Rev. Dr. Campbell Lovett, Conference Minister

Passing the Buck on Climate Change

Okay, so I did say that I would write more in this issue of the E-Bulletin about climate change and the two resolutions that General Synod will act upon this summer. I did hear from a few folks who shared important information both in support of continuing investments in fossil fuel corporations and in support of fossil fuel divestment efforts due to the devastations of rising air temperatures from the carbon emissions of cars, factories, and energy generating plants.

Whatever I have to say about this matter pales in comparison to what Rev. Jim Antal shared with the Nebraska Conference UCC at their annual meeting last week. These two PDF files - one a keynote address and the other a Sunday sermon - are very significant "call to arms" for those of us in the religious community. Each is a powerful reminder of the moral power of our churches that should be mustered at this critical moment in the history of our planet. Jim Antal is the Conference Minister of the Massachusetts Conference. I commend these presentations to you with the hope that they will spur the churches of the Michigan Conference to begin new conversations about our role in helping to save Mother Earth.

What a great first effort for our Michigan 2x2. For fifty days after Easter, fifty of our Conference churches engaged in special mission activities with a community partner or two. The results are impressive - not simply in items donated or dollars raised, but in the number of lives touched. A special thanks to all our participating churches that engaged in mission and reported their results to the Conference! We will receive and record reports for another two weeks on the website and list the final tallies in our mid-June E-Bulletin. Look for stories about the lives touched in future E-Bulletins!

All of our part-time, full-time and volunteer college, hospice, hospital, military, CPE, prison, and nursing home chaplains are cordially invited. The event will be held at Albion College, 611 E. Conference Minister, Campbell Lovett will lead a conversation about how the Conference can better support our many chaplains.

This will be a great opportunity to meet other chaplains, share in fellowship, and be refreshed for the tasks at hand.  Please RSVP to Lisa Soulliere at the Conference Office (lisa@michucc.org).

We need YOU to help us "Tell Our Story"
As the saying goes, "A picture tells a thousand words..."
Help us to tell our story in photographs and words!

We are looking for photographs and brief captions/descriptions that help us tell the story of the Michigan Conference United Church of Christ - to each other and those beyond our state.

Please read through examples of fun facts, that you may or may not know; things that are happening in our local churches, with the UCC Women of Michigan, and Camp Talahi - to name a few.  Tell Us About Your Local Church & Ministries

The Ambassadors for the Compassionate Generosity Mission Area Team of the Michigan Conference are working with the summer interns to put together a brochure and power point to "tell our story." Please send your photographs and descriptions electronically to Lisa at the Conference office (lisa@michucc.org) by July 1st.

We want to know all about YOU, YOUR CONGREGATION and YOUR MINISTRY for JESUS CHRIST.

Conference recruiting Ambassadors to say "Thank You"

The Michigan representative to the UCC's Executive Committee, Penny Lowes, and Conference Minister, Campbell Lovett, are working with the Compassionate Generosity Mission Area Team to begin an OCWM Ambassador program. The goal of this project is to recruit a dozen "ambassadors" in each Association to visit every local church and share expressions of thanks. Local churches join in the mission of the wider church through their support of Our Church's Wider Mission. A program to systematically say "thank you" for support and answer questions about the work of the wider church is very important in helping churches feel connected to the mission and ministry of the Association, Conference, and National Setting of the denomination.

Retired Clergy, former board members, mission committee members, General Synod delegates, those who were trained as Mission Interpreters, and anyone else who loves the United Church of Christ are being invited to take part in this innovative program. If you are interested in finding out more information about OCWM Ambassadors, please email or call Lisa Soulliere at the Conference Office (lisa@michucc.org)

Before You Go on That Summer Mission Trip -
READ THIS INTERVIEW

Conference staff recently sat down with Mark Lambert, the Michigan Representative of the United Church Insurance Board to talk about summer mission trips.

Q: Hey Mark, we've got a lot of local churches heading out this summer for mission trips. Is there anything these churches should do in advance?

Mark:  You may have sold the church bus long ago. But that doesn't mean your church is free from transportation risk. Every time personal cars transport people to and from church-sponsored functions, the church could be assuming some liability for the occupants' safety.

Q: You talk about liability, Mark, are you a lawyer too?

Mark: Let me stop right here and say I am not a lawyer, and that this should not be construed as legal advice.  You must seek the advice of an attorney licensed to practice in Michigan before acting on this information. That being said, let's talk about "entrustment".

The church could be held responsible for the acts of the drivers of private cars on church-related business because it "entrusted" its members to the care of the driver. So, if the driver acts in a negligent way and people are injured, the church could be charged with "negligent entrustment." This could be construed as a failure by the church to recruit competent drivers, or a failure to train and monitor them.

Q: Is this something our church insurance policy might cover?

This risk in a church insurance policy is addressed by a coverage part called the "Hired and Non-Owned Auto" section. Here is what you should do to make sure you are covered:

  1. Contact your agent to be sure Hired and Non-Owned Auto coverage is in place on your policy. With some companies, this coverage part is automatically included in every policy. With other companies, you must add it by endorsement and pay an additional premium.
  2. Once you confirm that the coverage is in place, ask "Who is an insured?" for the purposes of this coverage. Make sure that church members and volunteers are named in this section.
  3. Check your limits. One or two million in coverage seems to be the limit most often seen in this coverage part.
  4. Since this part also covers the operation of rental vehicles, ask if physical damage to the rented vehicle is covered.

Q: This is great advice, Mark! Is there a website that has more good information like this?

Mark: The Insurance Board has a tremendous resource to help you with these issues - and many more - that relate to the operation of a vehicle owned by the church, or the coordination of transportation provided by volunteers. Go to www.insuranceboard.org . On the home page, click on Safety Solutions, and then look in the middle of the page for a hotlink that says Manual, Loss Control - Vol. 3 - Transportation.

Of course, you are free to browse through the many other FREE safety resources at our site. You don't have to be a participant in our property insurance program to use any of our prevention resources.

Q: Thanks, Mark.

Veteran of the Cross dies at 96
Roger L. Shinn
Roger L. Shinn in 1966
Picture provided by The New York Times

One of the saints of the United Church was Roger Shinn, a noted author and professor at Union Theological Seminary in New York City. We were saddened to receive the news of his death. Veterans of UCC History and Polity will recall two of Shinn's books, "We Believe," and "Confessing our Faith." These are wonderful books detailing Shinn's evolving interpretations of the Statement of Faith of the United Church of Christ - a statement that he was intimately involved with writing back in 1959. As a tribute to Shinn, why not include the Statement of Faith in one of your summer services? Here is a link to his obituary: http://www.ucc.org/news/roger-shinn-05202013.html

UCC Insurance Board: Fire Prevention Art Contest
To prepare for Fire Prevention Week (Oct. 6-12) and for use in the Insurance Board's 2014 Calendar, the Insurance Board invites you to create and submit original artwork.

This is an opportunity to put summer art activities directly to work in the care of your community churches and camps. Discuss with children how fires start. Ask them to create images that help them remember.

S.T.E.M. workshop:
"Prayer Connecting with Social Action"
Saturday, June 15, 2013 |  9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. | Cost: $50
"Prayer Connecting with Social Action"
Led by the Rev. Denise Griebler

This course will show how the faith in action and faith through piety are interwoven. Using contemporary and biblical examples we will examine how our activism can be strengthened through enriching our prayer lives. As we enrich our journey, our personal expressions of faith will take on new meaning as we move from our prayer closet into the world.

More information on the S.T.E.M. program can be found on the Michigan Conference UCC website:  www.michucc.org

"Making Informed Decisions"

UPDATE: Prophetic Integrity Mission Area Team (PI-MAT)
As always the Prophetic Integrity team had a full agenda:
  • Our first Advocacy Day went well. We have reviewed the feedback and plan to make revisions toward offering similar events, perhaps in various locales.
  • We are pleased to announce that we have been awarded a Brown Grant from national to fund our Inclusive Justice program. Within the next few weeks we will plan workshops throughout the conference.
  • On July 13th we will participate with the UU Social Justice Network and leaders from the Jewish community in a Reproductive Justice Conference in Detroit. A save the date flier is attached.  SAVE THE DATE - Flyer
  • Draft Resolutions are due by June 19th. Submit them to Lisa Soulliere ( lisa@michucc.org). Review of proposals, as well as, the Conference resolutions guidelines be conducted by the team at the June 22nd meeting after which the team will send those who have submitted proposals, the details of how to proceed with the process.
  • PI-MAT continually evaluates its effectiveness and updates procedure to be good stewards of our resources. We are working toward stronger relationships with churches and leaders. At our next meeting we will discuss how social action and social justice ministry interface. Although we want to focus on advocacy we realize that hands on projects contribute to the trusting relationships in which advocacy has the deepest meaning.
Open House:  Sustaining Pastoral Excellence
Sustaining Pastoral Excellence (SPE) will hold an Open House to introduce to both those in ministry, as well as the general public, all about SPE. A tie won't keep Dad warm: Church World Service (CWS)

Thinking of giving your Dad another tie for Father's Day? How about warming your Dad's heart instead while helping Church World Service share the gift of warmth with those who need it most?

During a time of crisis a tie won't keep your Dad warm but an emergency blanket from a Blankets+ Sunday would. Warmth during a time of crisis is essential to survival. Your congregation can provide that warmth by holding a CWS Blankets+ Sunday.

Through the help of congregations like yours CWS was able to distribute over 22,000 blankets during times of need in 2012. This includes the more than 10,000 blankets that went to help victims of Hurricane Sandy.

Schedule your Blankets+ offering now.  When your congregation or group partners with CWS it lets people know in times of crisis that they are not forgotten. We are eager to provide your Blankets+ resources today and to assist you in any other way we can.

Contact:  Heather Willson at 888-297-2767 or hwillson@churchworldservice.org to order your Blankets+ offering supplies. Find out more at www.blanketsplus.org

Joys & Concerns ~
Please keep in your heart and in your prayers the family of the Rev. Dr. Randolph B. Hellwig, who passed away in his Sun City West, Arizona home at the age of 82 from an illness, on Tuesday, May 7, 2013.

Rev. Hellwig was the "founding pastor" of Pilgrim Congregational UCC in St. Joseph, Michigan.  He is survived by his wife Carol to whom he shared 38 wonderful years. His ashes will be spread on an island in the St. Lawrence River in upstate New York, where Randy proposed to Carol.

A private memorial service has been held in the Sun City West home of former Pilgrim Congregational UCC members, Vivian and Forrest "Bud" Skelley.

Sadly, 48 hours after his death, Randy's older brother died on Thursday, May 9th.

Condolences and statements of sympathy may be sent to Carol Hellwig. She would appreciate hearing from their Pilgrim Family. Memorial donations can be made to Pilgrim Congregational Church - 1200 W. Glenlord Rd., St. Joseph, MI 49085.
