GREETINGS FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

I want to thank all of our teachers for their dedication and hard work in putting together such a spectacular Spring Concert last Thursday. Alli, Jared, and Carol led our students through a beautiful evening of music, complete with the outdoor Maypole celebration in perfect weather. Our students demonstrated their talents and poise and we all were proud of these tremendous kids and this great school. I can't wait for the next concert.

On Friday, May 29, TGS alumna Francesca Childs will return to the school with a group of students from MIT and Harvard to teach a lesson on STEM initiatives to our seventh and eighth graders. Francesca is part of Spokes America, a group of students who plan to ride bikes across the USA this summer while hosting "Learning Festivals" at schools along the way to help develop critical STEM education needs in our nation. We are honored to host this group for their first Learning Festival on Friday and look forward to keeping in touch with them on their journey this summer.

Today at All School Meeting we were fortunate to have a presentation by Chelsea Granger and Sophie Wood of the Royal Frog Ballet. Chelsea and Sophie led a series of workshops with students, culminating with a talk and slideshow for the whole school.

Spring is a time to celebrate at TGS. We have many traditions that help send off our eighth graders as they transition to their next schools. Two of those traditions are a photo retrospective on the bulletin board outside Tammy's office and an artwork portfolio in the Richardson Gallery for each eighth grader. I strongly encourage everyone to take a moment to soak up the visual journey represented here of the growth these students have experienced at TGS. We look forward to celebrating these wonderful students as much as possible in these final short weeks. I also hope parents of younger students will consider attending graduation on June 11 as it is an incredible event highlighting all that our students have done and celebrating the promise they hold for success in their future endeavors.

As always, we are taking every opportunity to squeeze in final field trips for the spring. Please keep an eye on the calendar and your teacher's home notes to stay on top of all of the fun activities planned as we close out the year!

I am excited to announce that Apple Gifford will now handle Secondary School Placement for TGS. Secondary School Placement is a very important process for TGS and we are excited for Apple to lead this department. This year TGS hosted over 35 secondary schools on campus, and we will do so again next year as we continue to provide diverse options for our students as they decide where to go for high school.

PUTNEY FOOD SHELF
May is the final month for TGS contributions to The Putney Food Shelf! This month the Preschool will be collecting for the Food Shelf, and we hope to collect a large and diverse supply of non-perishable food and household items to share with our neighbors in the community. The need is great, so please think of picking up a few items next time you are at the store. Collection boxes are outside the Main Office and the Preschool classroom. Please help us to make this a record month! Many thanks.
This summer Jess Sardinas will lead three weeklong sessions of preschool camp featuring plenty of fun, games, and general high adventure. (Think pirates, mermaids, and woodland fairies!) Summer Discovery Camp offers three sessions of classes in studio arts and nature exploration for kids age 6-12.

Mountain Bike Camp also will be held the weeks of July 6-10 July 13-17. The first week is a half-day program for beginners, and the second week is a full-day program for more advanced bikers who want longer, more challenging rides. Please email Jen Robb with questions or to register.

ART NEWS

Art Electives Exhibition and Film Screening, Friday, June 5

Art electives at The Grammar School are a wonderful opportunity for seventh and eighth graders to embark on a six-week intensive study of a single medium. Students have extended three-hour class periods, which allow for in-depth inquiry and the opportunity to explore longer projects in an area of new interest, or to further develop a known strength. This year, students are studying black and white 35mm photography at InSight Photography, video production with artist and TGS parent Rachel Portesi, and screen printing with TGS art teacher Hannah Richards. This is an exciting time for our middle schoolers to pursue focused projects that synthesize the concepts of art-making they've studied at TGS with an intensive study of their chosen medium.

The students' work will be on display at the Hooker-Dunham Theater and Gallery from May 22 until June 10, with a public opening with film screening on the evening of June 5, 2015.
