It's been a wonderful year at HSMSE. Thanks to all of the teachers, administrators, and staff who teach and care for our kids with such commitment, intelligence, and kindness. Thanks to all of the parents who have shared their time and expertise to support this school. Special thanks to graduating PTA officers Jane Marlowe, Jeri Krassner, Ellen Hawa, and Leslie Wolf-Creutzfeldt, who have worked to make HSMSE an even better place for all of our kids. Thanks to continuing PTA executive board members Chris Whitford, Monica Carson, and Lesley Palmer, and to newly elected board members Deborah Pastor, Sloane Harris, Beth Lieberman, and Stefan Cornelis.
Thanks to everyone who has contributed to the newsletter this year. I'm grateful to teachers, students, and parents who have shared their time, their adventures, and their photographs.
Finally, thanks to the students of HSMSE. The school website describes you as smart, curious, and hard-working, and also as "the nicest teenagers you will ever meet." You're the reason all of the teachers, administrators, staff, and parents do what we do, and you make our efforts worthwhile.

HSMSE's Tenth Anniversary Celebration
On June 5, we celebrated the tenth anniversary of HSMSE with a reception and dinner. We heard from some of HSMSE's founding members, celebrated the school's growth and accomplishments, and announced the formation of the new HSMSE Alumni Association. Alumni and alumni families traveled from as far away as Atlanta to mark the occasion, and the school received a special citation from our city councilman.
Many distinguished speakers celebrated HSMSE's accomplishments. Harold O. Levy, Chancellor of the New York City Department of Education from 2000-2002, praised HSMSE's smart students who really care, its dedicated faculty, and its series of principals with vision. He closed by saying, "You guys are the cutting edge, and it's impressive as hell." Dennis Walcott, current Chancellor of the New York City Department of Education, cited HSMSE as an example of the vision of new specialized schools, and praised Ms. Bonds and her predecessors as educators of vision. He noted that HSMSE students are not only the leaders of tomorrow, but are already leaders today. Randy Asher, HSMSE's founding principal, talked about HSMSE as "heaven" and said that leaving was one of the hardest decisions he'd ever had to make.
William Dugan, HSMSE's second principal, recognized the founding faculty still teaching at HSMSE: Ernesto Pedroso, Andrew Podell, Stuart Hershow, Jen Boylan, Katherine (Donnelly) Billotti, and Peter Pellegrino. Stuart Hershow spoke on behalf of HSMSE's founding faculty, expressing the faculty's love for their students and colleagues and their joy at watching the students learn and grow. Ben Lipton, valedictorian of the class of 2008, celebrated HSMSE as "all grown up now," and talked about how HSMSE prepared him and his classmates for college and life. He praised HSMSE for teaching students how to do a lot of work in a short time, how to speak in public, and how to write, noting that he really appreciated HSMSE's impressive humanities departments. "More than anything else," he said, "HSMSE gives you an appreciation for diversity--of personalities, interests, backgrounds, and points of view."
Alexander Kiladze, a member of the class of 2013, performed Chopin's Étude Op. 25, No. 11 , in A minor. Special recognitions were presented by Steve Roseman, HSMSE assistant principal for operations, and the founding board of the new HSMSE Alumni Association was introduced. (To join the alumni association, contact Jen Boylan at jboylan@hsmse.org.) Ms. Bonds closed the ceremonies, expressing her pride at being the principal of HSMSE. Following the formal program, alumni, faculty, and parents lingered to catch up and celebrate together. Congratulations to HSMSE on a wonderful first decade!

Congratulations Graduates!
On Friday morning, June 21, in a Great Hall decked with flowers and banners, and surrounded by beaming families, friends, and teachers, the class of 2013 joined the ranks of HSMSE alumni. Professor Vishaan Chakrabarti, Marc Holliday Associate Professor of Real Estate Development and the Director of the Center for Urban Real Estate at the Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning & Preservation delivered an inspiring keynote address, encouraging the graduates to welcome the unexpected directions in which life will take them. The graduates were also warmly congratulated by Ms. Bonds, both individually and as a group.
Good luck to all of the graduates as you move on to your next adventures. Please stay in touch!

Sports News
Dragons Fly Both Fast and Long: A Running Team Update
An enthusiastic group of 37 students enjoyed the Track running club workouts this spring and completed three Invitational track meets. This was a developmental year for them, but the feedback was positive enough that Coach Tom Henning has decided to apply for a full-fledged Track & Field team that would compete with schools across the city next spring. Principal Bonds has made the application to the league and the team now awaits the decision due in late June.

The coach is already thinking of the crunch of autumn leaves underfoot, as he has already been recruiting runners for the fall Cross-Country team- The Flying Dragons. With practices starting in late August, three weeks before school starts, and the first races in mid-September, he actually had to start recruiting in May. After a spring torrent of meetings, forms, paperwork, and tryouts (one mile in eight minutes) he has assembled a solid team for the fall: 8 seasoned seniors, 9 talented juniors, 18 striving sophomores, and perhaps a dozen eager freshman yet to be recruited.
The team has a new website at http://www.flyingdragons1.blogspot.com. Here, parents can view a team calendar and other information including details about the annual Team Picnic and (new this year) a Parent's Hike which will give the Flying Dragons' biggest fans the chance to walk the wooded Van Cortlandt Park race course that their children know so well. Coach Henning is still recruiting incoming freshman girls and boys. Anyone interested should contact him directly at thenning@hsmse.org. Lastly, Coach Henning would like to recognize the team's three graduating seniors. They are Marcelo Bravo (4 years), Zainab Oketokuon (3 years), and Henry Landis (2 years). "They helped build the Flying Dragons into what it is today," the coach said.
--Coach Tom Henning
