Words from Conference Minister
Rev. Dr. Campbell Lovett
'If I speak in the tongues of mortals and of angels but do not have love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal."
My first week as your Conference Minister was an interesting one. Three days in, I found myself on the Statehouse lawn standing in support of women's reproductive rights and a state legislator's First Amendment rights.
At issue was whether the word "vagina" could be spoken from the floor of the state House during debate. At stake was whether female legislators would be denied their voice to speak the truth in the House chamber, and women in Michigan would be denied control of their reproductive rights. Apparently, some find this word to be embarrassing or unseemly and are concerned about younger ears listening to debate from the gallery. I found this perplexing, mainly because it is usually the church that can be prudish in such matters and state politics where anything goes.
The church has some history with this. For a long, long time, the church has used another "V" word: Virgin. The church concerned itself with whether or not Mary had marital relations before giving birth to Jesus, or whether the Holy Child was truly from God's Spirit. The Apostles' Creed put this debate to rest for earlier generations by declaring that Jesus was "conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary."
I must confess, however, that as an adolescent - when I reasoned like a child - it was sometimes embarrassing to hear that "V" word in church. But, now that I have become an adult, I love to know that God is involved in - and blessing - even the most intimate aspects of our lives. Thus, I appreciate the Prayer of Baptism in the UCC Book of Worship that depicts the rich symbolism of water proclaiming, in part, that Jesus "was nourished in the water of Mary's womb."
As we get immersed by the wave of the current culture war, it is important to remember what we bring to the conversation. That is love. An early church apologist, Tertullian, wrote about how non-Christians viewed Christians: "Look how they love one another." Our distinctive characteristic is love. We love our fellow Christians, we love God and neighbor, and Paul encourages us to speak the truth in love.
In addition to our love, the United Church of Christ also claims a long commitment to women's rights in general and women's reproductive rights specifically. Hopefully, our distinctive love, and our commitment to justice for women, will guide our shared ministries and help us to be the loving, truth-speaking, justice-seeking people that God calls us to be.
Stillspeaking God, help us to listen to your voice and the voices of those calling us to greater truths. Empower us then to speak on behalf of the voiceless and with those in any need. Amen. |

MICHIGAN: 1
WE'RE ALL SET TO GET ON THE BUS! Thanks to the 25 individuals, 14 churches and 5 Associations we have raised over $7000 to send 52 teens and 20 adults to the National Youth Event. The gifts from the Associations turned into a competition with Eastern stepping forward first to contribute $1111.13! In the spirit of Connecting Our Blessings we stepped out in faith to support our youth. Thank you for rising to the challenge. As the teens and their chaperones gather on Monday, July 9th to connect their blessings by getting to know each other, begin making their Michigan Conference UCC banner, and then actually get on the bus and into their cars to caravan to NYE the next day, we will all be with them. Watch the Michigan Conference UCC Facebook page (click on the icon to friend us!) for pictures and updates. We are proud to be teaching our youth about our Still Speaking God as we live into that spirit by investing in NYE. Thank you!

Michigan Conference Website
Under Construction
Our Michigan Conference UCC website recently fell victim to someone with ties to an online pharmaceutical company. Our
web address was hacked to show their medications for sale directly underneath our listing in Google Search.
Our webmaster tried to remove and repair the damage but was unable to. A NEW website was created (behind the scenes) and is now in place. Several areas of the website are still 'Under Construction' - the work that it takes to re-create all of the graphics and information is massive. (On top of all of this extra work our webmaster was already in the process of moving his family to Africa!)
We ask for your patience as the 'kinks' are worked out; if you try and visit a certain page and nothing happens or you are re-directed to the HOME page - it is probably safe to assume that work is currently being done in that area.
If you need assistance please contact the Conference office and someone will be happy to help.
Thank You!

Your Prophetic Integrity MAT At Work
Even as the PI MAT has spent the last few meetings centering on our mission to focus on Social Justice knowing that the churches do a great job at Social Services, two situations have arisen in Lansing to which we have been in a position to respond. |
Mission Partnership Project:
"Teaching/Training Teachers of the Faith"
For years now, our UCC-Philippine Mission Partners in Central Philippines have been saying to visitiors from our Michigan Conference: "We wish we could help our congregations work more effectively with children and their families." Hence a vision was born: identify a gifted elementary school teacher and enable that person to earn a Masters Degree in Early Childhood Education. That person, once trained, would then lead Christian Education workshops, conference, and training events for church leaders and teachers in local churches in the Visayas jurisdictions of the UCCP. Those trained would then work more creatively and intentionally with children and families in their congregations.
A scholar has finally been agreed upon: Mrs. Elma M. Quiliope (kil-you-pay), chosen by the UCCP leadership, begins two years of classes in June 2012 at St. Paul University, in Dumaguete City. Mrs. Quiliope, 39, is an elementary public school teacher and holds a Bachelor Degree in Early Childhood Elementary Education from Silliman University, a UCC-Philippines-related institution. She is the mother of three children. Her husband, Pablito, is Pastor of the Amlan UCCP Church on the island of Negros.
Mrs. Quiliope writes, "I commit myself to the teaching ministry of the Church, particularly in the area of early childhood education. If given this scholarship for masteral studies, I pledge to fulfill all the requirements that are expected of me. I will then offer my services to churches in need of assistance and training regarding early childhood education."
