Philippines, Church World Service and the ACT Alliance since last Thursday.  Here are some updates:

  • One Great Hour of Sharing initial commitments have been made to the ACT Alliance for $25,000, and to the United Church of Christ in the Philippines for $5,000..
  • A blast e-mail (attached) encouraging generous support of the appeal is being sent today to 60,000+ UCC members and friends.
  • The appeal and UCC response to Typhoon Haiyan will be featured in KYP on Tuesday, November 12, along with a downloadable bulletin insert for use in congregations.

Please consider adding a link to these resources to your weekly communication with the pastors, leaders and congregations of the conference you serve.

Thanks so much for your assistance.

Peace,
