Below is the first in a series of newsletters about Elk Grove's plan to implement the new Common Core State Standards (CCSS). You may have heard a bit about them already, but as these updates come out, I encourage you to read them carefully so you can fully understand the changes that are headed our way.

The first sign of the CCSS has been in the adoption of our new GO MATH program in grades K-2. We are also currently piloting in grade 3. 

Our 3rd - 6th Grade teachers are learning about the CCSS in English/Language Arts.   Our school focus this year is in writing, but you will begin to see more evidence of the CCSS in the months to come in reading instruction as well.

The changes are exciting, but will entail many changes in what you see from your child's work.  We will keep you posted on what is to come as well as schedule some parent nights to help you better understand how the Common Core will impact your child's education.  We view all of these changes as positive and look forward to the great new learning coming our way.  If you want to learn more now, log on the the EGUSD website and join the CCSS blog.

EGUSD Teachers Challenge Students with Common Core State Standards

The 39 elementary schools in the Elk Grove Unified School District are challenging students with the new Common Core State Standards (CCSS)! The standards define the concepts and skills that every child will learn. As the CCSS are gradually implemented throughout the country, students will be better prepared than ever before to demonstrate the skills and understanding needed for college and the workplace.

While testing on the Common Core is almost three years away, Elk Grove teachers have wasted no time in guiding their students into the transition to the new standards. This year, kindergarten through 2nd grade students are learning using the Common Core math standards.   Students in grades three through six are transitioning to Common Core in English/Language Arts. Teachers have trained over the summer and into the fall in order to be prepared to assist students with the new challenges.

How do the Common Core Standards challenge students? In mathematics, students from very early ages are taught to reason like a mathematician and to problem-solve in ways that are both practical and consider multiple pathways to solutions.

As a first grade example, as students in the past were asked to learn 8 + 6, they first counted on their fingers and then memorized the math fact.   Now, they will still learn the math fact, but first they will also learn to think of a variety of ways to solve the problem. They learn to "decompose" numbers in order to make the numbers make sense in the problem. "Six" can be thought of in more than one way. It could be one group of six, but it is also 1+1+1+1+1+1 as well as four and two more. For a child who understands how numbers work at this deep level, "8+6" can be expressed as:

            8 + 6               then        (8 + 2) + 4 = 14

They combine the eight with the two to group a ten. "10+4" seems easier than "8+6."   By learning that they can take numbers apart and recombine them in new ways, children become flexible and efficient mathematical thinkers.

Common Core Standards help students to become thinkers and problem-solvers rather than merely memorizers.   Excitement over CCSS continues to grow in EGUSD. In the coming year, Common Core will be coming to students in additional grade levels and in additional subjects.

Los maestros del Distrito Escolar Unificado de Elk Grove  Desafían a los Estudiantes con las Normas Comunes e Importantes del Estado

¡Las 39 escuelas primarias del Distrito Escolar Unificado de Elk Grove (EGUSD) están desafiando a los estudiantes con las Nuevas Normas Comunes e Importantes del Estado (CCSS)! Las normas definen los conceptos y habilidades que cada niño aprenderá. Mientras las CCSS son implementadas gradualmente a través de la nación, los estudiantes serán preparados mucho mejor que antes para que ellos demuestren las habilidades necesarias de comprensión para el colegio y el lugar de trabajo.

Aunque los exámenes de las Normas Comunes son en tres años, los maestros de Elk Grove no han perdido tiempo en guiar a sus estudiantes con la transición de las nuevas normas. Este año, los estudiantes del kínder al 2º grado están aprendiendo usando las Normas Comunes de matemáticas. Los estudiantes de grado tercero al sexto han estado haciendo la transición de las Normas Comunes en Artes del Lenguaje Inglés. Los maestros han sido entrenados durante el verano y el otoño para estar capacitados en asistir a los estudiantes con los nuevos desafíos.

¿Cómo las Normas Comunes e Importantes desafían a los estudiantes? En matemáticas, los estudiantes desde la edad temprana son enseñados en razonar como matemáticos y a resolver los problemas de maneras prácticas considerando los caminos múltiples solucionando los problemas.  

Un ejemplo del primer grado, como era en el pasado; se le pedía al estudiante en aprender 8 + 6: ellos contaban primero con sus dedos y después memorizaban la tabla de matemáticas. Ahora, los estudiantes aprenden todavía la tabla de matemáticas, pero ellos deben pensar primero en varias posibles soluciones para resolver el problema. Ellos aprenden en "separar" los números para que ellos puedan tener el sentido de cómo resolver el problema. "Seis" puede ser compuesto de varios números; puede ser un grupo de seis, pero también puede ser una suma de 1+1+1+1+1+1, además de ser la computación de cuatro y dos. Para que un niño entienda como los números pueden trabajar en un nivel más profundo, "8+6" puede ser expresado como:

       (2+4)  

8 + 6          then    (8+2) + 4 = 14

Ellos combinan el ocho con el dos para hacer el grupo de diez. "10+4" se ve más fácil que "8+6." Los niños aprenden que ellos pueden separar los números; ellos pueden combinarlos de muchas maneras nuevas y ellos pueden llegar a ser más flexibles y eficientes pensadores en matemáticas.

La Nuevas Normas Comunes ayudan a los estudiantes en ser pensadores que resuelven los problemas en lugar de memorizar las tablas de matemáticas. Entusiasmo sobre las CCSS sigue creciendo en el EGUSD. El próximo año las Normas Comunes serán enseñadas además de otras materias a los estudiantes de grados más altos.
