January Outdoor Almanac |
Groundhogs are true hibernators and can sleep for five months. Skunks go into a state of torpor, or inactivity, and often invite themselves into groundhog borrows. Temporarily "frozen" wood frogs are burrowed under leaf litter and survive by utilizing anti-freezing chemicals in their bodies. In a few months, they will thaw out and restart their hearts and lungs.
