 Values: Define, Align, and Act

A Leader's Identity:

"An Army of sheep led by a lion is better than

an army of lions led by a sheep."

~ Alexander the Great

One of my favorite quotes.  Companies generally take on the identity of their leader. We have all witnessed outstanding examples of great leadership through our recent depression.

One situation comes to mind:

A $200m company was rushed to bankruptcy court after a midnight meeting and then on to be auctioned. Their leader remained calm and openly communicated to the team, "I do not know who will be our new owner.  I don't know if I will be your leader.  I do know, I will do everything possible to keep you informed with current news.  How this affects you and your families is important to me."  The leader's willingness to communicate openly, in the face of uncertainty, increased the level of respect and trust from his team.  As a testament to the impact, the company lost only one person during this devastating time.

Unfortunately, we can all think of leaders from the dark side, those who lead from a narcissistic, intimidation,or  fear-based philosophy. In our office, we reference them as Mushroom Leaders...those who keep their people locked in the closet, in the dark, and feed them full of manure.

Recruiting Secret:

An effective part of our recruiting strategy is to know who the poor leaders are in the industry. We know it's just a matter of time as to when a company's top talent tires of their Show Up, Shut Up, and Put Up style of management.  Simply put, poor leaders enhance the value of the career opportunities we are presenting.

Great Leaders Attract Great Talent:

  • "How did you get here?"

What are the 3 most significant impactful moments in your career that garnered your success?  Likely, having terrific mentors are the key factors in creating those top 3 impactful moments.  An early mentor who saw something great in you that no one else recognized, this leader inspired confidence allowing you to reach higher within yourself achieving new career milestones.  Still today, mentorship remains one of the top reasons professionals make career moves.

Recruiting Secret:

Instead of selling a career position with a great company, we find ourselves selling a mentorship opportunity with a great leader. The opportunity to be guided and developed by someone with years of proven experience and success that sees hidden undeveloped talents in you and wants to invest in your future, creates a compelling recruiting message.

Investing in your leaders and creating a mentoring culture will yield great results in your recruiting efforts!
