February Outdoor Almanac |
Colorful icicles drip down the rock cliffs at Gorge Metro Park, creating a stunning "Crystal Palace." Chickadees can be hand-fed at the Nature Realm. Late in the month, skunk cabbage, our earliest spring wildflower, blooms near streams and wetlands. Temperatures inside the buds heat up to 70 degrees, which melts any snow surrounding the plant.

Featured Trail: Towpath Trail |
The concept of restoring the towpath for use as a multipurpose trail began to emerge in the 1980s, and the first section of the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail opened in 1993. There are now 41 miles of this multipurpose trail in Summit County. Metro Parks manages half of that distance, from the southern boundary of Cuyahoga Valley National Park to the Stark County line, except about three miles in downtown Akron.
