GREETINGS FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

It is hard to believe we only have one more full week of school before graduation next Thursday. This has been an excellent year at TGS for our students because of the stellar work done each day by our dedicated and talented teachers. Please join me in thanking them in your own way during this final week of school for the time, effort, and care they provided our students this year.

These past few weeks are full of fun field trips, traditions, and year end projects. The energy is high as our students travel to local farms, go on outdoor and camping trips, take part in challenge activities, and go on a much anticipated whale watch. Similarly, on campus students present their I-Search projects, are treated to crêpes with Madame Jo, and just today some of us witnessed the fourth grade final video productions and the wonderful third grade play, The Three Coins. We are continually impressed by the creativity of our students and the clear joy in learning that takes place here at TGS.

I hope to see many parents and students at the Strolling of the Heifers parade on Saturday at 9:00. This is a great opportunity to show our school pride as we parade together. Remember to wear your TGS Tee Shirt and please stop by to see me if you need one!

I also hope to see many parents next Tuesday at 3:30 for a community meeting to learn more about our emerging Campus Master Plan and Capital Campaign. There will be a number of Board members there as well, and we are all excited to hear community feedback about these initial ideas and initiatives.

Tracy has been ably assisted this year by Laura Pratt in the first grade. Today was Laura's last day and I want to thank her for her incredible volunteer help this year. I would highly suggest stopping in to see the incredible fairy houses that she and Tracy worked with the first grade on this week. They are truly special.

I look forward to seeing many of you at graduation next Thursday.

STROLLING OF THE HEIFERS JUNE 6

On Saturday, June 6, TGS will participate in the Strolling of the Heifers parade. Mark Bowen has volunteered to drive his tractor and tow our student participants in his trailer. If you are able to come and participate, please email Tammy so we can have a head count. The theme of the parade is "Love your Farmer," and students in the lower grades have made cow masks to wear during the parade. Hannah Richards will have these available to hand out to students at the parade start. If you are interested in taking a lead role in decorating the float, please also reach out to Tammy to let her know. We have had great participation in this fun local event in the past and look forward to a wonderful day.

TRUSTEES
Dear TGS community: As mentioned in recent communications (e.g. Wednesday Notice), the Board of Trustees is interested in further opening up channels of communication with parents, faculty and staff. Therefore, we are establishing an informal "advisory panel" program where folks can meet with a number of board members about once a month. We set a date and meeting last week, but alas, did not have anyone from the community appear at this first meeting. While we plan to resume the meetings starting in September, FYI a number of trustees will be present at the master planning/capital campaign planning meeting on June 9 at 3:30pm. At this meeting and as always, we are more than happy to field any questions about the governance practices of TGS (including our role in master planning and capital improvement oversight).
Thank you,
Peter Eden, Board Chair

ART NEWS

Art Electives Exhibition and Film Screening, Friday, June 5

Art electives at The Grammar School are a wonderful opportunity for seventh and eighth graders to embark on a six-week intensive study of a single medium. Students have extended three-hour class periods, which allow for in-depth inquiry and the opportunity to explore longer projects in an area of new interest, or to further develop a known strength. This year, students are studying black and white 35mm photography at InSight Photography, video production with artist and TGS parent Rachel Portesi, and screen printing with TGS art teacher Hannah Richards. This is an exciting time for our middle schoolers to pursue focused projects that synthesize the concepts of art-making they've studied at TGS with an intensive study of their chosen medium.

The students' work will be on display at the Hooker-Dunham Theater and Gallery from May 22 until June 10, with a public opening with film screening on the evening of June 5, 2015.

FROM THE LIBRARY

All library books are now due.

Thousands of books have been checked out of the library this year, and now it is time for them to be returned. Overdue notices are going out, but sometimes books leave the library without the benefit of being checked out. Please check that all TGS Library books that your child has taken from the library are returned. Help your child look in cubbies, over, under, and on top of beds, and even in your car. Thank you!

Summer reading lists

Each year we prepare suggested summer reading lists for those entering grades 2-8 in fall and one for adults. We love to include titles parents recommend, so if you have read something you would like to suggest, please email me. Books fun, serious, thought and laugh provoking will be included.
Thank you, Ponnie
