Words from Conference Minister
the Rev. Dr. Campbell Lovett

MOVING FROM DE- TO RE-

"Why do your disciples not live according to the tradition of the elders...?"

Mark 7: 5b

When the Pharisees asked Jesus this question, what they may have been asking was, "Why don't your disciples do things just the way we have always done them?"  In response, Jesus rebukes the Pharisees and scribes for elevating their human "tradition" to the level of divine commandment. This got me thinking more about one of the topics in my last missive, congregational vitality and the comment we sometimes hear in reaction to new proposals, "Well, because we've never done it that way before."

I am interested to see how similar models outlining the life of a congregation are. Many of the congregational life cycle models spring from the classic organizational life cycle which includes:  Birth, Growth, Maturity, Decline, and Death.

Martin Saarinen has adapted this cycle in his classic Alban Institute resource to include: Birth, Infancy, Adolescence, Prime, Maturity, Aristocracy, Bureaucracy, and Death. George Bullard presents the life cycle and stages of congregational development. He includes Gestation, Birth, Infancy, Childhood, Adolescence, Adulthood, Maturity, Empty Nest, Retirement, Late Aging, Old Age, and Death. Alice Mann, also a consultant with Alban Institute, weighs in with her cycle: Birth, Formation, Stability, Decline, Death. The Methodists have a resource that displays Birth, Growth, Stability, Decline, Decline, Decline, and Death. The Episcopalians list Birth, Shared Beliefs and Missional Goals, Nostalgia, Decline and Conflict, and Death. The Center for Progressive Renewal uses these models to place churches into one of four Quadrants of church vitality: New Church, Solvent/Healthy Church, Declining Church, Dying Church.

Though all these models have some variation in presentation, what they all have in common is they indicate that unless you add a lot of re- there is only going to be de-. What I mean to say, is that unless there are a lot of words that begin with the letters "re" in a church there are only going to be more words that begin with the letters "de." When the "de-cline," "de-nial" and    "de-ath" begin, they must be countered by some "re-definition", "re-development", "re-newal", "re-vitalization", "re-birth", and "re-surrection."

But you know what? Not only do the church vitality folks counsel an influx of energy into the equation, they also encourage churches to remember and revive the reasons for the birth of the church in the first place - not that these should be held higher than Holy Scripture, but the answers to these questions are important. On what were we founded? What was our original excitement about mission? What were our organizing principles and vision? Tying into that original energy is one way to begin the revitalization. So in an odd twist, we actually are called back to the "tradition of the elders." And, just perhaps, that is not so bad - if it can help us today prepare for a vital tomorrow.

I look forward to hearing not only your stories of birth, but also your visions for the future. Remember, even the prophet, Joel, knew that our old folks could dream dreams!

Loving Parent, help us to remember those good traditions and the committed elders that got us off to wonderful beginnings in the life cycle of our churches. Help us to reclaim some of the  re-   power in order to fend of the de-, de-, and still more de-. Amen.

It's Time for COOKIES!!

To all of you who love to bake - we would love to have you share your talents once again by baking cookies to share at this year's Annual Meeting, October 5th & 6th in Battle Creek.

We are asking each church to bring four (4) dozen cookies to share.  Our theme is "For such a time as this"(and my feelings are - there is always time for a cookie!).

IMPORTANT
Please do not make any cookies containing nuts of any kind.

If you have a new recipe you have been wanting to try, maybe a specialty cookie (sugar-free) or dessert bar ~ we welcome it all! Please remember to omit the nuts!

Because we are having our meeting in a hotel setting, we needed to change our cookie project just a bit. Please place 3 or 4 cookies into a snack size bag; these cookie treats will then be added to our 'Welcome Bags' passed out to everyone when they arrive and check-in at the Registration Table.

Please contact Lisa at the Conference office if you can help with cookies: lisa@michucc.org.  Cookies can be brought to the Registration Table when you arrive.

Let's Move!
Faith and Communities Sign-on

Two years ago the United Church of Christ joined the national movement to help end childhood obesity and to increase awareness among adults about the chronic diseases associated with weight gain (i.e. diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and cancer).

The United Church of Christ, along with other mainline denominations continues to work with the Campaign for Healthy Kids project (CHK) and Faith United to End Childhood Obesity to help First Lady Michelle Obama to expand grassroots participation in the Let's Move Faith initiative to end childhood obesity.

The Let's Move initiative wants to identify and organize over 1,000 faith leaders from a number of diverse faith congregations nationwide to be partners in the Let's Move Faith and Communities movement.

You can help by encouraging your local churches, clergy, pastors and lay leaders to sign on to the Let's Move! Faith and Communities website.

When you sign on be sure to list "United Church of Christ" as the denomination. Also, please put "Faith United To End Childhood Obesity" in the comments section. Will you please take 5 minutes and sign on now?

Signing makes you an official partner in a growing movement that believes that any differences that exist among us, pale in comparison to our common commitment and mission to protect the health of children.

Please take a moment to check out the
In it you will find creative ways to address the childhood obesity issue in your congregation and community, including how to establish health councils and implement the five pillars of Let's Move!

Prophetic Integrity MAT
UPDATE:
When your Prophetic Integrity MAT met this month we had lots of information from our survey. We thank all of you who filled out the forms and returned them as well as those of you who talked with us on the phone. It is interesting to note that our research matched Campbell's conclusion in his recent editorial that poverty is a key issue in Michigan UCC churches. At this point the second most requested topic is jobs & economy, and the third education. As we continue to collect and collate the data we are beginning to plan how to move forward with what we have found. We want to offer programs and workshops which meet your needs and support your ministries.

We also followed the steps required to present two resolutions at Annual Meeting in Oct. One is focused on energy conservation and the good of the environment, the other on equal voice for younger members of churches. The details are being worked out and more information will be presented in your annual meeting packets.

We moved forward in the conference commitment to offer anti-racism training. Decisions need to be made about where we are and therefore what we need in this regard.  Preliminary research indicates that there are many options already available in the cities across the state. We will make a list of those resources to present in tandem with our plans for offering meaningful training.

We decided to join Defend Michigan Democracy, a statewide initiative to maintain majority rule in our state legislature. Under this proposal certain proposed legislation would require a 2/3 majority to pass. In essence this means that one third minority can control the outcome.

For more information see: www.defendmichigandemocracy.com

Rev. Tom Jones made a presentation about an immigration panel to be offered first in a central location but hopefully in several areas throughout the conference. We endorsed the ministry and will await next steps once the pilot has been launched.

Finally, we discussed an article, "Six Reasons Why We Need Progressive Religion." The members of the team agreed that it was helpful in understanding our role on this team to speak prophetically in our society on behalf of the church. We are glad to be called to do this work and invite any of you who are interested to join us.

Clergy Peer Groups
in the Michigan Conference

Fall is fast approaching which means it is time to form SING (Spiritual Insight, Nurture and Growth) Groups. Last year we had several groups of clergy gather monthly for two hours in various locations around the conference to offer each other support in ministry as well as a focused time for discernment prayer.

This year we are adding new options. Please look at the information flyer for more information.

The purpose of these groups is to provide a safe outlet to share the ups and downs of ministry and receive peer guidance and support.

If you are interested in being part of a group, email Deborah Kohler, Acting Associate Conference Minister, at deborah@michucc.org.  Please include your church or ministry setting and location, the Association in which you have your standing, what kind of group your're interested in and any questions you have about peer groups. After Labor Day the input will be collated and groups will be scheduled to begin by late September or early October.
