Too Beautiful to call "Frogmore Stew"
This past week the Beaufort County Association of Realtors held a competition between the Realtors Association, The Town of Port Royal, Beaufort County Council, the Legislative Delegation led by Sen Tom Davis and the City of Beaufort.
The City tied the Realtors but look at what our team created! By the way, I was charged with schmoozing the tasters while our team including David Coleman, Clay Scoggins and ringer Jason Dangerfield made this masterpiece.

Mayor Billy Keyserling to Attend National Summit on Increasing Threat of Coastal Flooding/ Sea Level Rise
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Contact: Billy Keyserling, Mayor, (843) 592-0400, billyk@islc.net
In Beaufort, SC, coastal flooding/sea level rise poses growing threat to businesses, citizens and tourism.
Beaufort, SC (10/22/15) - Mayor Billy Keyserling will join a bipartisan group of more than 30 mayors and local officials to raise awareness that coastal flooding/sea level rise demands more attention from leaders at all levels of government. He is part of a delegation of elected local leaders from coastal states attending the Rising Tides Summit in New Hampshire on October 23-25, to express concern over the rapidly increasing impacts of coastal flooding/sea level rise and ensure that national leaders are more responsive to the issue.
With more than 123 million Americans living in coastal shoreline counties, sea level rise has become a national concern. Coastal flooding is causing increasingly costly impacts on businesses, infrastructure, private property along America's shorelines, and affecting tourism. Here in Beaufort we see the impacts every day with more to come.
"This is a problem we can and need to address. We need to get people's attention so that they will understand the threat of inundation of water and the opportunities to plan to fend it off. In the long run, we will need federal funding to help with this. But the work of a group of citizens over the past six or more works draws a road map to areas of concern that can one day be addressed...

It's Time to Invest the Accommodations Tax Dollars
BK - While the newspaper was not at our city council work session on Tuesday night to report on our meeting, we had an interesting conversation with the committee that recommends how the City Council invests accommodations tax dollars. In the past, most of the money collected from the "bed tax" has been passed onto the City's Designated Marketing Organization (DMO) and organizations that market our city outside of a 50 mile radius as is required by state law. However, the current city budget relies on some of the funds to pay for tourist related city expenses like additional law enforcement in the downtown, the tourism coordinator who oversees carriages companies, a portion of the maintenance of the Spanish Moss Trail, a contribution to renovation of USCB's Center for the Arts which is the only facility of its kind available to the public in Northern Beaufort County. And after seeing the positive results of security cameras in other towns and cities, we asked for $71,000 for security cameras that will be staged in the downtown area. The committee did not recommend funding most of what the city requested though all is allowable under state law. READ MORE HERE

Pave the Way
One of the major challenges of our Redevelopment Commission is attracting more diverse job opportunities to allow those who live here, those who come to study and those who want to stay in our very special hometown. This have for years been a huge challenge to county and municipal leaders in Beaufort County. Aiken has tried to do so and what they are doing is worth looking at, even though we differ because Aiken has an established industrial base which we do not have. BK
Editorial: Pave way to attract, keep younger talent The candidates for Aiken's mayor turned their attention to the community's young people during a forum sponsored by USC Aiken on Wednesday, outlining ways to keep them in the community as they enter the job market. Both Rick Osbon, a Republican, and Lessie Price, a Democrat, talked about connecting the ability to attract younger people, particularly young professionals, with the ability to attract businesses, develop a strong workforce and foster a more durable economy. It's positive that both candidates see this goal as being a positive leap for the city. Having a vision for keeping our resources here should be a concern for the next mayor, as well as the entire City Council and other City officials.
