Greetings!
Easter Greetings!
This month we invite you to join SSNDs around the world in taking time to reflect on the goal of education for all. Where are the signs of progress? What areas need our particular attention right now?
On April 11 we commemorate the 50th anniversary of Pacem in Terris. We encourage you to take some time this month to reread this important document and reflect on its meaning for us today. In the U.S. we celebrate Earth Day on April 22. What things will you do this month to act in solidarity with all creation? Looking for some ideas? Our newsletter offers nearly a dozen information and action items for your reflection and consideration.
Thank you for your on-going commitment to promoting justice, peace, and the integrity of creation.

Behind the Brands
Oxfam's GROW campaign has kicked off a new initiative, Behind the Brands, which ranks the policies of the world's ten largest food and beverage companies on key social and environmental factors like equality for women, treatment of farmers, land, clean water, sustainability, and climate change. For the first time consumers can learn about the supply chain policies and practices employed by the companies behind products like M&Ms, Crunch, Oreos, and others.
With this new information we can more effectively advocate that the products we enjoy be made in a socially and environmentally responsible manner. Learn more, take action.

61 Million Children are Not in Primary School - Global Action Week 2013

During this year's Global Action Week (April 21-27) the Global Campaign for Education will focus its efforts to ensure that every child has a well-trained and well-supported teacher. It is estimated that we need 1.7 million more teachers - 1 million more in Africa alone. If governments and donors make concerted efforts to meet the promises they made in 2000, basic education for all could be achieved by 2015, according to new analysis by the Education for All Global Monitoring Report team. Update on Immigration
We are entering a critical time for immigration reform. It is believed that the Senate Gang of 8 plans to introduce legislation around April 10. However, comprehensive immigration reform will not happen unless the voices in favor of justice for immigrants are heard above the voices for exclusion, deportation, and punishment. If you are in the Central Pacific Province, please consider joining/forming a local immigration group. Let us unite our voices in a persistent message that now is the time for comprehensive immigration reform.

Impacts of Sequestration
On March 1 across-the-board federal budget cuts began to take effect, threatening many programs and services designed to help the poor and vulnerable, including education, Head Start, WIC, meals for seniors, housing assistance, unemployment insurance, and much more. Advocates call for cancelling sequestration and replacing it with a balanced package of tax and spending measures that do not increase poverty (or inequality) or exert such an immediate drag on the economy. Wealth Inequality in America (CNNMoney)
Think you know how wealth is distributed in America? Think again. This YouTube video shows that our perceptions of who has money and how much they have is quite skewed. The poor and middle class have a lot less than most people think, while the rich have a lot more. And the Top 1% are off the charts.
| | Wealth Inequality in America |
The video, which has been viewed more than 5 million times, draws heavily on the wealth inequality work of professors at the Harvard and Duke business schools.

Tax Day
According to Merriam-Webster, a tax is a charge imposed for public purposes. Too many people focus only on two words of that definition - charge imposed. Then the tax is seen as an imposition, as a negative. And, in some cases, it probably is. But the tax is for public purposes. It pays for police and firemen, for snow plows and postal workers, for roads and bridges, for public education, for health services, for public transportation, for parks and recreation centers among other things. If one can see taxes as an investment in those services, an investment in the health and vitality of one's community, perhaps the change in focus can lessen the negative perception. But this day should also remind us of our duty as citizens to be more mindful of how our investment is being used and abused. 'No taxation without representation' is a slogan for today as much as it was for the early colonists.

Earth Day and International Concerns about Wildlife
The significance of Earth Day extends to the entire planet and the whole range of life-forms, each a manifestation of the divine. Although our awareness and action may focus on the local and national, we are also called to expand our circle of concern and compassion to the wider community of life.
This month we invite you to take some time to learn more about ways the international community is addressing concerns about wildlife extinction, the challenge of securing protection for polar bears (and what you can do to help), the encouraging news about Thailand ending their trade of ivory, the outcomes from the Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species, and steps you can take to avoid participating in the wildlife trade. Learn more/take action(s).

U.S. Action for Earth
We know all too well that protecting this beautiful blue planet requires constant vigilance. In anticipation of Earth Day we invite you to explore ways you can respond to the call to act in solidarity with all creation. To assist you, we have assembled a variety of opportunities for your consideration - take steps to preserve the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, sign a petition to keep Shell from drilling in the Arctic, urge support for Carbon Tax legislation, voice your opposition to the Keystone XL Pipeline, and support protection for the Izembek National Wildlife Refuge. Learn more/take action(s).

Sequester Guts Funding for Wild Places
No one wants to see a CLOSED sign on our national parks or a barred entrance to our national forests, but the massive 10-year budget cuts (sequestration) will gut funding for national parks, forests, wildlife refuges, and other wild places that make America beautiful. These cuts are closing visitor centers and campgrounds, furloughing park rangers, and limiting access to hunting and fishing. If these cuts aren't reversed, entire parks, refuges, and forests could be closed completely. Learn more/take action.

International Mine Awareness Day - April 4
Eliminating the threat of mines and explosive remnants of war is a crucially important endeavor that advances peace, enables development, supports nations in transition, and saves lives. Mine action
is not just about landmines. Unexploded ordnances such as bombs, mortars, and grenades that fail to detonate on impact (often from cluster bombs) remain volatile and can kill if touched.
On this 14th anniversary of the Mine Ban Treaty, let us all reaffirm our commitment to a world free from the threat of mines and other remnants of war. Learn more, take action.

Pacem in Terris - Pope John XXIII
April 11, 1963
"Finally, may Christ inflame the desires of all men to break through the barriers which divide them, to strengthen the bonds of mutual love, to learn to understand one another and to pardon those who have done them wrong. Through His power and inspiration may all peoples welcome each other to their hearts as brothers, and may the peace they long for ever flower and ever reign among them."
This month we commemorate the 50th anniversary of Pacem in Terris, the first encyclical addressed not just to the Catholic faithful, but to "all men of good will." Please follow these links for an overview of this historic Catholic Social Teaching document and a reflective prayer service.

Arms Trade Treaty Approved
The U.N. General Assembly has overwhelmingly approved the first U.N. treaty regulating the multibillion-dollar international arms trade. The resolution adopting the landmark treaty was approved by a vote of 154 to 3 with 23 abstentions. The 193-member world body voted after Iran, North Korea, and Syria blocked its adoption by consensus at a negotiating conference last Thursday. The treaty still requires ratification by 50 member states before it can take effect. Learn more.

Global Day of Action on Military Spending - April 15
Worldwide over $1.7 trillion are allocated annually for military expenditures. The U.S. spends more than any other country at over $700 billion annually. Canada ranks 14th spending in excess of $24 billion. The Global Day of Action on Military Spending calls on people all over the world to speak out against the vast waste and destruction caused by military spending.
