Words from Conference Minister
the Rev. Dr. Campbell Lovett
Then they came to Capernaum (Mark 9:33)
In my last few articles, I have focused on my transition to ministry in Michigan and what I am learning/hearing about churches in the Conference. Today, I want to remind us that we are part of a larger denomination in a world that has needs that far surpass most any needs we may have in the United States. For much of this year, a terrible conflict has been raging in Syria. If you look at a map of the Middle East, you will notice that Capernaum - the site of next week's lectionary passage and where the disciples argue about which one of them is the greatest - is about twenty miles from Syria. Thousands have died in the fighting there and millions have been displaced. Many of the displaced are now living in refugee camps in Syria's neighboring countries - primarily Turkey. They number almost three million.
There is a lot of information about the conflict in Syria and how you and your church can help in relief efforts. The United Church of Christ and the Disciples of Christ share a common witness through Global Ministries. You can find more about this partnership at: http://globalministries.org/about-us/
Global Ministries has a staff person assigned to Middle East concerns, Dr. Peter Makari. Dr. Makari provides incredible insight on Middle Eastern affairs and is an important resource with our ecumenical partners in the area. You can find more news from him about Syria at this link: http://globalministries.org/mee/countries/syria/
In addition, the United Church of Christ is a member of the World Council of Churches (WCC). Our General Minister and President, Geoffrey Black, recently returned from a WCC meeting in Crete that adopted a statement regarding the war in Syria. "The statement concludes with an assurance that the WCC 'prays for the reign of peace with justice in Syria and in all countries in the Middle East'. The Central Committee also appealed 'to the international community to respect the ability and responsibility of the Syrian people to find solutions to the crisis, and to refrain from outside military interventions.'" The text of the full statement can be found at: http://globalministries.org/news/mee/wcc-calls-for-dialogue-and.html
The United Church of Christ is also supporting relief efforts in Syria and neighboring countries through One Great Hour of Sharing. You can find a full list of our partners in the Middle East at this link: www.globalministries.org/mee/partners
For more information about our UCC partners and opportunities to join in prayer and relief efforts, please check out these links:

http://www.actalliance.org/stories/new-surge-of-violence-in-syria-humanitarian-aid-need-of-the-hour
Your donations to Our Churches Wider Mission help change lives not only in Michigan but around the world. I thank you for your support of OCWM; and I thank you for having conversations in your church about ways that you can pray for peace in the Middle East and aid those affected by the violence.
God of Justice, God of Peace: as Jesus foretold his betrayal and death, the disciples argued about which one of them was the greatest. Help us to remember Christ's call to be servants of all as we seek to support those affected by war in Syria. Amen.

It's Time for COOKIES!!
To all of you who love to bake - we would love to have you share your talents once again by baking cookies to share at this year's Annual Meeting, October 5th & 6th in Battle Creek.
We are asking each church to bring four (4) dozen cookies to share. Our theme is "For such a time as this"(and my feelings are - there is always time for a cookie!).
IMPORTANT Please do not make any cookies containing nuts of any kind.
If you have a new recipe you have been wanting to try, maybe a specialty cookie (sugar-free) or dessert bar ~ we welcome it all! Please remember to omit the nuts!
Because we are having our meeting in a hotel setting, we needed to change our cookie project just a bit. Please place 3 or 4 cookies into a snack size bag; these cookie treats will then be added to our 'Welcome Bags' passed out to everyone when they arrive and check-in at the Registration Table.
Please contact Lisa at the Conference office if you can help with cookies: lisa@michucc.org. Cookies can be brought to the Registration Table when you arrive.
We thank you very much for your baking efforts and look forward to the sampling!!

"THANK YOU"!! From Acts of Love founder, Will Hall
Dear Michigan Conference,
I want to share this letter from Will Hall, founding organizer of Acts of Love. He came to Detroit on September 1, 2012 and delivered books to children in the Highland Park area. Thank you to Dr. Wendell Anthony and Dr. Constance Banks Simon for their support and Fellowship Chapel UCC for being a collection site and for organizing some of the books. I hope that Acts of Love will come back to Michigan and/or that we can build on its vision of making sure that all children have the opportunity to learn to love to read because they have books available to them.
Peace,
Cheryl (Associate Conference Minister)
THANK YOU ~ Will Hall

Joys & Concerns:
Please hold in your heart and in your prayers, Marjorie (Marge) Lentz and her family, on the passing of her dear husband Charles (Bud) Lentz. Bud passed away September 6, 2012. Bud served in many different capacities within the Detroit Metropolitan Association, the Michigan Conference UCC, and the National UCC setting. We are left grateful for knowing him, appreciating our time working with him, and feeling blessed to have experienced his many gifts and talents. A funeral took place on Monday, September 10th at Hope United Church of Christ in Clinton Twp.
An update on Rev. Joe Malayang
This is a portion of an update about our friend and colleague, Joe Malayang - as written by his daughter:
We are so happy to report that Joe was discharged today and is now home. Over the last few days, Dad's labs improved so much and his physical therapy (PT) went very well that he was released to his home, he did not have to go to a rehabilitation center. Dad is so relieved to be at home, he was in the hospital for 15 days! When he stepped outside of the University of Michigan Hospital, he said he just tried to soak in the sun, trees and air.
What a blessing all your calls, emails and hymns have been. We ask that this week Dad (and all of us ) is given time to adjust to home-life before any extensive visits. We very much appreciate your love and support and know that they were a major part in Joe's recovery.
