GREETINGS FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL
We are so pleased to welcome Alex Hrabcheck to the 6th grade as of this Monday. Alex lives in Westminster, VT with his parents Julie and Michael, and we are so glad he is here. Please join me in welcoming them as our newest members of the TGS community.

We have changed the date of our Spring party to Friday, May 1, at Green Mountain Orchards. A save the date notification is forthcoming and we are all excited for this fun annual event.

Our next Head of School Coffee will be on Friday, March 6 at 8:30 in the Library and I hope to see many of you there.

TGS announces that two faculty members will seek new challenges outside of the school next year. Linda Kosiba will be moving on from The Grammar School at the end of this year as she explores new opportunities and adventures. It would be impossible to honor Linda's accomplishments and the impact she has had at TGS during her tenure in the scope of this announcement. We look forward to celebrating Linda and all she has done for this school throughout the remainder of the year and we look forward to giving her the incredible send off she deserves, as she has so positively impacted countless graduates.

Additionally, Charlie Boswell will be taking a leave of absence during the 2015-2016 school year to both spend time with his family and advance his emergency medical experience. Charlie hopes as well to take a National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) Instructors Course to further enhance the experiential components of the TGS curriculum. We look forward to welcoming Charlie back to TGS in the Fall of 2016.

Searches for both positions are currently underway and information about the opportunities can be found here on our website. We anticipate that these highly coveted positions will be competitively sought after. If you know of qualified candidates, please refer them to the job descriptions on the website.

IMPORTANT! MAKE UP SKI DAY MARCH 4

We will have a make up Okemo and Grafton ski day on WEDNESDAY, March 4. We will follow the regular Tuesday ski day schedule.

VARIETY SHOW RESCHEDULED MARCH 6
More details to follow!

SELMA TONIGHT - A Showing of Selma at The Grammar School February 25 at 6pm in TGS Auditorium - Thanks to the generosity of a Grammar School parent, the TGS middle school is pleased to invite 6th, 7th, and 8th graders and their parents to an evening screening of the newly released Selma. We'll show the movie on Wednesday, February 25 at 6pm in the TGS auditorium. We will provide popcorn and seltzer, and you're welcome to bring your own snacks as well. This is not a curriculum requirement for anyone, but an opportunity to celebrate Black History Month together while furthering themes from our social studies curriculum.

Selma focuses on the time leading up to the march from Selma to Montgomery in 1965.

Although the Civil Rights Act of 1964 legally desegregated the South, discrimination was still rampant in certain areas, making it very difficult for blacks to register to vote. In 1965, an Alabama city became the battleground in the fight for suffrage. Despite violent opposition, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (David Oyelowo) and his followers pressed forward on an epic march from Selma to Montgomery, and their efforts culminated in President Lyndon Johnson signing the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Given the events of the time, the film contains some violence. Selma is rated PG-13. We suggest reading the reviews (from both parents and kids) at Common Sense Media to decide if Selma is right for your family. Since the film has a running time of 122 minutes, we won't discuss it that evening, but will do so in the days after our screening. We will explore themes from the film in our classrooms in such a way that all students can participate, whether or not they choose to attend the film.

Please contact Apple, Laurie, or Tara with any questions. We hope to see many of you on February 25. Please join us if you can.

GIRLS ON THE RUN

Girls on the Run starts in just a few weeks, and this year it would be great to add Girls on Track (for girls in grades 6-8) at TGS. But that means we need more coaches! Email Jen Robb to find out how you can help with these awesome programs. You don't need to be a strong runner!

TGS SWEATSHIRTS!

Email Mary to order your child's or your own TGS sweatshirt with bird logo on the front. Hooded or crewneck sweatshirts are $35 and a student's name on the back is an additional $5.

THANK YOU FROM THE LIBRARY

Thank you to everyone who contributed to the 55th Library Birthday Party. Once again, the entire school filled the library with enthusiasm for books and reading. Second graders entertained the school with a homonym game, fifth graders had the group calling out letters to find book titles, and sixth graders challenged us with a literary guessing game. Wonderful books given to the library were opened and announced by seventh graders.

In all we received over thirty books. The party ended with students offering their favorite book titles, authors, and series while waiting their turn to choose a cupcake. Parents and teachers provided an impressive number and variety of yummy cupcakes much to the delight of party goers.

Thank you all so much. Your support greatly increases our ability to provide quality literature for our children. If you would like to give a book to the library, an updated wish list can be found at

http://thegrammarschool.org/library/.

Second graders are collecting non-perishable food, diapers, toothpaste, toothbrushes, and other items necessary for health. The pantry is bare and the need is great. Please contribute! Baskets for donations are located outside the main office and the second grade room.

Thank you.
