LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Greetings!

The Chamber seems to flow into the fall season with great liveliness for all the events we are involved with!  Starting September 20th with our new 'Dragon Boat Race Festival', which was the first of its kind in Suffolk County. It drew a record amount of attendees at the Villages Harborfront park. The event was terrifically successful and will continue as an annual festival.  From there our 'A Taste of Port Jefferson' an eating and drinking extravaganza, at the PJ Village Center, had 200 paid ticket holders, not to mention all the vendors and their staff.  Melissa Petsco the Chair and volunteers did a great job.  An added feature creating some new energy was a contest for vendors who were judged by a special VIP committee.

The following day was the Village's Harvest Festival and the Chamber sponsored the annual 'Scarecrow Walk' on East Main Street.  Twenty scare-crows were put up by different groups and businesses.  This year, an award was given to the most creative and Brownie Troop 637 of Miller Place were the proud recipients.

These activities move the Chamber into December's events with our annual Santa Parade November 29th and the 19th Annual Charles Dickens Festival, Lanternlight House Tour.  This year's parade will start later at 3:00 pm to help our business community and to show off Santa's Workshop' in the amber light of dusk.

Hoping you all have a prosperous holiday season filled with family, friends, health and good cheer.

Compliments of the Season,
Suzanne Velazquez
Greater Port Jefferson Chamber of Commerce, President

CHAMBER CHATTER

Congratulations to Chamber Partner Eric Cherches positon as head of Belle Terre Village Court.

Our scarecrow walk on East Main during the Villages Harvest Festival had 20 some odd participants!  Our most creative scare crow was won by Brownie Troop 637 of Miller Place, Troop Leader Jennifer DeRosa.  Their 'Princess Crow' was adorned with a magic wand, tiara, and 'glam'.  With her pastel colors and blond hair, she waits for Prince Charming!  The Brownie Troop was awarded a craft project for the entire troop!  Honorable mentions go to 'Captain Book' created by the Port Jefferson Library and 'Cowboy' crow with his boots intact created by the Amazing Olive.  Great fun and thanks to all!!

And be prepared to see the more daffodils in bloom for spring 2015 in front of the Chamber!  Thanks to the fairy bulb planter.

DRAGON BOAT RACE FESTIVAL

Dragons!
Dragons Roar into Port Jefferson September 20th for a Dragon Boat Race Festival, the first of its kind in Suffolk County!  This new event for our Chamber was very well received with a guesstimate of 5,000 attendees.  The weather was perfect and 16 racing teams competed from the Long Island region.  Asian food vendors had long cuing lines for their delicious delicacies and Asian entertainment was continuous.

Special activities including painting 'dragon eggs' and origami which was a delight for the children.  Cultural vendors were also present to add to the day's festivities.

Winning the gold medal for first place was our own Stony Brook University team!  Mark your calendars now for September 19, 2015 for a sure repeat of this now very popular event.

Many thanks to our volunteer committee and all who participated in making this new festival so successful.

TASTE OF PORT JEFFERSON

Our 7th Annual Taste of Port Jefferson once again showed off the culinary cuisines represented by our restaurant community!  The sun came out after a few days of dreary weather and food enthusiasts came out to get their wide selection of food samplings.  In addition to the large array of varieties of wine and beer, attendees were able to feast on desserts of all kinds.

This year there was a contest for all vendors to show off their products.
Three different categories: best table display, best food/drink presentation and best 'signature' dish. A VIP committee of 6 judges helped to decide the winners.  The winners this year were Oldfields for best table, 5th Season for best signature and Danfords for best food/drink presentation.

Thanks to Costco attendees who bought tickets through Eventbrite on the Taste's website received a glossy full color cookbook, just another added new feature for this year.

Committee Chair Melissa Petsco once again organized a successful event.  The PJ Village Center lends itself as a perfect venue, with its view of our beautiful deep water harbor.  Congratulations to Melissa and our volunteers who helped make this a smooth running event.

2014 ANNUAL VICTORIAN WALKING LANTERN LIGHT HOUSE TOUR

This is the 19th year for the Charles Dickens Festival and house tour. Once again that the Greater Port Jefferson Chamber of Commerce sponsors this popular event. In keeping with the tradition with this walking tour, all the homes have been built in the 1800's and have historical significance.

The tour will concentrate on the east side of Main Street at the south end of Port Jefferson Village. All the homes in the tour have never been before. This is a real accomplishment because of the many years the house tour has been in existence, encouraging and getting news homes is challenging.

Our homeowners have painstakingly preserved original moldings and have kept the historic integrity of their homes creating a sense of the past.

A new feature this year will be an opportunity for ticket holders to choose just the walking tour for the ticketed cost of $25 or for $45, they will be entitled to attend a 'Seasonal Cheer Gathering' at the new restaurant Old Fields. Those ticket holders are welcomed to join in on a pre-house tour get-together for an hour of libations and savories, 3:30-4:30pm. Passed hors d'oeauvres, wines and craft beers will be served in the cozy atmosphere of the Peter Tunney Room. Limited amount of tickets are available for sale, all tickets on sale 2nd week in November.

As always, this very walkable house tour starts at 4:30 and ends at 8:30pm. Village roads will be closed for easy accessibility, so ticket holders can walk freely to all the homes.  There will be a shuttle to transport those attendees who may need a break from walking. Tickets are non-refundable and payment can be with all major credit cards, checks, or cash. Tickets may be purchased at the Chamber office at 118 West Broadway between the hours of 10-5:00 pm during the week and 11-4:00 pm on the weekends. Phone orders are welcomed. For additional information please call 631-473-1414.

SANTA PARADE

Saturday, November 29th is the Chamber's annual Santa Parade.

This year the parade starts at 3:00 pm at the Long Island Railroad Train Station. It goes down Main Street, around East Main Street, to West Broadway and finishes at the 'Drown-Meadow Cottage' on the corner of Barnum and West Broadway.  Where Santa will be there in 'Santa's Workshop' for photo opportunities.

Ride with Santa Contest is open to PJ elementary school children, grades kindergarten to 5th.  Students may draw a colorful picture of a Santa Helper with magic markers, pencils or paints, paper size 8x11.
Picture must be submitted by November 21st either dropped off at the Chamber or mailed or emailed: info@portjeffchamber.com

Two winners one boy and one girl will be recognized and be the first for a photo op with Santa as well as a ride with Santa!
