LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

harbor skating

Greetings!
This winter message reflects how our 2015 year went and where the Chamber is going for 2016!  During the 2015 year the Chamber was busier than ever with the community at large with new events and initiatives.   In the summer the Chamber sponsored a 'summer soirée' for new members at the Chamber office, reaching out to new partners and welcoming potential ones for a little bit of networking and 'beverages'.  The new event PJ Village organized was their Heritage Weekend.  The Chamber participated by having staff dress in period costumes and extended our hours to accommodate visitors to our historic 1682 Roe House, i.e. the Chamber office.  In July our new event was the Gardens and Landscapes of Port Jefferson tour.  Nine private gardens were shown with many including painters and artwork from the Night Herons, refreshments, and music.

The Chamber has now established the sponsoring of 6 major events throughout the year not to exclude the many minor contributions we are involved with.
We are a full service, year round organization and provide member benefits and community involvement.

The Board of Directors after receiving feedback from our partners has decided to make some changes as to how our General Membership Meetings are run. We look forward to having more opportunities for networking and announcements with less programming. Name badges for Directors at meetings so that they may help serve the general membership more efficiently about concerns and issues. There will be evening meetings in response to allowing for the potential of outreach to the different segments of our membership.

Our installation of the 2016 Board of Directors will be later this year-March instead of February because of a new networking event in February.
This new Board is dynamic and represents the many different facets that makes up our membership; retail, services and professional.

So the Chamber is always a work in progress.  Evaluating our efforts to improve the benefits we offer to our membership!

Happy New Year,
Suzanne Velazquez

Keep your eyes out for the completion of the design stage for the expansion of parking on Main Street. Tentative construction will start in the fall of 2016.

Skating on the harbor continues at The Rinx for the winter season down at the Port Jefferson Village Center.  Call 631-403-4357 or visit their website for all skating times and info.  www.therinx.com

SANTA PARADE & WORKSHOP

This year the parade met with some light rain...it happens, but it didn't seem to hamper the parades spirits!  With umbrellas in hand the participants carried on marching down Main Street. The LI Street Rods were sadly missed because of the rain, but all our 'regulars' came out to play.  Santa this year came via the Port Jefferson Ferry float because our usual horse and carriage arrangement had a 'hiccup'.  Thanks to quick thinking, the ferry float ended up as a great vehicle to carry Santa and all of his helpers!

Starting at our new time now, 3:00 pm, the parade finished at Santa's Workshop.  As expected there was a huge line of children waiting to see him and the workshop.  As dusk approached the lights of the Village glowed adding a special touch welcoming all the holiday visitors.  Recognition and thanks to Tad Cox who plays Santa and to Pat Darling and her elves that create the exceptional venue for the workshop.  It is through their efforts and the partnering with the Chamber that makes this holiday tradition so successful.

HOLIDAY BREAKFAST

With 42 attendees the Chamber's holiday breakfast was GREAT!  This year our host was new Chamber Partner Brewology 296 located on the corner of Arden and Main Street in Port Jefferson. The holiday buffet consisted of : scrambled eggs, bourbon glazed French toast , bacon, breakfast sausage, mini-quiches, family style fruit, Danish, cheese & cracker with beer jam, and assorted meats-pates, sausage, salami platters, WOW what a spread! If that was not enough the owners made us a special holiday signature cocktail to kick off the festivities: cranberry juice, simple syrup, grapefruit beer, & champagne.

Again Chamber Partner Port Jefferson Music Academy performed.  The owner Sophie Arbuckle and her daughter played violin duets of holiday background music.

With a minimal business agenda the atmosphere was festive and warm creating a wonderful intro to the holiday season.

HOUSE TOUR

This year's tour was completely revamped!  After so many years having the historic walking house tour in the downtown area of Port Jefferson and being connected with the Charles Dickens Festival, it was changed.  The tour was one week after Dickens and NOT in lower Port, but rather in the geographic area of  Harbor Hills in Port Jefferson.  Four large scale, grand homes greeted the attendees, all decked out for the holiday season.  As done last year the new feature of the 'seasonal gathering' cocktail party was offered before the self-guided tour and held at Lombardi's on the Sound at the Port Jefferson Country Club, which was logistically right in the middle of the 'Homes of Harbor Hills Lantern Light House Tour'.  To add even more value to the ticket our Chamber Partner Danfords on the Sound, made the offer, ''buy one lunch & get the second one free'.  This deal was printed on all the house tour tickets!  As added benefits to the tour, participants enjoyed musical performances at the homes and Dickens characters entertaining the guests.  Tickets for the first time could be purchased on the website Eventbrite, which accommodated those individuals that like 24 hour convenient service!
