"THIS THING IS GOING TO EXPLODE..." - Victor John (1994)

Earlier this year, Victor John and I had a chance to meet up with some of his old friends who had visited India in the very beginning of the movement.  In fact, these friends were at the very first Bhojpuri leader's conference held in 1994 with just a small group of men and women.  As Victor and his friends reflected on that very first conference, one of them reminded Victor about what he said as they looked over the small crowd of faithful men and women as they worshipped.

"This thing is going to explode!"

In 1994, could Victor predict how the Spirit of God would begin moving?  No.  But God had given him a vision.  God had given him a strategy (Luke 10).  And God had given him relationships with key leaders that shared his vision for reaching the Bhojpuri people, and who were willing to obey the call.

Twenty years later, God is still giving the vision, and the direction.  Next month, we will be hosting the 20th annual Bhojpuri Leader's Conference in Varanasi, India. However, rather than a handful of leaders like the 1994 conference, this year's conference will be attended with approximately 10,000 leaders!  What God has done in North India in the past 20 years is nothing short of amazing!

These conferences are a crucial

part of the church planting movement.  Most of the leadership development and training - the fuel and energy for the movement - is decentralized and conducted in remote settings.  Some of these leaders feel isolated.  Some of these leaders feel that they are fighting the fight by themselves.  These annual conferences encourage leaders fro

m remote villages because they know they are part of something bigger than themselves.  They are part of a great movement of the Spirit.   They worship, fellowship, learn, and solidify relationships that hold them accountable. And they return to their villages energized and ready to continue to fight the good fight of the faith (1 Timothy 6:12).

Please pray for the conferences this year.  There are so many obstacles with leaders facing opposition at every turn as they prepare.

We also ask that you would consider making a donation. You can imagine the expenses involved in hosting a conference of this magnitude.  The local leaders sacrifice and give generously to be able to attend the conference, but resources are extremely limited and it will require help from our faithful partners.  A gift of any size can make a huge difference...and 100% of your gift will be given directly towards the conference.

Making Disciples by Shepherding

Feed Your Sheep

The third time he said to him, "Simon son of John, do you love me?" Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, "Do you love me?" He said, "Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you." Jesus said, "Feed my sheep".  John 21:17 (NIV)

When we started this series in January of this year, I introduced the concept of every believer's calling.  As a review let's look at these two passages of scripture:

Matthew 28:18-20.  And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." (NASB)

John 21:15-17.  So when they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon, son of John, do you love Me more than these?" He said to Him, "Yes, Lord; You know that I love You." He said to him, "Tend My lambs." He said to him again a second time, "Simon, son of John, do you love Me?" He said to Him, "Yes, Lord; You know that I love You." He said to him, "Shepherd My sheep. " He said to him the third time, "Simon, son of John, do you love Me?" Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, "Do you love Me?" And he said to Him, "Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You." Jesus said to him, "Tend My sheep." (NASB)

Combining these two passages, every believer is called by Jesus to do the following:

1. As you go, make disciples.

2. How?  Be a shepherd.

This month, we'll try to unpack the concept of "feeding the sheep".  As a shepherd of my fold, what does this mean for me?  What does the Word tell us about this?

  1. Shepherds must feed their sheep steady doses of Jesus.  Jesus is the Word.  He is also the Bread of Life:
  • John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
  • John 6:32-35.  Jesus said to them, "Very truly I tell you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven.  For the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven and gives life to the world."  "Sir," they said, "always give us this bread."  Then Jesus declared, "I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.

As shepherds, how can we put this into practice?
