GREETINGS FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL
This has been a fun end of the term, filled with celebration and excitement as we approach the holiday break. Last week students in Kathy's math classes participated in the Hour of Code, spending one hour in class in groups of two, learning the basics of computer coding. (See Kathy's comments below.) We've made a number of steps toward increasing opportunities for students at TGS to become more fluent with technology, from introductory coding to our new 3D printer, and we look forward to more mission appropriate developments in this area in the future.
It was wonderful to see so many of you last Wednesday as we celebrated with students in grades 5-8 at the holiday concert. We all are excited for this evening's performance for the younger students, as well.
Throughout the school, students are eagerly sharing notes and clues in anticipation of the Secret Santa celebration on Friday.
Your children will be bringing home our annual TGS calendar, which highlights student artwork from out GET theme. It is a lovely calendar and is an example of our integrated approach to multidisciplinary study, as students use varied mediums as they highlight their learning about South Africa. The calendar is beautiful, so please thank Hannah Richards for putting it together!
Happy Holidays,
Dan
HOUR OF CODE AT TGS
Over 110 Vermont schools participated in Hour of Code during Computer Science Education Week December 8-14. "The Hour of Code is a global movement reaching tens of millions of students in 180+ countries." Try it yourself. Go to http://hourofcode.com/us, press start, and pick a tutorial.
Upper School math teacher Kathy Richardson says, "35 students in 6th-8th grades at TGS participated in Hour of Code last Thursday and Friday. Other classes are hoping to try it after the break. All our students started with 'Code with Anna and Elsa' and then took off on a coding choice of their own. They were totally engaged and clamoring for more."
TGS SECRET SANTA
Our Secret Santa celebration is on Friday! Please deliver your Secret Santa gifts to the library tomorrow.
OPUS 29
Congratulations to Wells Mundell-Wood and Amelia Opsahl who were again selected to have their original musical composition included in a concert by professional musicians. Their piece, "Morning Melody", a trio for french horn, piano and snare drum, will be performed at the free Opus 29 Concert at the Elley-Long Music Center at St. Michael's College in Colchester, VT on Monday, January 12, 2015. The sixth grade class entered three compositions into the Opus 29 competition run by Music-COMP (formerly Vermont Midi Project). They were mentored by their music teacher, Alli Lubin as well as by a professional Vermont composer as part of the Music-COMP program. Four fifth graders will also travel with the composers in January to be guests for the day, attending a music workshop, rehearsals, dinner and the evening concert. The fifth grade will have the opportunity to participate in the Opus 30 competition in the spring.
