Words from Conference Minister
the Rev. Dr. Campbell Lovett

"Jesus called the twelve and began to send them out two by two..."

Mark 6:7

In the Diana Butler Bass book, Christianity after Religion is this wonderful paragraph:

"Jesus did not walk by the Sea of Galilee and shout to fishermen, 'Have faith.' Instead, he asked them to do something: 'Follow me.' When they followed, he gave them more things to do. At first he demonstrated what he wanted them to do. Then he did it with them. Finally, he sent them out to do it themselves. They discovered that proclaiming the kingdom was not a matter of teaching doctrine; rather, the kingdom was a matter of imitating Jesus' actions. Jesus did not tell them to have faith. He pushed them into the world to practice faith."

I love the way Bass reminds us that proclaiming God's realm is a matter of imitating Jesus' actions in the world. It is this action in the world that is the foundation of the upcoming Conference-wide program, Michigan 2 x 2.

Michigan 2 x 2 is a program in which each one of our churches can participate. It is quite simple: find a mission partner in your community with which to affiliate, and then keep track of your engagements between March 31 and May 19, 2013 (Easter - Pentecost). It could be an organization that you already support; or it might be an agency or program with which you have wanted to try something special. Either way, imagine what extra good work you could do during this time. Then, keep track of your actions - cans donated, hours spent, people encountered, lives changed, etc. The Conference website will post the results and we will celebrate our faith in action and all the work that we can do - 2 x 2!

We will be looking for some lead congregations who want to begin early and get us off to a running start. If your congregation would like to lead in this way, please be in touch. Otherwise, start thinking about your community mission partner and begin planning for a special effort.

I know this program will be a great success because each one of our churches is already active in mission and outreach. It will be good for us to see how significant our cumulative efforts are state-wide.

With you on the journey,

Campbell Lovett

A very special event:

Dear Michigan Conference Clergy and Congregations:
ucc-color-logo

I have received word from Plymouth United Church of Christ in Detroit and the Senior Minister, The Rev. Dr. Nicholas Hood III, of a very special event on November 11th to which we are cordially invited.  On that Sunday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. at Plymouth, The Rev. Dr. Geoffrey Black, General Minister and President of the United Church of Christ, will preach at a service of worship for the wider-UCC community.  This will be an opportunity to hear more about Dr. Black's vision for the UCC and to speak with him first hand regarding where he feels the Lord is directing the path of our denomination.

I am excited about this opportunity to hear Dr. Black's vision for our beloved church.  I so appreciate the hospitality of Plymouth UCC and Dr. Hood, and I look forward to sharing in fellowship and conversation with many of you on the 11th.

Sincerely,
Campbell Lovett
Conference Minister

A Unique Jewish-Christian Dialogue

With Rev. Dr. Pamelajune (PJ) Banks-Anderson and Rabbi Michael Zimmerman

Wednesday, November 14th, 2012, 7:00p

1007 Kimberly Drive, Lansing MI 48912

We welcome you to the SECOND in a series of lively and free-floating encounters between two independent -minded spokespersons for their respective traditions.

Unlike traditional dialogue processes dedicated primarily to friendship and harmony (which we assume are already present), this exchange will examine the tough issues; racism, anti-Semitism, diversity, and the doctrines that have divided our faiths throughout history.

Seeking personal testimonies and portraits for General Synod 29 theme:

God's Vision: ______
Written by: Connie N. Larkman

What is God's vision for you, for our world? If you were asked to choose one or two words that encompass God's vision, what would you say? Your word, your definition. Leading into next summer's General Synod, you, your church, and your community are invited to fill in that blank. Finish this phrase.  God's Vision: ______.

That is the theme of the United Church of Christ 29th General Synod. "God's Vision: ______." An unfinished statement that we are looking to each of you to complete, with a word or two that describe your personal feeling.

UCC Scarf Project for General Synod 29 designed to reinforce fabric of safety for violence victims
Written by Jeff Woodard

If rainbow-splashed scarves blowing in the California breeze on a hot summer day don't raise a few eyebrows and generate some dialogue, the Rev. Marja Coons-Torn doesn't know what will.

In a colorful, symbolic move to stem the tide of violence - most notably, the recent wave of bullying  - Coon-Torn has created the UCC Scarf Project with a goal of crafting 3,000 scarves in time for the United Church of Christ's General Synod 29 next July in Long Beach, California.

ACTION DAY:  Support of Proposition 3

25% Renewable Energy by 2025

A resolution supporting the approval of Proposition 3 was voted in favor at the Michigan Conference Annual Meeting; can we take the next step? We are wondering if members of the Michigan Conference United Church of Christ are interested in setting up a phone bank and volunteering on October 30th, the Day of Action.

If you are interested please sign up HERE; you will receive information on logistics for the day and a training for making the calls.  The goal on Oct. 30th is to reach 60,000 voters in Michigan, educate them about Prop 3, and ultimately encourage voters to vote yes. We are working with many organizations to accomplish this goal, and every volunteer is incredibly helpful.

"Life is the best gift. Everything else is extra"

An African Proverb says "Life is the best gift. Everything else is extra". By hosting a Church World Service Alternate Gift Fair this holiday season you will be changing lives. You will be supporting the transformational work of Church World Service (CWS) around the world.  Thanks to congregations like yours, CWS has been a beacon of hope for people in need for more than 65 years.

Order you Alternative Gift Fair Packet today.  In it you will find resources to help you organize an engaging and successful event that can bring together all facets of your community. In the packet you will find:

  • How to host an alternative gift fair that involves everyone in your congregation.
  • A poster to help promote your event.
  • A copy of the new CWS "Best Gift" catalog.
  • A sample gift card.
  • An order form for extra posters, catalogs and other materials.
  • Information on additional resources available online.
  • An envelope to send your donation to CWS.

Alternative gift fairs provide an opportunity to honor those we love with a gift that recognizes their generosity and reflects their compassion.  Through alternative giving, your congregation can open a dialogue around the true meaning and purpose of gift giving - and explore a new dimension of faithfulness.  All while assisting those who struggle not for material goods but for their very survival.

To order a CWS Alternate Gift Fair Packet or for more information please call Pam Folkers at 888-297-2767 or email pfolkers@churchworldservice.org

Joys & Concerns:

Please remember in your thoughts and prayers, Pastor Harry Clark (St. John's UCC, Niles) who on Friday, November 2nd will undergo surgery to remove a small tumor in his chest.  Several scans have been done and no other tumors have been found in his body.  At this time it appears no other treatments will be necessary after the surgery.
