GREETINGS FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

Welcome back everyone to the very busy month that is May at TGS!

We spent the last two All School Meetings in April doing community buddy activities. A key component of our social curriculum, the TGS buddy program continues to foster connections and relationships across grades through service oriented activities. In addition, Charlie's fifth grade spent this afternoon picking up trash at the recycling center at the Putney Fire Station. These small acts of community service have a large impact on our students' long term dedication to acts of service.

The next three weeks are full of fun and important events and we are all so excited for each one, starting with this Friday's Into The Woods party at GMO! We suggest people buy their tickets in advance for this fun party, and come prepared to eat, dance, and bid with friends! Our incredible parent volunteer crew has been very busy all week preparing Green Mountain Orchards for a more than memorable evening that is not to be missed! There are still some volunteer roles available for any parents or community members who wish to help with set up and clean up of the party. Anyone interested in helping with break down on Saturday should let me know.

Staffing Updates

Liz Jackson has decided to take a year off from TGS to travel the world with her family. They have grand plans to explore new cultures, often by bicycle. We are excited for the Jackson family for this adventure and look forward to welcoming them all back to TGS in 2017. Her wonderful boys will keep in touch with their TGS classes through a travel blog, staying connected to TGS while sharing their discoveries and experiences with us. We are currently seeking an interim Spanish teacher to fill Liz's vacancies and will keep the community posted about that search.

We are excited to welcome Tricia Hurley as the new third grade teacher at TGS. Tricia received her Master's of Education from Antioch University. For the past year she has interned in the 2nd-3rd and 4th-5th grade classrooms at the James Faulkner Elementary School in Stoddard, NH, where she has focused on science and place based education. She also has taught yoga and is trained as a Reikki master teacher. Skilled, energetic, and caring, Tricia will fit right in at TGS and we look forward to all she will add to our school.

TGS has been very fortunate to have two wonderful student interns this year from Antioch. Katherine Frey, TGS '04, and Yazzie Azel have worked in the first and third grade all year and have become enmeshed in the positive experiences of our students. This is their final week at TGS and we want to thank them for their exemplary work this year and wish them luck as they continue their careers as educators.

We are still interviewing candidates for both the Development and Admissions openings and look forward to announcing the results of these searches as soon as possible.

TGS Survey Update

Thank you to all of you who filled out the annual Parent Survey. We are going open the survey for one additional day for anyone who may have not had the chance to fill it out. If you still wish to do this, you can fill it out on Thursday this week.

A small wheelbarrow also is helpful. Make sure you clearly mark your tools so we can return any that may be left behind.

Plans for Summer Discovery camp and the Young Explorers program are well under way. While the youngest campers are busy exploring the woods and crafting with Jess Sardinas, older kids can do everything from mountain biking and other outdoor adventures to studio art and traditional crafts.

First TGS mountain bike ride yesterday

MOUNTAIN BIKING
This activity is designed for students who have strong biking skills and experience riding on trails.

TRAIL RUNNING
This year's spring running activity will build on the program we've run for the past several years. The running part of the activity is always incidental to a more compelling objective, which will vary session by session. Some days we'll stage elaborate games. Other days we'll go on point-to-point expeditions. In every session we'll aim to challenge kids to take risks and make efforts that they wouldn't normally expect to encounter.

Kids will usually finish the afternoon soaking wet and very dirty. Appropriate footwear and clothing are necessary. Dry clothes, and a towel to protect car seats at pick-up time are recommended. Runners should have an end of day snack to eat before running, and plenty of fluid. No whining.

PUTNEY FOOD SHELF
This month kindergarten and fifth grade will be collecting for the Putney Food Shelf. The need is great, so please think of picking up a few items next time you are at the store. Donations should be non-perishable items. Toiletries are also welcome. Collection boxes are outside the Main Office and the kindergarten classroom. Please help us to make this a record month. Many thanks.

TGS SWEATSHIRTS!

Hooded or crewneck sweatshirts are $35, Tshirts are $15, and a student's name on the back is an additional $5. Please email Mary to order, and specify style, size, color, and name choice.
